FYI: I probably won't come on Mastodon much, if at all.

Where will I be? Other than CodePen (though most of my stuff there hasn't been public for over a year), there really isn't a place ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I'm just not a fan of any of the platforms of today.

Bluesky is missing all I care about.

Mastodon is just not a pleasant environment.

Twitter... still offers good tools to mostly keep the spammy, scammy, totally unhinged crap out of sight, out of mind, but stuff gets broken all the time.

Some people are moving to the bluesky, which checks notes

  • Is co-founded by Jack Dorsey
  • Was positive about blockchain at least in the beginning (and has a current CEO who worked on crypto before)
  • Only available via signing in (did it before twitter!)
  • Does not have RSS
  • Just one non-federated instance (but the protocol!11)
  • Weird approach to moderation (or non-moderation; that “hate-groups” slider)
  • Only available by invite (everyone, let's jump on a FOMO train)

Ah, understandable.

anatudor,

@kizu I don't know if your post was sponsored by Jack or Elon, but congratulations: it's a masterclass in how to drive people away from Mastodon.

anatudor,

@kizu Meh, sarcasm is one thing, self-righteousness is another. Thanks for reminding me why this place ain't worth paying for either. I can find better uses for the money, especially when I don't even make the minimum salary.

anatudor,

@kizu I'm not "aggravated", I'm just disappointed.

People here complain about twitter being a hostile environment, but posts like yours look more hostile to me than anything I've ever seen on twitter. You're basically talking shit about people without taking into account their choices may have reasons. Or if you take that into account, you're just dismissing those reasons without any second thought.

And that's extremely off-putting for me. I don't want to be in the same environment.

Can you change the email associated to a Mastodon account after you've created it? Asking for a friend. Thanks.

Sites like CSS Tricks or MDN are useful resources but don't expect to always find the definitive truth there. If you want to be sure, read the spec and do your own tests.
This also applies to research for articles and talks.

anatudor,

@matuzo If only the spec was written in English...

Here's me searching for a demo I posted recently...

This is the actual post if I scroll back in my profile https://mastodon.social/@anatudor/110535639760328467

anatudor,

@css Uh, oh, this is weird... it does find a bunch of my posts with CodePen links, but... not the one I was searching for.

In other news, I found public transport in Sofia to be much easier to navigate than in London and not only I don't understand any Bulgarian, but it's a different alphabet too. Can map some Cyrillic characters to transliterations to figure out place names, but it's still not easy.

anatudor,

@konstantin I already left yesterday afternoon, but public transport in Sofia was a smooth experience, in spite of my worries about the language barrier. I also happened to stay in a lovely part of the city (picked because it was close to the venue, but in retrospect, I don't think I could have made a better choice) - smelled very nice from the linden trees 🌳 and I got a bonus concert from the swallows nesting in the area. 🐦 🤭

anatudor,

@AmeliasBrain I saw almost the same package as in Athens, minus Heaven Shall Burn, at a much smaller festival in a park. On a much cooler day. In fact, my ears kinda froze on the way back to the hotel as I had no hoodie. Was fine at the show as it was all more animated, but then walking the streets while a cold wind was blowing...

“If you currently try to access Twitter without logging in to your user account, you may find you’re unable to see any of the content that was previously available to the wider public. Instead, you’ll likely be met with the Twitter window that asks you to either sign in to the platform or create a new account, effectively blocking you from viewing tweets and user profiles or browsing through threads unless you’re a registered Twitter user.“ — WELP.

anatudor,

https://twit.social/@a @developerjustin @bramus @tchambers Mastodon needs a search. That's why I've been linking to twitter. I crosspost, but I then I can't find anything anymore here. Search in order to link to it because it worked without being logged in was one of the best things about twitter. Now there isn't any alternative to this on the web.

anatudor,

https://twit.social/@a @developerjustin @bramus @tchambers Why would it be better with no search? I get that tech info gets deprecated at a fast pace and some tricks I was very proud to have come up with less than a decade ago I would never recommend today anymore... quite the opposite in fact. But I'm not even talking about that. Here I can't even find posts linking to demos I made half a year ago.

anatudor,

https://twit.social/@a @developerjustin @bramus @tchambers I'm someone who was physically assaulted on the street (and still has the physical damage from it) for being a rocker in a religious environment. I'm also a 45 kilo woman who lots of fucktards thought was okay to try to grope on the street. I still never got this point of view.

I personally learned to just deal with it and found my own ways of protecting myself from it. Twitter still offers better controls for it than Mastodon.

anatudor, (edited )

@sarajw https://twit.social/@a @developerjustin @tchambers @bramus How? I'm using the website (don't have a smartphone) and can't. If there's a way I'm missing, I'd like to know.

Cats in Greece: I was not disappointed. Let's say I returned to the hotel room to find a cute little intruder spying on me from the balcony. Thanks go to the room card failing to turn on the lights and making me open the curtains fully. Would have never noticed otherwise.

The universe thinks torturing Ana is fun.

Nothing went wrong... yet. Just a mix of things that look too good to be true and things that look worrying... but it's not like I can really afford more than take a deep breath and hope for the best. 😟

Also, properly rubbing sunscreen on your ears without pulling any hairs out of your bun is an art. Which I have not mastered.

So wish this vampire 🧛‍♀️ good luck as she's facing a very sunny day in Athens.

anatudor,

You know that thing where if you see someone's name trending, you check to see if that person has just died? Trending in Romania: Jesus Christ.

Interesting.

Flying to Greece tomorrow for a concert there on Wednesday and was looking for venue photos on Google Maps. Among the results...

anatudor,

@bundyo One of my biggest musical obsessions, Kreator, plus the band that really got me into death metal, plus a band I used to not care about much, but really enjoyed lately, Heaven Shall Burn. Not familiar with Bleed from Within, but the other three bands are more than worth it!

anatudor,

@bundyo I'm seeing that one too. It's on my way back and there's no such thing as saying no to a chance to see Kreator again.

anatudor,

@bundyo See? Everybody's got things they'd totally do and things they totally wouldn't do.

I know Brutal Assault, I have friends who regularly go, but it's not for me. I want to see all the bands and I want to be able to disappear into a big city after a show day..

anatudor,

@bundyo I feel extremely proud to have lasted through all 20+ bands over the course of three days at Rock Hard (one stage, well-connected to Essen) last year. But I don't think my body would have lasted another day.

anatudor,

@bundyo Thanks, but I had planned the trip fully almost two weeks in advance.

I'm sorry life got in the way of attending the festival.
