@Gmaclennan Have you thought ahout ditching hypercore oplogs for replicating at the sqlite storage layer? Merkalize the b tree and have sql as your primiyive and sync the source trees from other writers (still runs into paralell writers issue hut maybe merged can happen more efficiently that way too?

andrew_chou,

@mauve @Gmaclennan not sure how often Gregor checks in here so relayed this to him elsewhere :)

Very curious about this since I've had some amusing experiences with it:

How old do you think I am?

(Reply with an exact guess if you dare 😁)

andrew_chou,
@andrew_chou@toot.cafe avatar

pretty good! people tend to think that I'm much older than I actually am. guess this was more extreme when I was younger, but seems like my age has caught up to my demeanor 😁

p2p application frameworks have a sort of 'excalibur' quality to them (innumerable efforts, no successes), but i am nevertheless getting my hopes up again for https://socketsupply.co/

andrew_chou,
@andrew_chou@toot.cafe avatar

@tmcw the one thing that I'm hopeful for is the fact that they primarily focus on the discovery issue. p2p db stuff is already being well-explored by other projects but discovery has always been a tricky problem.

Don't care as much about the application framework stuff but it's a good direction for them to lean into

So, news today is that I'm closing down placemark.io https://macwright.com/2023/11/13/placemark

It's okay! It was a hard decision but I made it a while ago and have (mostly) processed the feels.

andrew_chou,
@andrew_chou@toot.cafe avatar

@tmcw looking forward to checking out the source! Much congrats on your efforts :)

reading this highlights the more interesting value of custom elements for me. I don't know much about all of the shadow stuff but this makes me feel better about that lack of knowledge.

truly mind-blowing stuff 🤯

https://justine.lol/cosmo3/

#cosmopolitan #redbean

andrew_chou,
@andrew_chou@toot.cafe avatar

@tty @todrobbins yep what Kira said! I'm working on a project that uses redbean (their portable webserver implementation) and I'm able to work on it on my MacBook, stick the executable on a thumb drive, and then run it on a Linux laptop! (while still in the thumbrive, if you so choose)

usually you would have to make sure that your system has the tools the program needs and ensure that they're built for the system before you could run the program. cosmopolitan sidesteps all of that!

andrew_chou,
@andrew_chou@toot.cafe avatar

@p2panda honestly that's probably much better given that I've had no involvement with that project specifically - I only know what I've been told 😄

andrew_chou, to javascript
@andrew_chou@toot.cafe avatar

know it's not a fair comparison, but relative to JavaScript, I thoroughly appreciate that Lua moves slowly as a language. Severely reduces maintenance burden and it's more conducive to longer-applicable content (especially important in the context of learning).

The philosophy is probably best summarized by Roberto's talk, How Much Does It Cost

https://youtu.be/gXdS3IftP0Y

andrew_chou,
@andrew_chou@toot.cafe avatar

obligatory reference to post by @soapdog:

https://andregarzia.com/2021/01/lua-a-misunderstood-language.html

especially this line:

> ...how it unlocks agency in the developer by letting them adapt the language to suit their environment and not vice versa.

easier to maintain code that is shaped by the way you think and the environment you work in

andrew_chou,
@andrew_chou@toot.cafe avatar

another good snippet from said post:

> Lua offers mechanisms, not policies. You use these mechanisms to build what suits you. You’re not tied to what PUC or a library author offers you.

anyone have any creative ways of improving their handwriting in their post-education years?

more frequent physical writing is probably sufficient for avoiding regression (I've definitely regressed 🙃), but interested in methods for actual improvement
