I'm a just a small town AAA graphics programmer in Chicago. I worked on Gears 5 and Gears Tactics. My work is secret, but my personal projects are not.

I like to post about my personal research, various side projects, and I like to think out loud a lot. Expect weird humor, esoteric ramblings, and occasionally also art I made out of math. I like implicit surface modeling the normal amount. Amateur spoonie. 🏳️‍⚧️

There are numerous groups that use Slack to discuss corporate confidential information, sure, and I don't care about those at all, but there are also groups that have used Slack like a whisper network and I care a hell of a lot more about that data getting hoovered.

Should they have used Slack is really not an important question at this point. Should Slack suddenly decide that everyone's information is for sale? Your company should be immediately shut down or your CEO fired for even suggesting it.

Who do you think would win in a fight. Moss or Tunic

@mcc obviously Quill would win. I watched Mym play a bit of Tunic and it seemed like Tunic died a lot more easily, and I remember her complaining a lot about "dark souls mechanics". I like to think that excessive difficulty in a game is meant to be diegetic eg the Tunic character is just not a fighter and would rather have nothing to do with all of this fighting business. Quill on the other hand? Quill was born to kill.

I bought Ghost of Tsushima* on the PS4 and played for maybe 3 hours before I became distracted with Persona 5 Royale (and shortly after my PS4 was stolen) and I bought it full price and I just feel like that means I should get it free on Steam now that it's out.

*I kept wondering at the time of release, and now, that like... it's done by an American company, right? And it has Mongolian enemies. I'm like, how... am I supposed to feel about this? Yet it's published by a Japanese publisher. Is it a love letter to samurai films? Or a weird weeaboo moment?

@aud in general, it's kinda risky to make sweeping assumptions about the degree of diversity within a studio or game team or assume they did not hire people do provide sensitivity readings

@aud I'll take your word for it. I just feel uneasy about this kind of posting because confidently drilling down into a set of negative assumptions can easily snowball in bad ways you most likely don't intend.

@aud so I think what you probably meant was for the mile away optics of the game to be a springboard to ruminating on a complex topic that's likely been on your mind in a more general capacity, but it read more like the game and the studio behind it was being held up as an example of something that did something wrong that's being dissected directly, and the last post in the thread seems to reify it.

Can any console game devs give me some insight on the state of using Rust on consoles? My understanding is that Unreal has replaced some code with Rust, so it must be doable yes?

graphics research lifehack: you can cut out a ton of paywall scams and inscrutable academic wankery by excluding "we present" from your searches

Dang. I apparently came up with my hack for removing academic articles from google searches on the very last day it would work, because, uh, wow. I can't believe google finally took search out behind the barn.
