When today started, I didn't foresee myself installing lynx(!!) just to finally be able to download a dataset off of google drive. (Large file virus "warning".)

I appreciate it's got a lot going on, but it somewhat blows my mind that MaterialX is 10x as complicated as most shading languages.

72 hours with the heat pump now. House is so WARM. We haven’t even insulated the ceilings in the new extensions but it’s already keeping us warm. Outdoor temp between -1C and 7C, CoP already at 3x. Pretty happy with that. It’s only going to get better when we get the remaining insulation in place too.

andrewwillmott,
@andrewwillmott@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@msinilo @neilhenning @rfernandez This is great to hear, as our place is 1886 and listed, so it has single glazing that we can't change 😬. I'm hoping to switch to a heat pump when the boiler hits EOL, but the insulation aspect has been worrying me.

I was asking myself why include/boost/preprocessor is 11 MB, but really, I'm happier off not knowing.

The hardest problem in VFX is texture paths.

This indentation should be illegal.

andrewwillmott,
@andrewwillmott@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@reedbeta @TomF @forrestthewoods @zeux some very early cpp's assumed that, but having blank characters before the # has been legal since C89. So you're on pretty safe ground :)

Which is worse: Waiting for a p4 command which has an endless spinning non-progress bar, or waiting for a p4 command which has frozen the p4 window?

@demofox looks at the general state of geopolitics maybe... maybe we don't.

RIP Annie Nightingale. Absolute UK radio legend. I really enjoyed her D&B shows over the last decade and more. (And that was in her 70s 😮.)

@TheVoidTLMB I had a sinking feeling when I saw her name was trending on The Bad Place 😢. What a life though.

@TheVoidTLMB I loved the Mark Ellen quote about her Sunday night show, that she was a "sort of fabulous and unreconstructed goth auntie."

OK, ok

Direwolves, so: make a big scary predator even bigger and scarier, I get it, but also, feels kinda on the nose, you know?

consider this:

dire geese (velociraptors)

cool? cool. now get ready:

dire hippos

andrewwillmott,
@andrewwillmott@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Humus @rygorous first you create an IWolfArea, from which you can retrieve multiple IWolfPack interfaces, and hence an IWolf.

(Don't forget to AddRef(), or your IWolf will disappear when IWolfPack is destroyed.)

RIP Niklaus Wirth, a giant of our field. The key contributor on Algol (hugely influential in language design), Modula, and of course Pascal.

What I don't understand is, shouldn't the lettuce also be getting a (larger) resignation honours list?

Fair play to BBC 1 for the appropriateness of literally ending 2023 with a rickroll.

Trying to ban gas stoves is such a weird hill to die on. Miniscule impact on the environment (can be a net negative in regions with very dirty electricity sources), very tiny safety wins, but makes a lot of people upset. And to some might not be super bad on its own, but becomes straw that breaks the camel's back on "government overreach trying to control everything in our lives".

(And for some specialized applications like stir fry or wok just objectively worse)

andrewwillmott,
@andrewwillmott@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@castano @ataylor Unless you live in the UK, where due to massive underinvestment the installation infrastructure is almost non-existent 🤦‍♂️.

Hopefully a new government this year changes that, because I'd like to make the switch in the next few years.

andrewwillmott,
@andrewwillmott@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@neilhenning @castano @ataylor There is a big shortage of suppliers and particularly experienced installers. In England and Wales at least. Great that this is not such an issue in the Highlands.

E.g., from a recent FT article, "it helps to explain why UK heat pump sales last year were a puny 1.9 per 1,000 households, putting the country a distant last behind 20 other European nations." France is 20, Ireland 10.

Additional data after installing clang 17 locally and separating into p1 (printf) and p2 (std::print), and adding p3 (fmt::print from https://github.com/fmtlib/fmt), all with -O3:

p1.o: 816 bytes
p2.o: 105,232 bytes (128 x)
p3.o: 1104 bytes (1.3 x)

time p1: 0.027 s
time p2: 1.033 s (40 x)
time p3: 0.270 s (10 x)

exe size ratio ignoring padding: p2: 46 x
p3: 1.2 x

@sol_hsa There is no logic, and it is a bit slower overall. It's simply that the C++ committee don't have compile time, object size, link time, complexity control, or other such things that matter in a large professional code base, as metrics.

I assume this is because the majority of them don't work with anything larger than single-author programs of less than a thousand lines. But I don't know. It's a puzzle to me!

andrewwillmott,
@andrewwillmott@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@sol_hsa
https://github.com/fmtlib/fmt is an example of what can be done in the same sphere if you do explicitly take those as metrics. There is some overhead, but it's in the range where you can easily argue it's worth it if you would like the usability and safety improvements it offers.

andrewwillmott,
@andrewwillmott@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@msinilo @sol_hsa Yeah, personally I'm with you on that, but in a team context with more junior engineers something like fmt could be the least worse option :)
