Episode Discussion | Star Trek: Discovery | 5x10 "Life, Itself"

LoglineSeries Finale. Trapped inside a mysterious alien portal that defies familiar rules of time, space, and gravity, Captain Burnham must fight Moll – and the environment itself – in order to locate the Progenitors’ technology and secure it for the Federation. Meanwhile, Book puts himself in harm’s way to help Burnham...

This was … a DISCO episode.

Lengthy but meaningless action sequences? Check. Shaky cams all the damn time? Check. People talking about their feelings at the worst possible moment? Check. No apparent command structure and people just doing whatever they want? Check. One-dimensional villains? Check. Flamethrowers on the bridge? Check. (although, to be honest, those are so absurd that I’ll actually miss them)

I liked the future scenes because they were noticably slower and cerebral than pretty much anything that Discovery did during its five seasons. I wish they would have done something like that more often.

But yeah, that’s it. I’m somewhat glad it’s over. I liked the first two seasons of the show. Despite their flaws I appreciated that they’ve tried something new in the Star Trek franchise. And ultimately that led to Strange New Worlds, so I’ll have to give them credit for that. Anything after the season 3 time jump was not my cup of tea though. There was never enough worldbuilding for my taste because so much screentime was devoted to Burnham and Book, and that meant that the 31st century never really felt “real” to me.

Maybe I’ll rewatch seasons 1 and 2 somewhere down the line but I have no interest in watching seasons 3-5 again. I’ll just treat them as Burnham’s fever dream or something like that.

I liked the dramatic green flag waving at the start. 😄 IIRC they always do it like this at Suzuka.

The cars are still slower than the v10 era

I never understood that sole focus on top speed.

The wheel to wheel racing is better than in the V10 era, and that’s what the regulations intend to do. What’s the point of being fast in a straight line when the actual racing is shit? As a spectator you don’t notice the difference between 355 and 365 kph anyway.

What does a member of this species think about themselves when they look into a mirror? Do they all hate themselves?

I’m not really sure if I can convey my thought process in English but I’ll try.

The cars still all have to travel back to the pit lane

That is true. However you could see that some cars struggled to clear the stationed Mercedes and had to take to the grass. There was a bunch of debris on either side of the Mercedes.

After a red flag the other drivers could take their time to find the safest way around the Mercedes, or if necessary stop the car entirely. That’s not really possible during a VSC because the race is technically still going on. Or to put it another way: during a VSC the drivers only slow down as much as they have to. But they don’t want to slow more than necessary. Let’s say the driver in front of you has a time penalty that will be applied after the race. During a VSC you’ll scramble by the stopped car as fast as possible to not lose more time. It’s potentially unsafe.

They should do a video call instead of flying there for meetings all the time. Much more efficient and cheaper.

Canon Connections: 2x07 - Those Old Scientists

• In the episode “No Small Parts” Ransom explains to Captain Freeman that he calls the 2260s the ”TOS Era” in honour of ”Those Old Scientists” like Spock and and Scotty. Of course, this episode takes place in 2259, so clearly it’s time for a shake-up among the SNW production team....

Worf suffered discommendation and was stripped of his honour in “Sins of the Father”.

By the time Boimler is around Worf had gotten his honour back…and lost it again, and got it back… I think. It’s hard to keep track. But his family honor was restored in "Redemption’ for helping Gowron in the civil war.

I wonder if the VFX department didn’t get the memo.

It could also be an early script draft and during production they decided not to spend time and money on changing the ship model. Not everything you see in a script will end up on the screen.

Isn’t that illegal in the EU?

It is. But the UK chose to leave the EU, and this is one of the many “perks” they now have.

This will either be really fun or total nonsense. I like that they’re trying new things instead of only recycling old Trek tropes with aliens that have a different kind of bump on the forehead.

Apropos Bibliothekskarte:

Maybe it’s finally time for Star Trek to boldly go … for polyamory.

Canon Connections: Strange New Worlds 2x04 - Among the Lotus Eaters

• The title refers to the Homer’s “Odyssey” when Odysseus’ voyage reached the land of the Lotus-eaters. These people’s primary food source was the fruit and flowers of the lotus, which was powerfully narcotic, and caused those of Homer’s crew who ate it to forget their desire to return home....

The files specifies, “Lieutenant Ortegas is a 23rd century Federation Starfleet officer.” Presumably it’s necessary for the files to have information about the century in which an officer serves due to all the time travel.

Ha, this is great. 😄 I wonder if they just copied her Memory Alpha article?

I remember an interview with Garrett Wang who talked about a conversation with Rick Berman where he asked him whether Kim would ever be promoted to Lieutenant. Berman pretty much shot him down, saying that someone has to be an ensign.

And I think that’s pretty much all the thought that went into it: have characters with a variety of ranks. Possibly to help the audience distinguish them better (“Join me in my ready room, [Rank]”). Although admittedly that didn’t work in the second half of TNG when pretty much everyone (except Worf) was addressed as “Commander” because by season 3(?) everyone was at least a Lieutenant Commander.

With Sisko I think they wanted to distinguish him from the other two Captains Kirk and Picard, and since he commanded “only” a space station that was an in-universe excuse to make Sisko a commander.

Which is a pity because the ideas of having “circles” was actually clever. Or at least I thought so back then. I wonder how modern social media would look like if they all implemented that.

I’m a bit undecided about this episode.

Stuff that I liked:

  • a strange new(-ish) world
  • everyone got something to do, unlike last week
  • once again some funny Spock moments
  • the visuals on this show are stunning once again. The planet looked nice, the external VFX in the debris field of two celestial bodies that orbited Rigel VII several centuries ago looked nice, the Enterprise interiors look so nice.

Stuff that I didn’t like:

  • I’m not a fan of forced relationship dramas. Plus, from the pilot episode I got the feeling that Pike and Batel (does she even have a first name yet?) are only friends with benefits, but now Batel storms off after Pike says he wants to take it easy? Weird.
  • how can a society or any sort of structure be maintained if you can’t remember anything? The whole premise felt a bit off.
  • the writing for Ortegas was weak. Her personal log at the beginning of the episode sounded like it was written by ChatGPT. And the stuff towards the end of the episode wasn’t great either. The actor did the best she could with what she was given but the writing really didn’t do her any favors.

“This is a cage.” Heh.

I hope that one day Captain Pike visits a zoo and says “this is a menagerie”.
