Just pushed an update to the public version of my spherical + zonal harmonics library, as it was pretty out of date: https://github.com/andrewwillmott/sh-lib.

Now includes some shader utilities and a quick shader toy demo, https://www.shadertoy.com/view/dl3Bz8.

Brushing off some ancient spherical harmonics shader code (I wonder why), and it's a reminder of how heavily constrained we used to be. Lower bands in the vertex shader, for both normal and mirror directions, and then higher spec-only bands added in the fragment shader. On the lower-medium end some of the diffuse/spec VS eval was shared (ugh) and some coeffs in the higher bands that made the least visual difference with the environments dropped out.

Tell that to the youth of today etc. etc.

Watching the SIGGRAPH '23 links going up makes me think, isn't it great that so many of these include source code repos these days? Feels like such a great step forward for reproduceability over the last decade.

This thing in London where they demolish an entire building behind the facade and then rebuild it still kind of freaks me out.

This is my 30 years belated realization that PHIGS was a 'graphics' pun pretending to be an acronym. I'm not sure if that makes me hate it more or less. I'm leaning towards more. The focus on PHIGS was less welcome when I read Foley and Van Dam than the chapter on dot-matrix printing which at least had some timeless "how stuff worked" appeal. Teaching specific APIs in a textbook almost never ages well.

@andrewwillmott@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@christer @pervognsen Much like PHIGS, then :)

(Which inherited heavily from GKS if I recall correctly)

@christer @pervognsen I still retain a residual fondness for F&VD, based soley on the fact that when I was an undergrad, and it was prescribed as a textbook, the Uni bookshop accidentally put the US price on it (vs the much weaker NZ dollar), which made it a massive bargain.

Though maybe not when you realised that even then only 20-30% of it was relevant.

I'm still waiting for Rishi Sunak to circle back to "opening new pork markets!" He's been through everything else.

The only downside to the Machynlleth Comedy Festival is watching our internet go in the toilet for the weekend 😄. Brilliant event otherwise.

So, Unity’s new CEO is from Zynga and EA (and more recently, Fitbit). Mkay, mkay.😢 https://investors.unity.com/news/news-details/2024/Unity-Appoints-Matthew-Bromberg-as-New-CEO/default.aspx

@pervognsen @aras People forget very quickly (well, I doubt Aras did :) ), that the board picked JR with a particular course in mind. Of course they were going to go for someone similar to replace him. With no doubt similar results.

@pervognsen @aras (I always found the gap between the C-suite at EA and the people actually making the games mind boggling. Almost different species 😄. At least, after Larry Probst and Bing Gordon went.)

Mind-blowing just how much money's been wasted on the Tories' latest attempt to import US-style gerrymandering. I wonder if it's more or less than Rwanda.

andrewwillmott,
@andrewwillmott@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@obsurveyor I'm talking about importing a culture of voter suppression, there are a lot of different methods to choose from. We already have some of the boundary-changing shennanigans here, but they're not as distorting as some states in the US. We don't have the practice of shutting down polling stations in the "wrong" areas and causing multi-hour queues to discourage pople yet, and hopefully we never do, but \o/.

andrewwillmott,
@andrewwillmott@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@sol_hsa The thing is, the existing system works fine here, in fact better than most I would say. (NZ has a similar system and I was a polling worker for a few years back in the day.) A handful of disputed votes in a country of 66 million is a specious reason to change things, especially when it affects how easy it is to vote.

BTW, is it compulsory to vote in Finland like Australia? I think they have the right idea there.

andrewwillmott,
@andrewwillmott@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@pervognsen mostly it works as before, you turn up to your local polling station where they have a register. But now you have to bring photo ID, in a country that has no ID card system.

Love this. Given how carefully they've modelled faces vs vertices, there must be Roman icosahedra out there?
