Yeah, I saw someone on Lemmy showing screenshots two posts that were copied exactly from like 8 months ago except for a single new legitimate comment. It’s wild what LLMs are doing to online interaction and honestly… this is just the beginning.
This isn’t about immediately filtered content, like the disgusting DuffMan George Floyd meme, or Holocaust denial. That’s pretty well kept in check by mod tools. I’m also not talking about cogent or even pointed political discussion....

Same. If we want Lemmy and the Fediverse to succeed we all need to do our part to stop propaganda. They spend money to spread misinformation, but there’s no budget for fighting it… just us.
I don’t think they’re trying to lose. I think they’re overrun by corporate influence as badly as the Republicans, and have no strong leadership to coordinate and guide them against a relatively coordinated right wing with foreign support.
It’s not normal content, it’s propaganda. Whether that’s technically spam or not, it’s disinformation and intentionally corrosive content designed to spread division and hate.
It’s not about me filtering out their propaganda and creating an echochamber. It’s about resisting propaganda from dictators, and about playing a part in the Fediverse to help it survive and replace corporate social media.
People checking out Lemmy see Hexbear comments and go back to Reddit or wherever they came from. There are constant threads asking “how can I block a whole instance”.
I’m tolerant of different opinions, authoritarian propaganda isn’t a different opinion, it’s large scale coordinated misinformation. In this case coming from a government that has a long history of brutally killing people with “the wrong opinion”.
