Man, when it works, is pretty darn magical.

Especially the SMS integration.

Trying to setup a computer without internet (not for security reasons, distraction from working on stuff reasons) is far harder than I thought it would be. This computer is on another location away from wifi and ethernet and I don't want either.

Several distributions work live from cd DVD USB or microwave-- but none install to this 2018 Dell XPS desktop.

Again, this "air-gapped" computer isn't for security reasons.

So far, void linux and knoppix work the best live.

Tried Debian 12?

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

@cainmark

That's wild. It works beautifully on my 2022 LG Gram, which was a beast for compatibility when I first got it two last January. It would have all kinds of random hangs on even the latest kernel (was running arch-based at the time)

RL_Dane,

@cainmark

That's unusually difficult for a relatively older machine. Hm!

I relate. My machines at home are a 2021 Pinebook Pro (basically the CPU of a 2016 chromebook), a 2010 thinkpad, a 2012 dell laptop, and a raspberry pi 4, all running Linux or .

Is it just or did something flip in Google in the past year or so?

Google seems to be making progressively insane decisions like shutting down their Python contributors along with shuttering Google Domains... while launching stinkers like Google Vids

It feels like they're speedrunning to become IBM.

Monday 18:18
At Times Coffee House, enjoying a large Mug of Hazelniccino, with a Bacon & Cheese Scone and a slice of Pineapple & Coconut Cake.
Shall be buying Arianna a half pound of English Breakfast Tea.
Visited Pastor Jack Brooks at Central Baptist Hospital. He was looking good, and is having a heart stent cleaning procedure tomorrow.
Met up with his son Alex, wife Lynne, and Ironworks Pike Community Church chairman elder Paul Hill. We prayed together.

"totoro" is how a Japanese child says "tororu".

Which in turn is from the Scandinavian word "troll".

Trolls are not warm and fluffy creatures.

RL_Dane,

@thor

I thought "totoro" was just the kid's attempt to match Totoro's random vocalizations.

The number of websites where the "Remember me" checkbox does absolutely nothing is pretty infuriating.

Especially when said website wants to 2FA (SMS, of course) your butt every time you log in.

It could be that some of the privacy protections on my browser is foiling their fingerprinting, but if they're relying on fingerprinting rather than just a cookie to retain a login, they deserve a collective wedgie.

Right, because totally pointless officious stuff is security, but security practices during development is totally unreasonable and a waste of time. ;)

As I just posted elsewhere online:

“Oh my fucking god is this how thinking should work?!? What the hell. What the fuck. You all didn’t have this all the time did you? And not tell me?”

First adhd medication dose. This is really, really clear.

Mid-life diagnosis? That just happened to me a month ago.

"So I didn't have to be internally screaming at myself all this time for my brain to move in a straight line all this time? EGAD."

Good grief, I could have had an actual career in tech instead of getting sidelined by my lack of focus.

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

@NanoRaptor @bartreardon @violator

I have a status indicator on my task bar that constantly outputs the last line of my work log so that if someone asks me what I'm working on I CAN ACTUALLY TELL THEM SOMETHING instead of looking at them blankly.

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

@NanoRaptor

It's tragic that there's so much out there.

I had so many people tell me I DON'T have ADHD because of my hyperfocus.

I only realized I did (and did get properly tested as well) because of randomly coming across ADHD videos on youtube shorts (an awful platform, but there's always a silver lining, I suppose. ;)

What in the world is wrong with this machine?

Something as simple as syncthing running, an apt upgrade, or even just doing a dd of a gigabyte from /dev/zero to a junk file can cause the system load to scream up to 10 (quad-core system), and it starts freezing.

Do I have a dodgy SSD???

Update 1: I am using full disk encryption (LUKS)

Update 2: gsmartcontrol output https://bin.benjaminhollon.com/fersimebia

Update 3: I'm going to try copying everything over to a spare SSD later.

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

@OpenComputeDesign

I always use full disk encryption.

Disk usage is <40%

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

Look at this (during a 1GB dd):

22:15:29 up 1 day, 14:27, 1 user, load average: 0.99, 1.26, 1.53
64934
22:15:56 up 1 day, 14:28, 1 user, load average: 7.05, 2.66, 1.98
64934

The load just explodes in a single second

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

@Linux_in_a_Bit

I'll definitely be booting from a live USB. I have done live system migrations before (dding a running disk to another machine -- before VMWare and containers became common), but that's REALLY rolling the dice. XD

Stopped wearing a everywhere a couple weeks ago after wearing one everywhere (except at home, duh) every day for four years and a little change.

Sometimes it feels weird to not wear one, but that didn't last long. I've adapted to the still-somewhat-dangerous new "normal."

I'll probably miss not wearing a KN95 next February during the cold snap. It really helps keep you warm. ;)

I won't miss anything else about them, other than the fact that I've never had because of them.

RL_Dane,
@RL_Dane@fosstodon.org avatar

@canleaf

Just kinda felt like I had done my time. I was the last person with a mask on in 90% of the places I went to.

I'll still wear one if I'm sick or if there's an elevated risk, but I guess I'm finally just tired of it.
