Since this week's theme is and I was born April 1980, I have to talk about TELEKON.

Gary Numan released Telekon, my favorite of his records, in 1980. It was the first vinyl I bought as a teen in the 90s. Hearing this intro track and the album that followed was mindblowing. Definitely listen to this whole record if you get a chance.

Here's "This Wreckage", the first song on Telekon, one of the best album opening tracks EVER:

@jake4480 @Kitty I was on a Numan kick a few months ago. But I don't think I did much with this album. Will check it out.

Spotted in the wild: a cybertruck painted rust-colored. Well, that's a time-saver, I guess.

@mathling Are you sure it was paint?

Building on my wireframe 3d library... 3d text. The nice thing is I can just pass it the string "hello" and get this object that I can render.

Yes, re-doing stuff I did 20 years ago. But I like to thing a little better this time. A little.

the word "hello" rendered in white 3d wireframe lines, rotating in space.

The perspective on these two cubes is fine, but the fact that they are rotating in opposite directions makes it hard to keep them straight.

If I get the small one rotating correctly in my mind, the big one gets all warped out of shape.

Then the big one snaps into place and the small one is messed up.

Neat illusion.

There's a certain graphical formula I've been using for 20+ years. I ran across a totally different way of doing it today and my mind was blown. Then I started doing it the old way and the new way and tweaking things so they looked the same.

In the end, the new way was exactly the way I've been doing it, just with a little different structure and var names.

whew!

These are just 2d circles painted to look like spheres. Decent illusion except when their z-values swap and they pop in front of each other.

Just realized that I've been on Fastmail for over two years now. Switched over during the great Google exodus of 2022. Can't think of any obvious downsides. It's been working great for me. And it's nice being that much less dependent on Google.

bit101,
@bit101@mstdn.social avatar

This all started because I was on the legacy Google Apps plan that you could use your own domain on. They said they were discontinuing that and I'd either have to pay or lose a bunch of my services. So I migrated my email to Fastmail, and other things elsewhere.

The cost to fix my broken USB port would be just about the same as to buy a brand new, upgraded version of the Thinkpad I bought a year and a half ago.

@matthewconroy I foolishly thought they'd try to solder the usb connector back on. I watched some Youtube videos of people doing that exact thing. Tempted to do it myself, but afraid I'd make it worse.

I almost got a lighter out and started swaying mid way through! Also, the softly spoken "(software)" near the start is fun.
