Very interesting interview with @writnelson today on @RemapRadio! Lots of great takes, thanks for the interview :-)

Took child 1 down to the docks in to check out the , a scientific vessel that’s travelled all over the world, including across the North Pole and up the Amazon river! We got a lil tour, 15 mins about the boat and its history and mission and then another 15 mins breaking down the process of collecting data, sampling and analysing seawater. Kid was incredibly into it (he’s an avid fan after all) and well able to follow it – impressed and delighted for the lil 5yo tyke.

I’m running on a raspberry pi, but hitting weird stability issues. Shame, it’s very impressive otherwise.

Oh god this is beautiful! https://www.raspberrypi.com/news/most-unusual-sentence-extractor-hackspace-70/ I think if I were to attempt something similar I’d try to avoid using a browser, just go with a text editor syncing to Dropbox or a NAS drive. I’d also revisit that idea - either buy a frontlit display or make peace with using a desk lamp (and get a nice one!). It’d be great to keep the power needs low. Fair play to Other Ben on this though, it’s a stunner.

  • bursaar,

@bohemianchic all the Deus Ex games (except 2, though I do like it!). Rolled credits on Citizen Sleeper, that was great. Ditto BotW. I’m really struggling to remember any more past that…maybe some old adventure games?

    bursaar,

@bohemianchic oh shit. One Hundred Percent 💯? Basically nothing lol.

What the hell is doing? I've tried to turn off all optimizations, turn off everything else running, but any video call I get on just turns my Intel MacBook into a space heater. Anyone else seeing this?

    bursaar,

    @Conornash yep! mine too ¯_(ツ)_/¯

My sister used to live in the middle house here in the mid-90s. It’s been left empty since she moved out over a quarter of a century ago. Looks like it’s been left to rot. Deliberate dereliction should be a crime.

    bursaar,

@paulduanefilm I know that spot well. It's bizarre. Like McWilliams says – dereliction is a symptom of wealth, not poverty. Tax that thing at 50% property value per year it's left empty. It'd be put to use licketysplit.

@kd c'mere your sites are cool – what are they built on?

The easiest way to get a photo from my personal phone to my work computer is to share the photo with my wife on WhatsApp, download the photo to my personal computer and post it to fedi, and load my fedi profile on my work computer.

    bursaar,

@annika jfc what a pain! That's like the process of getting screenshots off my Steam Deck but I came up with a way to do it over ssh (which is still ridiculous) https://now.ben.ie/2023/08/26/slurping-up-screenshots-from-my-steam-deck/ – iOS & MacOS share nicely with each other, but I wouldn't know where to begin getting photos off my iPhone onto a Windows machine. Email!?

    bursaar,

    @annika omg you're right - it's down!

    bursaar,

@annika ha! OK I think it's back now. Thanks for mentioning DeltaChat, this is cool!

Really loving this interview with Peter Molyneux https://pca.st/episode/ed17ca81-6727-4a39-a209-b0fbfd3c77a9 he comes across as passionate, creative and a bit more aware of his missteps. I’m glad he’s still around making games but I also miss his grand pronouncements.

I don't understand the need for selling information.

And by information, in this case, I'm talking about news.

Why charge people to get information that could better the lives of mankind?

It seems like a very foreign concept to me.

    bursaar,

@majorlinux state-funded broadcasters are a good way forward here. Well-resourced newsrooms without paywalls or ads.

    bursaar,

@carmalade I love the lil tray/drawers! I always end up making mine a pile of crud and putting them away after six months.

Is anybody else deeply suspicious of the big tech companies like Tesla and Apple suddenly deciding that they're in favour of Right To Repair laws (that they've been bitterly fighting for years)? Maybe it's just surrender, but I worry that there's deviousness at work, like they've spotted a loophole.

Is anybody else here on a near-pathological self-hosting buzz?

    bursaar,

@kd ah I don’t mean for Mastodon specifically, I just mean in general. I’ve tinkered over the years but a few months ago set up a bunch of services I’m using all the time now on a couple of rPi 4s.

    bursaar,

@feyo Ha! I've tinkered a bit over the years but I now have a pretty sustainable setup running on a couple of pi4s that I could quickly rebuild and repopulate in the event of catastrophic hardware/software problems. Running (among other things): Homer, Plex, *arr indexers, FreshRSS, Calibre, AudioBookShelf, a couple of Wordpress sites, nginx, Portainer, URL Watch, code-server, Mealie, Wallabag. Loving almost all of them – not using Mealie much, would love an alternative. You?

    bursaar,

@feyo FreshRSS, URL Watch abd Wallabag (even though it's mysteriously very slow!) I use every single day. Trying to use Forgejo too but can't figure out how to clone over ssh from a container 🤔

    bursaar,

@feyo I have been reflecting a lot lately on why I'm enjoying it. The autonomy is amazing – not paying rent to live under someone else's rules online. I'm an iOS/MacOS user, and while the latter is actually pretty open (despite what non-users think), iOS is just so locked down. Self-hosted services are one way I can really get much more out of my phone.

    bursaar,

@blackvoid ha! I can’t imagine hosting email. The terror. Considered setting up a lil mail server but just for the services to use.

    bursaar,

@feyo I'm pretty curious about Home Assistant. I'm running everything on rPi4s, which are amazing, but I've noticed that if I overload them with containers they'll crash occasionally, and I don't want to be stuck with the lights on or off 😆
