A year ago, tonight, a girl who’d never seen her own reflection was sitting with her Eldest child for bedtime. And after Eldest fell asleep, she came across a post suggesting that wishing that she was the other gender was not a very cis thing to do.

It only took a few days to conclude that she wanted to transition so she could show her children what it meant to live authentically. She didn’t want her example to them to be living in the closet.

Anyway. It’s been quite a year.

I order some Products from the United States.

The cost is $88 CAD.

There's a fixed international shipping cost of $48 CAD. Frustrating, but that is what the shipper has, so okay.

A couple days later, I get an email from UPS asking to pay the import duty fee. The import fee is $51 CAD.

That is more than half the cost of the product itself. I'm overall paying more for shipping+import fees than for the product.

When I moved here I assumed I could buy stuff from USA cheap because of NAFTA :(

@mcc UPS broker fees and that whole process is RIDICULOUS.

I tend to avoid companies that ship to Canada with UPS. FedEx and DHL have been far more reasonable in my personal experience.

And idk if you live near the border at all, but paying for a US postal box has saved me a lot of money. $90/yr and they will sign for packages (so it's not a PO box). I go over and pick them up and just pay duty at the crossing.

Y'all, I'm SO fucking excited

I just signed up for a 6 weeks Beginner Inclusive Yoga Class :ablobcatheartsqueeze:

Long long time ago I dabbled in yoga. I have wanted to get back into some kind of slow, intentional, movement.

Been following this teacher from the UK for a while who has a body like mine. She's ADAMANT about being inclusive in her sessions and teaching.

As I get older, I realize I need more movement in my life, to care for this body of mine.

@amanda It's on zoom, so perfect for my still covid-cautious self.

If the class goes well she offers regular biweekly yoga classes via zoom plus something she calls a restful practice on the weekends.

I am SO stoked about beginning a yoga practice. Totally splurged on a mat that is good for plus sized bodies, wanna give myself all the tools to enjoy it.

@Willow @amanda Absolutely splurged on a Manduka long and wide that is 6mm thick. I have tried yoga before and I hate feeling so squished on a standard width mat.

Something I've learned (which does suck for fat bodies cuz fat tax) is sometimes you gotta splurge and get the tools so that I can really engage and enjoy. This is something I really want to invest in.

@amanda Yeah idk why it hadn't occurred to me either until I saw the advert for her class. I think having like, the scheduled meeting time will help keep me more accountable than signing up for videos or something that I can do whenever (aka never)

File under "Spectacular AI fails!" So I just got my monthly witch box from @InkedGoddessCreations and one of the items was "vampire's blood" incense and the card that came with the box said to read the box for more information. So since I had the OCR app out to read the card, I used it on the box, this is the picture I took and you can read the alt text to see what it thinks is inside. I laughed so hard! Please repost this for the idiots in the back who think "self driving cars" are a good idea!

Slept 4.5 hours last night. Get Younger Kidlet on the bus, clean up the morning breakfast stuff, settle to fall back to sleep... just about to drift off & the phone rings. The school doesn't want him because the doctor's note we gave them stated that he is to be excused yesterday and today. I just picked him up & now husband is annoyed with the school but I get the brunt of it.

I'm so fucking tired and drained. I've been running on fumes for weeks now & I'm done with it all.

Welp, no mushrooms with dinner... the packet I got delivered today expired two weeks ago. (This is the third time in as many weeks I've had a well-expired item in my grocery delivery. I called head office and told them if it happens again, I'm going somewhere else).

The smoke detector went off 5 times in the 10 min the salmon was in the air fryer.

All in all, not the relaxing experience I'd hoped that cooking in my new place would be.

But the food was good!

@consumablejoy I've always enjoyed Japanese food, but a few years ago I was Dxed with a serious dairy allergy. It was... A Bad Time™. It's a lot of mental gymnastics to change recipes. I turned to Japanese cuisine because it traditionally doesn't have dairy.

Around the same time it was early pandemic and I was really depressed. So I basically hyper-focused on Japanese ichiju-sansai style meals.

I found the Just One Cookbook blog and went to town! I've actually been featured on their IG!

@consumablejoy Yeah, my love of Asian food in general has been a blessing. I've also found the ichiju sansai style in general (literally: one soup, three dishes) has been a great way to include a nice variety of meats and veg.

My goal is to learn enough Japanese to travel there one day and take a cooking class w/o needing a translator.

@Archergal @consumablejoy It's surprisingly simple! A lot of things can be made ahead of time which I really like. The JOC blog is awesome, and she often includes western substitutions for harder to find Japanese ingredients.

@consumablejoy Yeah, I know modern Japanese food has cheese. But the traditional recipes don't, like almost at all.

The Ichiju sansai style emphasises just presenting the protein or veg in a simple but delicious way. Not overly complicated cooking stuff. Like, grilled, or blanched, or simmered, etc. It works well for me.

@consumablejoy Maybe. It'll be a long time before I'm able to travel to Asia anyways. Between covid and my elderly dog. So I've kind of set it as a "one day" daydream vs a specific goal.
