Pantherina, (edited )

Even organizations that don’t sponsor any work through Igalia welcome its contributions.

The hell is that supposed to mean?

Very cool company, they work on Wayland, the Orca screenreader, Vulkan, the Linux Kernel, and even alternative mobile OSses.

Their website (you might as well read their own words instead of some Microsoft people talking about what they do)

Pantherina,

Dude sorry to say but roleplay is not equally important as medicine or coding XD

Pantherina,

Not wanting to be mean, I just find the thought of people talking to robots a bit strange, and use them as tools only. Not sure what “roleplay” means, if it is some “fantasy DND generator” still you could say this may be better done by humans to keep that grey matter running.

Pantherina,

Nobara is a half baked not well maintained and very hacky fork of Fedora.

It is substantially less secure, even though you might squeeze out some performance percents using their hardware optimizations.

This may not be worse as it fits the purpose, would still kinda advise against.

Pantherina,

I would recommend ublue bazzite or secureblue (nvidia userns kinoite). Never used VNC on wayland as clients that dont need static IPs suck or have no wayland support. KDE has software for that.

Bazzite would be the easy solution as it is a very well curated image (with lots of variants) for gaming.

Secureblue is not for gaming, so you will need Flatpak for Steam, Bottles, Lutris and PupGui or whatever you use. Or you layer everything, which will slow down updates but as a server its not that bad. But secureblue is a “proof of concept” of a secure Fedora. You might encounter new bugs as its currently not meant for gaming, and this will be helpful to improve radical security trends for Fedora (secureblue does lots of things Fedora doesnt, as it is a clear secure distro, not “it works kinda and always”).

Ublue (and all derivates like bazzite or secureblue) has the drivers preinstalled and if the addition breaks something you will likely just not get an update, rather than have a broken local system.

Please report your findings!

Pantherina,
  • very slow and seemingly manual updates, unlike the CI/CD of ublue
  • replaced SELinux with Apparmor, not sure about the used profiles but just assume that this “at most few person” project is less secure
  • bundling in a ton of fixes that may break

It is a cool project as a proof of concept, but extremely hacky with drawbacks

Pantherina,

Tbh GrapheneOS.

Android is Linux.

And unlike desktop Linux it was able to spread secure and private standards

  • every app is sandboxed, not some opt-in like Flatpak
  • apps start with no permissions (or at least very little), everything is opt-in
  • it is like 99% unbreaking, immutable, it just always works while my desktop Linux broke all the time
  • there is a webview, which can be hardened. Not Electron, which is insecure and bloated
  • energy saving etc work like a charm. 1% battery loss over an entire night!
  • hardware security with trusted element is decades ahead of desktop Linux (Ubuntu is just now getting TPM encryption support)
  • it is a unified platform, with tons of apps, many of them essential (as the platform is so secure), like 2FA, Banking, public services etc. you can have a full FOSS phone though

I am sure excited for other operating systems but they are just toys. GrapheneOS does amazing work that is a 100% alternative today, for real phones with normal prices, good performance and outstanding security.

Pantherina,

Look at startingpoint, I would be down to join effords but tbh I dont have a phone until some kernel gets patched to work on a Pixel 4a (or until I repair a “community supported” oneplus I found)

Pantherina,

KDE and Wayland works perfectly, at least if you are on 5.27 or even Plasma 6 beta.

Pantherina,

What version does Debian ship? 5.27 LTS works great on Fedora

Pantherina,

I dont get how that works, you mail those lines with all those

<span style="color:#323232;">+line
</span><span style="color:#323232;">+something
</span><span style="color:#323232;">-something
</span>

And they can like transform that into git and have it work as an actual patch?

Pantherina,

TIL about Gemini (btw not the Google thing and not the bitcoin thing…)

Pantherina,

LSD haha, its insane and awesome, so many people should experience it before thinking they know themselves.

Affordable Android Excellence: Best Smartphones Under $200 in 2024 (www.gizchina.com)

While flagship smartphones boast impressive features, spending $1,000 is not a prerequisite for a satisfying Android experience nowadays. If you’re in need of a new smartphone and have a budget of approximately $200, there are numerous excellent options available. Surprisingly, some of the best Android phones under $200 come...

Pantherina,

No, they get minimal security patches for nearly a year.

Thats not much but its harm reduction as they cannot

  • update any part of the firmware
  • maintain an old kernel
  • port it to a newer kernel

DivestOS is recommendes AFTER the device is EOL.
