If you could watch an individual water molecule, about once in 10 hours you'd see it do this!

As it bounces around, every so often it hits another water molecule hard enough enough for one to steal a hydrogen nucleus - that is, a proton - from the other!

The water molecule with the missing proton is called a hydroxide ion, OH⁻. The one with an extra proton is called a hydronium ion, H₃O⁺.

This process is called the 'autoionization' of water. Thanks to this, roughly one in ten million molecules in a glass of water are actually OH⁻ or H₃O⁺, not the H₂O you expect.

And this gives a cool way for protons to move through water. Let's watch it!

Fascinating thread ... have been delving back to memories of vague teenage chemistry lessons :)

In a way, having a family tree on Ancestry after the DNA test is rather like a large room with individuals doing jigsaw puzzles.

The Thrulines algorithm is like a visitor wandering around the tables borrowing pieces to see if they fit in someone else's jigsaw.

Sometimes it borrows nice joined up sections of jigsaw that are a beauty to behold.

Sometimes it's like it spent lunchtime in the pub before picking bits off the floor.

Why do ancestors' relatives insist on marrying people with names that are wildcard heaven?

Cott?r?ll
Sid??way
Clif*
Pi?k?r?l* Pickerell/hill is a right one!!

What seem at first sight to be those rare joyous easily tracked surnames so quickly draw blood.

Really disturbed night with this stupid cold.

Bed well before 10.

Hot chocolate around midnight.

Cereal from 4.30 to now.

Noisy, yucky.

On the other side my granny's grandad served 33 years as a warder at Birmingham jail. Started there just after it opened around 1850 and latterly lived in one of the decorative "round houses" attached to the outside of the jail that added to it's appearance as being some kind of mock Tudor castle.

Granny was born there. Effectively "in" the walls of the jail. NOT "in" the jail!!

Call me cynical.

I understand the overwhelming sense of sadness at what appears mindless vandalism towards a tree.

Just seems so helpful to a government with an utterly abysmal record on environmental matters to have a loss of habitat issue in the news when it cancels HS2.

This is how the Brexit vote was won ... "Are you interested in X,Y or Z? All will be better if we leave the EU".

Caught just enough voters by lying to each separately.

There is snake oil floating on the waters here.

Am obsessing about "two people never seen in the same room together". Daughter Pamela is there on 1841 census, not in 1851, marries in 1853 as surname Brookes father Hughes. No marriage to "Mr Brookes" yet found.
A girl is born in 1848, mother Ann Brookes, registered b Lichfield St no father - the bap has mother living Berry St. 1851 census mom lodges Berry St unm & the child is with GPs the Hughes's. "Ann Brookes" is neither born nor dies.
The baby grows, marries and emigrates.

So Twitter/X's algorithm is throttling back notifications of replies by mutual followers.

Only by scrolling the timeline do you get to see replies by friends in some cases.

Feature to get you to scroll the ads. Not a bug.

Presumably to up the number of Ad "views" for revenue purposes.

Well, a post for

My sis and I had a little early evening trip to the pub. Beautiful cup of coffee each. Nothing else.

Profoundly unwise.

Will be grumpy today.

Rarely drink coffee after lunchtime. Americano at 7.30pm was utter madness.

Went to pics to see The Escaper this afternoon.

The Glenda Jackson and Michael Caine film doing the rounds.

Pressed exactly the right buttons, not sugar-and-water. Just a lovely lovely film.

Each of the other characters fitted the film so perfectly.

Am resolved to try to research the of a man-friend of my mom who was killed in a landing craft on the Normandy beaches. She spoke of him once or twice. Am struggling to remember his name even.

Don't know where to start.

Five and a half years ago I posted this on Twitter.

Be under no illusion ... Rishi Sunak slipping out of the D Day memorial early will attract real anger from his own people.

(In my case Corbyn apparatchik Aaron Bastani had taken a pop at the British Legion a day or so before ... our stall was on Pershore High Street only a few yards from the British Legion stall. Just too embarrassing for words.)

I'll repeat for any who missed this morning ... the term D Day Dodger doesn't mean what you might think it means.

Rishi Sunak is definitely not one fit to be called a D Day Dodger.

The D Day Dodgers song. Justifiably sweary.

Rishi Sunak was just plain rude last week. And deliberately so.

Sunak shouldn't be called a D Day Dodger ... He hasn't earned it.
