I took the annual @protonprivacy annual survey today and they got generally glowing reviews from me. I have no hesitation about my upcoming annual renewal. That said, I am a bit concerned by the couple of questions regarding AI "features". I don't need a writing assistant, I really do not. I want to be able to access my Proton Drive on Linux and full Standard Notes integration.

@grrrr_shark @protonprivacy I hope they're paying attention. AI tools aren't like other unwanted features. Their carbon footprint cause actual harm IRL.

From an image of the sun taken a couple of days ago: "The Earth could easily fit under this long-extended prominence".

No way that this isn't at least somewhat humbling.

I am just so amazed at how well the @phanpy web client works with . I started self-hosting phanpy last night (it is a pure static web app) and it works seamlessly. Makes me very happy when things go like they're expected. Thank you for this @cheeaun!

I should have also copied @grunfink If you haven't had a chance to check out @phanpy, you should give it a shot. There are some similarities in approach. Clean and minimalistic.

If you're looking to host your very own single-user/a-few-users instance, you cannot go wrong with . It is simple to install on Ubuntu and works very well with some really solid clients. It is also written in C, so it is fast, with few dependencies. Great work @grunfink, you've got a new monthly supporter on Ko-fi!

It is endlessly amusing and frustrating to me how "people" (mostly billionaire speculators and their acolytes) keep talking about "building decentralized social media" when the is already a very real and very active decentralized social media. The challenge is that it cannot be monetized to their advantage and its structure is inherently anti-authoritarian, which doesn't center their own, very personal vision. So they will critique it and sideline it, but it isn't going anywhere.

Finally installed @grunfink! Straightforward process, no major issues. It works very well with @Tusky Only issue I've had has been adding attachments. Is that supported or is there a file limit size? In any case, great job. Big fan so far.

@grunfink @Tusky Ah, that makes sense. I'll fix it today. So far so good though!

@klopo @grunfink @Tusky Yes, that was the solution that worked for me. Sometimes search engines still work!

I had a long list of tasks I needed to get done today, including going to the gym, but in the end, I dillydallied and only got through a couple. At least I did laundry and got this instance running.

Getting running on this server has been straightforward. I spent longer hesitating on the top-level domain. Took a few minutes to get the systemd service up and running, but that was the most complicated step so far.

I am also happy to report that it works with both the phanpy.social web app and Tusky Android app, which is great. No need to change my user experience all that much.

If this instance performs well, I expect that I will eventually migrate that account here and wind down that instance. This domain name is more "meaningful" for social media anyway and will let me focus sanfranciscan.org on other projects.

One thing that I am particularly happy about is that this instance is running completely off my tiny little home server. No more VPS necessary! As long as I pay the domain name and my internet connection at home, I am golden.
