A reminder that "uncensored and unbiased" recently became a dog whistle for the far-right. :(

How come everyone's on Visual Studio 2022, but pretty much no one is using Visual Loft 2022?

@aras We call it Visual Bedsit over here.

FUN FACT: if you place a 1080p image so that its width (long axis) lines up with the width (short axis) of a NFL regulation football field, your pixel grid has exactly 1 dpi

just to fuck up US customary units even further, I recommend that that be the definition of dpi going forward

andrewwillmott,
@andrewwillmott@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@rygorous @jon_valdes Heh. We used to have to deal with this for Football Manager, and the variability surprised even me, as a season ticket holder. I just looked it up again to check -- allowed dimensions are 100-130 yards x 50-100(!) yards.

We went from a 110 x 73 pitch at the old Tottenham Hotspur stadium to 115 x 75 at the new one five years ago. The size often affects the style of play of the home team, smaller and narrower in particular = more defensive in setup.

The one constant to UK rail travel admidst the wreckage of strikes, equipment failures, horrendously poor management and general gaslighting: There is always an onboard shop. It is always "cash only because the credit card machine isn't working". And it is always announced at 150% volume in the quiet carriage.

It is interesting players would dig into a 20-year-old game and actual find details where it is rendered more realistically than more recent titles.

@bitinn Man, that's so nice to see. First game I worked on. I implemented the lighting system, material system, and effects system, fresh off of a Global Illumination PhD from CMU. Plus a few other things. Even the lot imposterisation system for the neighbourhood launch screen was quite advanced for the time.

I thought in particular the guy who owned the animation system was on the top of his game, but sadly he left the games industry a few years afterwards.

20 years though. Argh!

andrewwillmott,
@andrewwillmott@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@bitinn Good lord :)

A bit of both if I recall. The CPU-generated lightmap would be updated with broad-scale pseudo-radiosity effects, but we also had the classic (at the time) most-influential-point-lights thing on the GPU, basically via 2-band SH. (I think! It was a long time ago.)

@sinbad Oh god.

I've previously been gated by care packages from people coming back from NZ/Australia. And the occasional order from https://www.sanza.co.uk/New_Zealand_Shop.asp.

Today I learnt via a co-worker's bug that numpy dtype=uint is actually an unsigned long under the hood. And hence a different size on Windows, which is LLP64, vs LP64 for most other OSes.

So, I don't really understand the point of Google search any more.

I just checked back in with it for a search query, for the first time in forever, as I wasn't turning up much with the alternatives I use. (Due to the web slowly collapsing under its own weight, sigh.) The first two pages were solid "sponsored" links trying to sell me something, often from stores that demonstrably have nothing to do with the term, and large pictures of the same thing.

Why bother? The PSNR is terrible.

andrewwillmott,
@andrewwillmott@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

It's such a disappointment, it was an amazing company for the first ten years or so. But now search of that quality is a commodity, and they don't seem to have been able to stick at that much else.

I guess that's unfair, Maps is demonstrably a good product despite my niggles, and Mail's okay if you can stomach your inbox page sucking up 1GB. The last two places I've worked have run on their App suite. "Meet" has improved remarkably after Zoom lit a rocket under them.

But search... sigh.

Every so often I ruminate on the fact NZ had a big public referendum in 2016 to change the flag from its colonial identikit version to one of five new options ... and decided to stick with the old one.

@TheVoidTLMB They should've just gone for the silver fern proper IMHO, it's what half the world knows anyway (if they know NZ at all :) ), but of the ones put forward, I agree that was aesthetically the best.

Zoomers: that weird voicemail icon in Android (maybe elsewhere)? I think that's supposed to depict reel-to-reel tape.

I'm a millennial born in 1984.

I have never actually seen that kind of audio tape in person either. (I did see a reel-to-reel film projector though.)

Why yes, every commit should include thirty lines of comments documenting just how batshit insane the major VFX library you're using is.

andrewwillmott,
@andrewwillmott@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

(The same library makes iteration difficult because including just one of the relevant headers takes 6s compile time on an M3. Mostly because they use boost. With its 170 MB of header files, 3x as large as the build binaries of the actual damn library using it. Those 170 MB of headers have to be present to compile against their own 'external' headers, because, no encapsulation discipline.)

(No, I am not currently a happy camper.)
