Life's an array of arrays. 101010 exactly.
Philosophy & Programming. I love coding, comic-books (and no-comic books), films and (dark and loud mostly) music. I suck at all of this. <3

This Friday if nothing in contrary happens I put an end on my Associate Degree on Programming studies. It will be my last day in my intern gig, and I'll have to defend my final project later (a wacky Laravel API, why not). So I'm officially looking for a job. I've been looking for offers and it looks like it will be... Hard. From Delphi seniors to "juniors" with years of experience and the responsibilities of... A junior with years of experience, AKA a senior. :P Wish me luck! :D

@ftpl Thanks! Any bit of encouragement helps! :D

array,
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

@ariadna Thanks! :D One good example I had from you is that you sometimes have to fight -metaphorically! XD- your way in and out of things... These years of study have been my own example, so I think I'll just keep on struggling until I find my way into being a code monkey... And most of all, being happy being that! <3

array,
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

@ariadna Nyom nyom. XD

array,
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

@danielsiepmann I really appreciate the suggestion, thanks! :D What I have in mind though is first try some enterprise which has a physical workplace near me, so I can share an office with some colleagues, before trying the working on remote option. It will be harder because I live in a rather small city in a small island... But other classmates have already find local gigs, I'll try my luck. ;)

array,
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

@danielsiepmann That said, may I ask how's working with TYPO3 for you? One of my classmates has done his intern gig working with WordPress mostly, and he really hated it because he couldn't really do "coding", which is what most of us really want to do now. Is it different in your job? Would you recommend, in case I get the chance to land a similar position?

array,
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

@golemwire Thank you so much! <3

array,
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

@danielsiepmann I can see your experience with TYPO3 is quite different from that of my classmate, and on paper it looks good to me, thanks for sharing! :D And I take your word, I'll remember this if something TYPO3-related arises (and I guess you know your PHP good enough to accept questions too? XD). Right now I think I would be happy if I could do some backend web dev, PHP or Java + SQL, but I could try other languages I guess, and/or frontend too... But I'm really open to options. :D

array,
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

@fedops Thanks! As always, I'm too dumb to see my defeat, so I keep on fighting, just swapping enemies on the way! XD

And not particularly, no, I just mentioned that gig as an example of a real local job offer I found in my first try, I wasn't really expecting something like that... I live in a veeeery small island, so that kind of "diversity" in job offers was kind of unexpected. But I don't know more from Delphi than what I could get from an ad hoc read on Wikipedia, so... XD

@btp@fosstodon.org avatar

I think I'm done with Ubuntu and other Debian-based distros.

array,
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

@btp @benjaminhollon Not so delayed on Debian Sid or Ubuntu latest non-LTS, are they? Not to mention you can use Flatpak, Appimage or snap... ;)

And poo, why exactly? 🤔

array,
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

@benjaminhollon @btp I spot another problem here: Ubuntu 20.04. It was released in April 2020, and it's a LTS. It's hardly a wonder their packages being "outdated". XD Maybe try a more recent version next time? ;)

array,
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

@benjaminhollon @btp I switched all my machines to 23.10 just recently, after being on 22.04 since it came out. A great, very stable release IMO. Boring (in the good sense!) indeed. XD

And apt may be a bit slower than, say, pacman or xbps, but running natively and on a reasonably modern computer there's not much of a difference, and in fact, the slower pace of updates against rolling released may save time indeed. ;) "Clunky"... I just don't get that part. XD

array,
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

@benjaminhollon @btp I use apt (Debian), pacman (Arch) and xbps (Void) pretty frequently (and I've used quite a few others in the past) and I can just say that they all do their job. There's bits and pieces that I prefer from this one or the other, but for my use cases they're all good... It just takes some time to get used to each I guess. ;)

Having learned programming mostly in #rstats, I realize that I have a very fuzzy mental model of what "compiling" code even means. Can someone point me to an explanation of what it means to "compile" or "build from source" for semi- or non-experts?

