LINX Board Elections 2024

TL;DR: I'd be really grateful for your votes.

After 3 years (it seems nowhere near that long!) I am standing for re-election to the LINX Board for a further 3 year term. I believe I've provided useful, cautious and thoughtful input into the Board over the three years so far, and I'd really appreciate your votes to enable me to stay on for a further term, and continue my work and input.

If you missed the aurora than let me help you.

Think back to the most underwhelming Winamp visualisation. That. That’s what you missed.

You’re welcome.

Dropped something at the post office. Already had breakfast. And it’s only just after ten. I will not be sustaining this level of productivity.

Tried to vote. Turns out you can’t vote in a polling station if you’ve had a postal vote? When did this happen?

bloor,
@bloor@bloor.tw avatar

@ahnlak you cant@do that either any more

bloor,
@bloor@bloor.tw avatar

@ahnlak not without an extra form being filled in

bloor,
@bloor@bloor.tw avatar

@mansr you used to be able to. And, if you never received your postal, how would you see it?

A small review of Spirited Away at the Coliseum for those who like Ghibli stuff and maybe also saw Totoro (or did not see Totoro and are thinking this will be a good alternative).

We saw it last night. It was good, but the Coliseum is hot and cramped and (this was a big deal) the play is 100% in Japanese, with subtitles to the left and right of the stage. In practice this means you miss action in the centre, when looking at the titles, then you get over-focussed on the titles, and miss action.

bloor,
@bloor@bloor.tw avatar

@kavey It was more a continuous niggle than that I missed something particular. One tended to dart to the right to read, then back to the centre.

It wasn't just me who said this.

I really do not think they have made a big deal of the fact it's Japanese and subtitled. It came as a total surprise to us.

The sets and acting were really good.

But it was not as good as Totoro, in my view. And a part of that was that it was distracting keeping looking centre->right->centre->right.

bloor,
@bloor@bloor.tw avatar

@kavey It also made me realise why subtitles are usually (on TV) in the middle at the bottom; it allows you to kind of still capture most of the action.

Being to the left and right was tricky. It may be because it's the ENO that operas are often in other languages (mostly Italian?) so they subtitle left and right. But there is less physical action in Opera.

@kavey Just on the value-for-money question....

I was sat behind someone quite tall and that mattered in a way I'm pretty sure it did not at Barbican.

I mean... I think these seats were cheaper than the Totoro ones. But I still think Totoro was better value.

Got the battery replaced in my iPhone 13 mini, official part done by Apple in store.

Good points: they did it free, phone just under 2y old, and had lost 19% battery health. Well done.

Bad points: somehow someone else’s name got attached to my email and phone number, and nobody could really say why. And weirdly I overheard a conversation where exactly the same had happened to another customer; wrong name, right contact details. Very weird.

Nice to have my 13 mini back at 100% bat health!

Oh this could be awkward.

@cybergibbons and I have been asked to give a w3w based talk. But I've had the suggested event title and blurb through and, er, I don't think it has been fully realised that we don't like w3w and think it's bad.

Luckily, I have a call with the organiser, so I have an opportunity to explain our stance.

This will be a fun zoom call.

I am testing some Meze 99 headphones. I will report my findings, for what they're worth.

They are comfortable, and surprisingly light. They also look decent.

I am happy to say that the vast majority of replies to this Facebook post were in the nature of “don’t go then” or “it’s all bullshit” or “psychics are either liars or mentally ill”.

Every time I rant off about psychics someone says “what’s the harm”. Here it is :

A little bit of insight to disgust you before a weekend. A local school not only selects based on the faith of the parents, but parents also "pretend to be religious" to get their kids in. And, one local church even has a "church passport" that gets stamped to "prove" you turned up, for this very reason.

Told you you'd be disgusted.

It is unbelievable and disgusting that (correctly) an private company cannot discriminate on this basis, but schools are allowed to.

bloor,
@bloor@bloor.tw avatar

More info, from the school itself.

And a lesson in borderline casuistry starting with something being described as "fair and transparent".

bloor,
@bloor@bloor.tw avatar

What a great idea, separating one group of kids from almost all others, telling them they are special and the other kids are wrong in some way.

That has definitely worked well in other places hasn't it?

bloor,
@bloor@bloor.tw avatar

@linkovitch The problem is, because of things like funding models and the selective intake, very often these schools "appear" to be the best in an area. Causing more parents to (understandably/forgivably) be economical with the real truth about their faith in the hopes that their kids get places.

bloor,
@bloor@bloor.tw avatar

@nf3xn This is not a Public school.

It is a public school; i.e. a state funded school.

There is no confusion in this case.

bloor,
@bloor@bloor.tw avatar

@nf3xn They are.

And it is mad.

bloor,
@bloor@bloor.tw avatar

@interpipes it’s an absolute disgrace from several angles

Many would venture the nuclear bomb as the worst invention of all time. Some might suggest leaded petrol, or social media even.

All wrong.

The worst invention of all time is the speaker phone on a mobile phone.

Yea, I’m on a train.
