Mind-blowing just how much money's been wasted on the Tories' latest attempt to import US-style gerrymandering. I wonder if it's more or less than Rwanda.

Today is the day that I learnt that the barcodes on UK stamps, which obsoleted and made worthless everyone's stash of old stamps at the back of the cupboard, have no actual functional value. They're just for arbitrary links to something 'entertaining', like a video of Shaun the Sheep.

So this (triple bridge as tech debt) is not too far from us in Wales, I often take visitors there. It's locally known as "Devil's Bridge" or Pontarfynach.

"Now that DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH stopped working on macOS systems with SIP enabled" 🤯

No wonder it was silently failing. Is there anyone doing development work with Macs these days that doesn't have to just blanket disable SIP?

So, I don't really understand the point of Google search any more.

I just checked back in with it for a search query, for the first time in forever, as I wasn't turning up much with the alternatives I use. (Due to the web slowly collapsing under its own weight, sigh.) The first two pages were solid "sponsored" links trying to sell me something, often from stores that demonstrably have nothing to do with the term, and large pictures of the same thing.

Why bother? The PSNR is terrible.

That my #1 most desired browser feature is search-for-tab probably indicates I have a problem.

I'm just so. Bloody. Tired. Of the failed UK train "system".

The last thing the world needs is another Google product deprecation story, but, they will keep doing it 😛

  • Website created back in the day using Sites (sigh)
  • Google decides to replace it with some new hotness that (all together now) isn't backwards compatible
  • A week or so ago they removed the old site, so my domain served a blank page
  • I tried to publish the mangled "upgraded" version of the site, so at least there's something to see, and now... my domain redirects to itself 🤦‍♂️

It's depressing to realise that Amazon Prime's new ads regime isn't about making money off of ads. (They're all for other Prime shows, which people are hardly going to feel positively towards when they randomly interrupt the show they're already watching.)

It's soley to be annoying enough for people to pay additional money to remove them.

I appreciate it's got a lot going on, but it somewhat blows my mind that MaterialX is 10x as complicated as most shading languages.

Today I learnt that modern trains also run with a CAN bus. (Automotive bus.) Makes sense I guess.

This thing in London where they demolish an entire building behind the facade and then rebuild it still kind of freaks me out.

Every so often I ruminate on the fact NZ had a big public referendum in 2016 to change the flag from its colonial identikit version to one of five new options ... and decided to stick with the old one.

Playing a bunch of games for BAFTA games award judging makes me wonder why there's not an award for best introduction section. It's got to contain some world building, and ideally a controls tutorial of some sort. And it's surprising how often otherwise good games (especially AAA sequels) get it wrong.

Why yes, every commit should include thirty lines of comments documenting just how batshit insane the major VFX library you're using is.

Today I learnt via a co-worker's bug that numpy dtype=uint is actually an unsigned long under the hood. And hence a different size on Windows, which is LLP64, vs LP64 for most other OSes.
