It's a shame Google's AI overviews are only available in the USA. I want to make funny screenshots, too :woozy_baa:

@volpeon I imagine it'll be coming soon because with all the memes about how bad it is, someone somewhere is bound to say "the metrics show great engagement". 😩

This banner is more complicated than you'd think. :drgn_mlem: I wanted to give the header a banner-colored background that (almost) never looks disconnected from the banner.
Your first instinct probably would be to make the header transparent and add some empty space to the top of the image, but then then the padding scales with the image and you get a humongous padding on wide viewports and a way too small padding on narrow viewports.

My solution is a border-image which uses a 1px slice from the banner image. It scales exactly how I want most of the time.

@volpeon I gotta say, "Winged Delivery" plus the logo are giving me Adine vibes.

Adine vibes are good vibes. ❤️

I want to find a good way to colorize elements in the background. Fading to light doesn't really work. Fading to black makes the whole drawing look very heavy on shadows. I colorized them blue so you can tell what I'm talking about, but maybe a more stylistic approach is just the solution I need (definitely not this blue, of course :drgn_mlem: )

balinares,
@balinares@furry.engineer avatar

@volpeon Decrease the value range. Things in the foreground have darker darks and lighter lights. Things in the background have less contrast and tend toward mid-values, increasingly so the further into the background you go. See for example https://i.pinimg.com/originals/a3/5e/a9/a35ea9115abfa59e3437de1a0f06da2a.jpg (charcoal mountains are a staple of learning about values in art classes I guess).

Reducing saturation can also help backgrounding shapes, but in this case the color scheme is already low on saturation, so this may not make much difference.

AHA just found out something that doesn't work with the Retrotink 4K
And of course it's an Atari ST demo!

Left: cheap amazon converter
Right: RetroTink 4K 1.1.0 with wide tolerance activated (the picture is actually rolling horizontally, very unstable)

The XXX international demo on Atari ST. The picture is distorted.

balinares,
@balinares@furry.engineer avatar

@fenarinarsa Ooh, la démo utilise un timing bizarre pour les hsync qui perturbe le Retrotink?

balinares,
@balinares@furry.engineer avatar

@KeyJ @fenarinarsa CRTs are analog and have some measure of leniency around signal timing. There are time windows during which vsync or hsync signals are expected and properly handled.

For instance I once had a similar issue playing, I think, Thunder Blade on Amstrad CPC, just with hsync. The game used an unusual screen resolution. Picture kept rolling vertically much like the picture in Cyril's screenshot is rolling horizontally. I thought the game was just broken, until I figured there was a knob at the back of the screen to adjust the hsync window. That was enough to fix it!

A lot of demos messed with the CRT controller because for some effects that's a lot faster than pushing pixels into RAM, among other reasons. That's probably what's happening here.

@balinares@furry.engineer avatar

@fenarinarsa @KeyJ Man, thanks for the in-depth explanation and for the link, this is super interesting!

So I got the Steam Deck, and it didn't turn on. No power LED glowing either when I plugged it in. The BIOS reset route seems to work, though. Valve really needs to address these issues. :woozy_baa:

Pendant que tout le monde se lance sur de gros jeux moi j'ia juste profité de la promo sur Just Shapes & Beats et je kiffe.

Par contre je suis une grosse merde donc j'ai activé le mode relax sans aucune honte.

@fenarinarsa OUIIII.

Second Reality by Future Crew is 30 years old 🫠

The most iconic MS-DOS PC demo running on Intel 486, released to the public in October 1993

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iw17c70uJes

Note that no video capture can actually replicate the exact experience on a real 486 PC because the demo switches video modes very often, and I think a lot of effects run at ~70fps.

While I suspect this is sampling bias, virtually everyone I know in tech is just exhausted and hanging on by a thread. I think that not one of my friends would recommend their company to someone they cared about, and that's a striking change from just a year ago.

balinares,
@balinares@furry.engineer avatar

@gairdeachas Yes, and yes. -_-

It feels like the whole industry has lost its marbles all at once. This is going to be disastrous once the momentum built up in previous years runs out, but apparently only quarterly earning reports count now, so...
