@NeadReport I'm in the south of the UK. And yeah everything seems to be working fine still!

I did not imagine I’d be seeing the actual northern lights from my garden! I’m in Hertfordshire (southern UK).

I was happy that my iPhone was picking up a faint green hue, but then the sky went bright pink!

I just turned around, and there’s more!

@matt it completely blew me away! I've never heard of it being visible from where I am in the UK

Am I being facetious, or is it weird that the camera section of the iPad somehow doesn't count towards the thickness?

Also, I bet I can be even more facetious and find a product that beats the claim that this is the "thinnest Apple product ever".

I just watched Perfect Days (2023). I haven't yet fully understood the
effect it's had on me. But I think it's one of the best films I've ever seen. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perfect_Days

What's Holding Me Back From Android?: https://chrishannah.me/posts/2024/04/2024-04-27-22-38/

chrishannah,
@chrishannah@fosstodon.org avatar

@gla I don't think so to be honest! Although I'd say that's more down to the apps I use, than the state of Android. I'd say the majority of the apps I use on my iPhone are either stock apps, or apps that are universal, like YouTube, Instagram, WhatsApp, etc.

chrishannah,
@chrishannah@fosstodon.org avatar

@gla From that list I only use NetNewsWire 😅

I think I'm going to work on a list of what's stopping me from leaving the iPhone. It feels like the list is shrinking, but I'm not 100% sure what’s left.

One thing I've never managed to use properly on the iPhone is Face ID. It's always been good at recognising my face and then unlocking the device. Although it's never been as fast as what I've seen others experience.

But I swear I'm always needing to enter my passcode. I get the “you need to use your passcode to unlock Face ID" message multiple times throughout most days. And I'm starting to think that I'm doing something wrong?

chrishannah,
@chrishannah@fosstodon.org avatar

@matt I just think, am I doing something by accident like tapping the screen when it's not facing me, or accidentally holding down buttons that then somehow reset the state and requiring a passcode.

I might have to give YouTube Music a real go soon. it seems to understand my tastes much better than any "normal" streaming service, and it seems to have a lot more variety.

If I ever switch away from using an iPhone, it would cause a massive cascading
effect on nearly every part of my digital (and some physical) life.

Simply because, if I could ever bring myself to break out of Apple's walled
garden, I would want to steer clear of anything similar. I wouldn't want to just
replace everything Apple with everything Google, for example.

And yet, as much as I can imagine this would be hard work, I wouldn't say it's ... https://chrishannah.me/micro/2024-04-26-00-30

@john That's definitely a big factor for me, although it's getting smaller. I'm hoping RCS will remove that issue.

Can you tell when I realised having my RSS feed having every single blog post was a bad problem?

2GB of the outbound transfers was the Inter.ttf file. Needless to say, I've now removed that.

@vincentritter Oh yeah that gets me as well. Also from a developer perspective, imagine working on an app/feature and then having to wait until the next yearly release.

Is it just me that feels a bit bitter when Apple releases (or is about to release) new iPad hardware?
I used to get excited for new iPads. But then I remember iPadOS and go back to my Mac.

chrishannah,
@chrishannah@fosstodon.org avatar

@cliophate I've had similar experiences as well recently. It seems if you want to be excited about technology, then Apple isn't the best place for that at the moment.

@neilgmacy Exactly that.
