Feels like everyone in knows I've got the decorator in the house.

Just had friendly conversation in the café with a couple who hitherto we'd only exchanged smiles.

First Q: "How's the decorator getting on?"

It started a few weeks ago when I shared it in the street with someone who occasionally joins the coffee table after which it's become the opening line with more folk than I thought I knew.

(Am somewhat flattered, in truth.)

Random theory that occurred to me yesterday: poetry must be a rather recent and accidental invention compared to singing.

A poem is a song without melody. I bet that, before the invention of writing, there were no poems, only songs. But when writing was invented, and people tried to write down songs, they of course could not write down the melody. Only the lyrics, rhyme, and some of the rhythm could get through. Voilà, poetry...

I am inclined to agree.

Knots predate mankind ... the wind ties knots.

Music in the form of resonances predate mankind ... the wind makes tones.

Communication ... ?

Shows how long it's been since I went into a multistorey department store.

Went to Worcester with sis today. Used the escalator to go up two floors. At the end of the first I got confused. In my day you'd do a 180 and go up again. But here they make you walk back past products to get to the next up escalator.

Same coming back down.

Idiots.

No wonder The House of Fraser chain is going bust.

Before you give too much credit to Dan Poulter (MP & doctor) for abandoning the Tories to join Labour, don't forget he's been an MP for 14 years & been working as a doctor all that time.... so one might have expected him to notice the Tory engineered crisis in the NHS quite some time before now.

No, he's defecting because he can see the Tory electoral meltdown coming & wants to preserve his happy position of having two well-paying jobs.

And, obvs, old address books ... one of my Arizonan 2c's had her nana's address book from her arrival through Ellis Island around 1913.

It had names and addresses of her two siblings shipped out to Canada by John Middlemore Homes to work on farms. And of their families.

Don't update/filter the hand written address books too much!!

Perhaps for obvious reasons, as family historian, families are reluctant to have funeral / wake photographs. However I have found it can sometimes work (sensitively) and everyone seems happy to participate. Anyone else been there? @genchat

Not so much photographs at my folks' funerals but the attendance cards (charity donation envelopes didn't come back iirc). And condolence letters/cards.

My first into to the FAN club was the video by Connie Knox which started by showing how to select copy and paste from the (US) census.

Then got to the meat sifting through eliminating those unlikely to be relevant leaving the remainder as possible fathers of her ancestor.

Which remained unresolved but she was able to pin down the grandparents.

That was the big lesson for me ... that one doesn't necessarily discover the actual parent(s) but you might prove the grandparents :)

Although there is human tragedy behind the data, there is a certain poetic justice to the fact that waiting times for NHS treatment, which have lengthened & become more frequent across the country, are actually worst in more Tory held constituencies than in Labour held seats.

Voters currently prioritise the economy & health: whatever they tell their supporters in the press, the Tories don't have a convincing case for success in either, as people are actually experiencing!

RobertJackson58585858,
@RobertJackson58585858@masto.ai avatar

@ChrisMayLA6

I see this in my area of S Worcs and N Glos. Projects that are unpopular locally happen despite local Tory "hand wringing" opposition because there is no political will. The Tories have overwhelming majorities locally that will never be challenged at the ballot box.