array,
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

@LeafyEricScott "Compile" or "build from source" is generally a shortcut for describing a process wich is generally a little bit more complicated that what's explicitly done by the compiler. Here's an approximation: https://www.baeldung.com/cs/compiler-linker-assembler-loader or, in C https://courses.cs.washington.edu/courses/cse378/97au/help/compilation.html
Note that some languages' toolchains build their code straight into machine-readable code, while others turn your code into bytecode which is in turn "read" by other software, like a VM (the Java JVM is one of those). :)

array,
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

@LeafyEricScott Happy if this helps. :D Just take into account that those links came from a quick search, I've done a quick read and they apparently look good, but maybe you would prefer to do your own search. This is IMO a rather fascinating process and very interesting to read about. :)

One of the very first articles I planned to post on Musings was a list of my favorite books. It's now a complete draft, but has sat on my computer for over a year, collecting dust.

I dug it up, planning to brush it up, address any changes, and post it, but noticed something: the only female author to feature on the list is Agatha Christie.

http://benjaminhollon.com/musings/reconsidering-my-reading-choices/

(incidentally, this may be the record holder for my shortest blog post)

array,
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

@benjaminhollon Out of the top of my mind: Anne Sexton, Amélie Nothomb, Angélica Liddell, Sarah Kane, Unica Zürn, Kathy Acker, Annemarie Schwarzenbach, Angela Carter, Clarice Lispector, Maria Daraki, Edith Stein, Alejandra Pizarnik, Virginia Woolf, Mary Shelley, Joan Didion, Anna Starobinets, Tatiana Țîbuleac, Sadie Plant, Claire Colebrook... :D

array,
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

@benjaminhollon To be honest I see it's a list too fitting to my own tastes... If you do even a bit of research on some of the names, I'm sure you'll see a pattern. :) Anyway, I hope there's something in here that you like, enjoy your reading! :D

array,

@sotolf @benjaminhollon +1 for Ursula, I should have mention her myself. It's on the top of my SF writers list, very close to my own "sacred trinity" of Philip K. Dick, Stanislaw Lem and J. G. Ballard. <3

If you're using DuckDuckGo on Firefox or a Firefox-derived browser on Android, make sure that the Dark Reader addon is disabled for DDG. I just found out that it was the source of the big slowdown when trying to do searches.

Now I'm back on DuckDuckGo for my searches, and I don't have to put up with Brave search's bizarre and disturbing AI suggestions.

array,
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

@RL_Dane Dark Reader tends to slow down page load in general, some sites more affected than others, I've noticed. :) But now that you mention it, in my phone DDG is really fast, but not in my laptop... It may take a while. I don't have Dark Reader in my laptop, but maybe another addon may be the culprit, I have to check this. ;)

Yesterday at work one of my colleagues asked about my Sway setup. He never saw a tiling WM before, so I explained a bit how it goes. "But this is not Ubuntu!", he said. "It is, indeed", I replied, because, well, it is. I guess some people tend to identify Ubuntu with Gnome (and not vanilla Gnome for that). Other than that, I still don't know if he was positively impressed or just thought than I'm a weird freak. He gets to know be just a bit more, he'll have no doubt about it. XD

Back here 🙆🏻‍♀️
Not really sure how I'm planning to use this account this time, but I'll figure something out 😌

array,

@ariadna Welcome back! Oh I've really missed you, it's so good to see you in my timeline again! <3

array,
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

@ariadna And it's been so long that I don't exactly remember if you know me with this account... I was Sakkara before, in case the new name doesn't ring a bell, I hope the old one does! In any case I have plenty of good memories from you. :D

array,
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

@ariadna Same! :D I hope everything is running great for you, you're such a lovely and wise person! It will be so good to keep learning from you, now that you grace my timeline again! :D <3

array,
@array@fosstodon.org avatar

@ariadna I for one I'm anything but angry. XD Your "shallow trivial stuff" so far looks great, so feel free to keep sharing. It's really refreshing to see someone sharing the good parts mostly for a change. :D
