Not sure I'd want to live on either side of this operation 😬

The only downside to the Machynlleth Comedy Festival is watching our internet go in the toilet for the weekend 😄. Brilliant event otherwise.

So, Unity’s new CEO is from Zynga and EA (and more recently, Fitbit). Mkay, mkay.😢 https://investors.unity.com/news/news-details/2024/Unity-Appoints-Matthew-Bromberg-as-New-CEO/default.aspx

@pervognsen @aras People forget very quickly (well, I doubt Aras did :) ), that the board picked JR with a particular course in mind. Of course they were going to go for someone similar to replace him. With no doubt similar results.

@pervognsen @aras (I always found the gap between the C-suite at EA and the people actually making the games mind boggling. Almost different species 😄. At least, after Larry Probst and Bing Gordon went.)

Love this. Given how carefully they've modelled faces vs vertices, there must be Roman icosahedra out there?

Mind-blowing just how much money's been wasted on the Tories' latest attempt to import US-style gerrymandering. I wonder if it's more or less than Rwanda.

andrewwillmott,
@andrewwillmott@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

(If you're wondering what counts as ID: if you're over 60, almost anything, including tail cards. If you're a student, a passport or the drivers license most of them don't have, and a student rail card is inadmissible. It's absolutely shameless.)

andrewwillmott,
@andrewwillmott@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@pervognsen mostly it works as before, you turn up to your local polling station where they have a register. But now you have to bring photo ID, in a country that has no ID card system.

andrewwillmott,
@andrewwillmott@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@sol_hsa The thing is, the existing system works fine here, in fact better than most I would say. (NZ has a similar system and I was a polling worker for a few years back in the day.) A handful of disputed votes in a country of 66 million is a specious reason to change things, especially when it affects how easy it is to vote.

BTW, is it compulsory to vote in Finland like Australia? I think they have the right idea there.

andrewwillmott,
@andrewwillmott@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@obsurveyor I'm talking about importing a culture of voter suppression, there are a lot of different methods to choose from. We already have some of the boundary-changing shennanigans here, but they're not as distorting as some states in the US. We don't have the practice of shutting down polling stations in the "wrong" areas and causing multi-hour queues to discourage pople yet, and hopefully we never do, but \o/.

I love the HDR on macbooks these days, particularly for photos off the phone, but I do wish screen capture supported it. Instead it seems to tone map the HDR screen down to something 8 bit.

It's depressing to realise that Amazon Prime's new ads regime isn't about making money off of ads. (They're all for other Prime shows, which people are hardly going to feel positively towards when they randomly interrupt the show they're already watching.)

It's soley to be annoying enough for people to pay additional money to remove them.

There is a world dumbest bird in my backyard. It repeatedly hits my window when flying, not hard enough to hurt itself, but enough to make some noise.

andrewwillmott,
@andrewwillmott@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@msinilo @TomF It's quite common, we had a chaffinch doing it for an afternoon just the other day, while it was sunny.

If it keeps it up you could try putting cling film over the pane or otherwise defeating the reflection.

Had this several times over the years with robins in particular. They're aggressive little bastards!

FUN FACT: if you place a 1080p image so that its width (long axis) lines up with the width (short axis) of a NFL regulation football field, your pixel grid has exactly 1 dpi

just to fuck up US customary units even further, I recommend that that be the definition of dpi going forward

andrewwillmott,
@andrewwillmott@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@rygorous @jon_valdes Heh. We used to have to deal with this for Football Manager, and the variability surprised even me, as a season ticket holder. I just looked it up again to check -- allowed dimensions are 100-130 yards x 50-100(!) yards.

We went from a 110 x 73 pitch at the old Tottenham Hotspur stadium to 115 x 75 at the new one five years ago. The size often affects the style of play of the home team, smaller and narrower in particular = more defensive in setup.

The one constant to UK rail travel admidst the wreckage of strikes, equipment failures, horrendously poor management and general gaslighting: There is always an onboard shop. It is always "cash only because the credit card machine isn't working". And it is always announced at 150% volume in the quiet carriage.

It is interesting players would dig into a 20-year-old game and actual find details where it is rendered more realistically than more recent titles.

andrewwillmott,
@andrewwillmott@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@bitinn Good lord :)

A bit of both if I recall. The CPU-generated lightmap would be updated with broad-scale pseudo-radiosity effects, but we also had the classic (at the time) most-influential-point-lights thing on the GPU, basically via 2-band SH. (I think! It was a long time ago.)
