Democracy is the political expression of mob rule, in which the majority group can impose its will with impunity on minority groups.

Progressives - the people whose ideology is based on lifting up minorities above all others - are coincidentally also the ones who shout the loudest about "preserving our democracy". The cognitive dissonance from this is only possible to reconcile if you either lack the ability to think about it rationally, or you have no integrity to get in the way of your double-standard.

There are 350 million people in this country. What is your definition of "a lot?"

Meachamus_Prime,
@Meachamus_Prime@noauthority.social avatar

@wjmaggos @ryan @threalist

200 million is lots of people.

https://news.gallup.com/poll/266807/percentage-americans-owns-stock.aspx

https://www.statista.com/statistics/184902/homeownership-rate-in-the-us-since-2003/

Assuming 100% overlap in these 2 statistics, you have 227.5 million voters if you have nothing more than a stake requirement for voting rights. Assuming you maintain the requirement of age you will probably reduce that by a few million. Exactly what percentage of voters would be good enough for you?

Meachamus_Prime,
@Meachamus_Prime@noauthority.social avatar

@wjmaggos @ryan @threalist

So for you, a Chinese member of the Communist party who is not an American citizen, a Russian student who is not an American citizen, a North Korean diplomat, and an American Homeowner should all be able to vote in American elections.

"Democracy is 2 wolves and a sheep voting on what is for dinner. A republic is a well armed sheep contesting the vote."

This is why the founding fathers implemented proof of stake in voting.

Meachamus_Prime,
@Meachamus_Prime@noauthority.social avatar

@wjmaggos @ryan @threalist

The fact that someone is a here legally doesn't mean they have stake in America. Consider Chinese birth tourism.

Say all that again after you've been personally attacked by those wolves and your word will carry more weight. Unfortunately, at the moment you show an extreme lack of perspective in this discussion. That naivety is the attitude that led to places like the USSR, the CCP, and the current government in Venezuela.

Meachamus_Prime,
@Meachamus_Prime@noauthority.social avatar

@wjmaggos @ryan @threalist

Yes, I'm so greedy for wanting to be left alone and wanting only the people to have a vote in the United States who want the United States to prosper and who have a reason to want the United States and its citizens to prosper. So greedy of me.

Come back when you're interested in discussing this seriously. Without "It's current year!" like some slightly less racist, slightly less goal post teleporting, John Oliver.

Meachamus_Prime,
@Meachamus_Prime@noauthority.social avatar

@wjmaggos @osc3r @ryan @threalist

You weren't calling any specific person greedy, just every person who believes in a limited voter base, which just happens to include everyone here who disagrees with you. No big deal. Just par for the course when debating someone who doesn't like to back up their argument with facts.

Why does the electoral college exist?

Meachamus_Prime,
@Meachamus_Prime@noauthority.social avatar

@wjmaggos @SeaTree

Exactly. That is why that meme matters. Without the electoral college and the Senate, low population states gain no benefit to being part of the union, even more so in modern times since that's where the majority of the volunteer military has come from since Vietnam. What would the blue dots do without the food provided those lower population states? The blue dots need the electoral college more than the farmers do. The farmers don't really need them today.

Meachamus_Prime,
@Meachamus_Prime@noauthority.social avatar

@wjmaggos @SeaTree

That's not just my view. That's the founding fathers view, as you noted.

Meachamus_Prime,
@Meachamus_Prime@noauthority.social avatar

@wjmaggos @SeaTree

No. I'm looking at it as though states have different policy concerns. Period. If they have different policy concerns and are outnumbered, they have no reason to remain in a straight Democracy. That is why the founding fathers included the Senate and Electoral College, not to get them to sign it. It was to preserve a republic at the expense of a democracy, because all previous democracies had failed for exactly that reason.

Meachamus_Prime,
@Meachamus_Prime@noauthority.social avatar

@wjmaggos @SeaTree

It is interesting that the losers in a republic always cry fowl at the lack of majority rule when it suits them, but praise it when it saves them.

Meachamus_Prime,
@Meachamus_Prime@noauthority.social avatar

@wjmaggos @SeaTree

Unfortunately, those laws are more often enforced against enemies of those in power in totalitarian regimes rather than enforced equally to encourage actual incentives. When no one knows if a law will be enforced, or everyone knows that it will only be enforced against one group, there is no incentive.

Meachamus_Prime,
@Meachamus_Prime@noauthority.social avatar

@wjmaggos @SeaTree

Furthermore, the government is not in the incentive business. Government is there to protect life, rights, and the pursuit of happiness. If it incentivizes anything other than those, it has overstepped it's bounds, and our founding document has much to say about the required response.

Meachamus_Prime,
@Meachamus_Prime@noauthority.social avatar

@wjmaggos @SeaTree

And you have a shallow understanding of life. The government is not there to save society from the individual. We can survive without government. We have been for either millennia or millions of years, depending on your theory. Dependence on government makes one weak. And if you believe in survival of the fittest, A.K.A. evolution, then your own philosophies contradict a weak existence and indicate it's only a matter of time until you pull us all down with you.

It's excess deaths. If it has leveled out that is bad.

Meachamus_Prime,
@Meachamus_Prime@noauthority.social avatar

@wjmaggos @rw @s3ksh0n8

Exactly. It should have dipped way below it. It's excess deaths compared to the previous year. We never recovered.

Meachamus_Prime,
@Meachamus_Prime@noauthority.social avatar

@wjmaggos @rw @s3ksh0n8

Yes. The expected deaths line is supposed to be the previous year's reported deaths line. This is the science.

Meachamus_Prime,
@Meachamus_Prime@noauthority.social avatar

@wjmaggos @rw @s3ksh0n8

I've been looking for easy to understand graphs to explain the science to you. The attached only goes from 2017 to 2020, but the explanation is embedded in the image.

If you can't understand the science from this picture, then you need to ask yourself if you truly have .

Meachamus_Prime,
@Meachamus_Prime@noauthority.social avatar

@wjmaggos @rw @s3ksh0n8

Again proving my point. If the way you are interpreting the data was correct, and the vaccines were as successful as you suggest, you would see a blue line below the brown in 2022. That graph means deaths were even higher in 2021 than 2020, still higher in 2022 than 2021, and finally stopped increasing by 2023. When the recovery starts you will either see a significantly higher brown line for a short period, or a moderately higher brown for a long period.
