Giovanni Battista Draghi AKA Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (January 4, 1710 – March 16/17, 1736) was considered one of the important Italian Baroque era composers and multi-instrumentalists of his time. Unfortunately, he lived with chronic tuberculosis and died due to complications from it at age 36. He wrote “Stabat Mater” during the final weeks of his life. It became his most celebrated work- with major composers like Rousseau championing it following Pergolesi’s death.

I first heard Pergolesi’s “Stabat Mater” when I was 10 yrs old and I heard the chamber choir division of the professional children’s choir I was in rehearsing it. I don’t think I moved or even breathed the entire time they were going over sections of it. It felt like having my soul ripped out but in a good way??? I finally got to sing it myself as an alto/contralto when I was 13 and the first time I just had tears in my eyes the entire time.

Our soloists this week are Operatic Soprano Dominique Labelle🇨🇦 and Mezzo-Soprano Meg Bragle🇺🇸. Their pairing is unusual because traditionally Pergolesi’s “Stabat Mater” is written for Soprano and Alto/Contralto soloists.

Headphone listeners are in for a real treat because there are some really neat intricacies in “Stabat Mater” that defy description and instead have to be experienced

I keep expecting the piano to catch on fire tbh

Jacob van Eyck anyone know that composer? I guess I could have done some research BRB

analgesicsleep,
@analgesicsleep@mastodon.social avatar

@otheorange_tag @MatthewTitus88 all I know about Jacob van Eyck is that he was a blind Dutch nobleman, a composer and NOT related in any way to the painter Jan van Eyck
