I wonder what happens if I click "Submit Payment" on this form

@esdin "On May 9, 2024, 'Money' ended after a woman in Toronto, Ontario accidentally caused the economy to divide by zero. Invented in 700 BC, 'Money' had previously been popular in both the U.S. and Canada."

@teixi This was the regular site, but it got into this broke state when I left a form open for a couple hours then progressed to the next pane.

In my opinion, this is not a very good error message.

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@onelson You will be unsurprised to learn that selecting "Build" -> "Make Project" from the menu caused the error to go away.

By the way, here is a thread I made last night about some interesting projects toward replacing "enshittified" products and systems with better, more open ones. Reposting cuz it was kind of the middle of the night in Europe https://mastodon.social/@mcc/112407897068101741

I order some Products from the United States.

The cost is $88 CAD.

There's a fixed international shipping cost of $48 CAD. Frustrating, but that is what the shipper has, so okay.

A couple days later, I get an email from UPS asking to pay the import duty fee. The import fee is $51 CAD.

That is more than half the cost of the product itself. I'm overall paying more for shipping+import fees than for the product.

When I moved here I assumed I could buy stuff from USA cheap because of NAFTA :(

I have failed utterly

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@kimhoar Yeah, unfortunately this particular vendor did not give me an option of how to ship.

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@chrisjrn I actually did purchase a mailbox in Buffalo with the intent of occasionally driving there to get packages but it turned out to be just a little too inconvenient for this limited purpose.

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@mnemonicoverload Yeah, I wasn't asked what carrier I wanted to use :(

Hard to imagine a signal that a website is a rugpull more intense than banning users for trying to delete their own posts

https://www.tomshardware.com/tech-industry/artificial-intelligence/stack-overflow-bans-users-en-masse-for-rebelling-against-openai-partnership-users-banned-for-deleting-answers-to-prevent-them-being-used-to-train-chatgpt

Like just incredible "burning the future to power the present" energy here

@MylesRyden I assume they are expecting exactly this will happen regardless of whether or not they partner with OpenAI, and partnering with OpenAI is a way for them to recoup some of the money from this new paradigm. In other words, this is an "exit". Never mind whether they could have made SOME money by continuing to run their old business rather than setting it on fire, never mind these actions will damage the flow of new content to feed to OpenAI.

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@MylesRyden The long term is irrelevant, the goal is probably for C-suite executives to do whatever increases revenue for one quarter and then leave the company with a large severance package as reward for having increased revenue for one quarter

mcc,

@bjoernstaerk Lo siento, no comprendo

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@halley From talking to other people in this thread it appears they are quite sensitive to any edits resembling a protest at all, and there does appear to be a human review component.

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@slembcke I wonder what happens if you edit one post per 24 hours.

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@chkuendig lol in some ways this might actually be more asinine

(i suspect the difference may be about different sections of SO rather than a change over time, however)

If the reason The Times covers Biden with a scalpel and Trump with a feather duster were because Biden won’t do an interview, that would be nice. The truth is they also try this. Gore, Clinton, now Biden. And it’s because they sincerely think their job to make every election look like a coin flip.

@lolgop How is the New York Times supposed to serve their vital purpose of writing award-winning exposes of Donald Trump's corruption if Donald Trump doesn't actually win the election?

For the last two years I've been semi-daily posting "What I'm Listening to Today" links here. Mastodon has some problems with threads containing hundreds of posts, so I re-create the thread once a year.

If you'd like to see, here's my "year two" thread: https://mastodon.social/@mcc/110266770603341546

Or, alternately, every song from year two in the least practical format possible: A 301-song, 38-hour YouTube playlist (note: video #1 contains flashing):

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLLIjft6ja7DM_kacOW8zo2vtr-aWpTNX6

And here's the thread for "year three":

What I'm listening to today: "So close", Floppi

This is a soft, seductive DOS tracker track. It appears to use one single sample, so it's basically like a 2 minute electric piano solo, if the electric piano had infinite sustain. Sometimes with tracker tunes I can find a little history, but all I find googling is a forum post claiming the track was first released in 1997; and that the author is Finnish, and died in 2022.

Scenestream tags: "Calm keygen" "Sad sinewave"

This post is written in code. It is designed so that it will only be understood by the people I want to be able to understand it.

In addition to the letter E, I am now making use of the letter P. This is my third time attempting to use P, and I hope that this one actually takes. I am starting with one hundred so I expect I initially won't be able to tell the difference at all.

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

Update: I am now going to attempt… TWO HUNDRED

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

(Two hundred is the regular number to attempt.)
