Something is either up with me or with new Star Trek, but I have been weirdly on the side of the grumpy captains we aren’t supposed to be siding with lately.

I am a fan of Star Trek Discovery, but even I can admit that some of the writing has always been a bit weak. When it’s good it’s really good, but when it’s not it’s like head scratching bad.

I know this is definitely dreaming too big, but an iPad Pro with two ports would definitely make it a little more “pro.”

As of now, if I have any piece of hardware which can’t be reliably, used through a hub, I can’t do whatever I’m trying to do on my iPad.

Wait. iPadOS 17 supports external cameras but apps have to opt in? And on top of that the system camera app doesn't even support it? Are you fucking kidding me?

I got to season 9 of Stargate and man I do not like Vala so far.

Do you have any kind of organizational scheme for your iCloud Drive folder? Part me wonders if I should have a top level folder I put all of my documents under so my root is just the app directories, downloads, and that.

I basically never want to see the app folders if I don’t have to.

Once or twice my Dad got mad at me growing for spending so much time on the computer and said “are you just gonna spend your whole life on the computer!?”

I can now say confidently that the answer is, yeah, pretty much.

Stargate must have the highest clip show per capita of any show ever put on tv.

If Apple didn’t already have iWork, Final Cut, or Logic, would they make them now? Kind of hard to imagine that kind of investment in new software from them. What even comes close in the last fifteen years?

The guy who makes this lyric writing app, which is basically the app I would make, has been super responsive to my suggestions, going back and forth with me, and is implementing them in really nice ways.

Is this what being a project manager is like? If so, I want in 😂

Turns out it is pretty easy to take an SF Symbol, run it through folderify from Homebrew on the command line, and get something cool like this.

Do you use the feature to sync your Desktop and Documents folders with iCloud in ?

I really imagine myself as the kind of person that would have lots of scripts and Shortcuts, and I'm just kind of not. I run pretty stock.

It’s too bad a lot of the cool Apple Wallet features seem to kind of die on arrival.

I would love to have order tracking automatically in the Wallet app, but considering the Apple Store doesn’t even support it, that feels unlikely.

Having your drivers license in there would be great too, and I don’t blame Apple for this, but I suspect Oregon and a lot of others states are never going to support it. Hope I’m wrong 🤞

Do you use tags in Finder/Files on macOS/iOS? Give me some tips for how to make this useful.

Stargate is still a good show, but it starts to feel a bit tired after Daniel comes back.

Okay, I did it! My language module for writing song lyrics with will detect sections in the format of [Verse 1], [Chorus] etc and let you fold them, and also let you use three dashes at the top to block out metadata like title, key, tempo. Neat.

If anyone is interested, and why would you be, this is what I came up with for organizing songwriting materials.

Thought maybe someone would've written a VSCode extension VSCode for writing lyrics with embedded chords and syllable counting, but, not really. Too bad.

I know what I want from an editor designed for this purpose, which is not much. I just want someone else to have made it already.

The features I need are a way to define sections (verse, chorus), metadata (title, key, etc), syllable count in a gutter, and a way to include chords that don't get counted as syllables and can be hidden.

If you want a Mac assed lyric writing app, this Lyrcs app is it. There's a few things I'd like to see them add (some way to define sections and chords and have them be ignored), but other than that, this is pretty great. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/lyrcs/id1599888045

After some consideration, I've decided to try and make Apple Notes work for my songwriting. It's not perfect, but it does have a lot going for it, and they make it better every year. I wish it had a mode where I could jump between section headers and the tables are very limited, but I can get by.

It's easy enough to switch later if I want to, but for now, I really just don't want to turn into a programming problem. One thing I need to solve is figuring out a good back up strategy.

I sang a song about my friend dying of cancer, and then one about life passing you by the other night, and afterward someone told me my set was “fun.”

Maybe it's because I always make little jokes in between songs? I'm not upset, I'm just not sure how to interpret that 😂

Media literacy should be a required class in high school, like English or math. I am fairly certain there is at least one class we are making kids take that is less valuable.

Okay, this is the folder structure I'm thinking for my songwriting catalog. I'm still a little torn on underscores and date stamps versus just writing everything with capitalization and spaces. The only reason I'm leaning this way is because it's possible I might want to script this at some point.
