We live outside of city gas, so I have a fancy heat pump / propane heating system. It essentially kicks into propane mode when certain outside conditions are hit. For some reason I can never set it right, which results in my house being freezing if it's cold outside, but not cold enough to kick in. Basically it's great when it's in the 20s, but not when it's in the 40s.

It makes me wish things like this had physical knobs rather than displays.

davesnider,
@davesnider@social.davesnider.com avatar

@kamin Unfortunately this isn't the case for me. It controls when the heat comes on, but the actual triggers are tied to a controller near the furnace.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

Netflix "recently added" seems better than previous months. More titles and better quality. Maybe fallout from the Streaming Wars?

davesnider,
@davesnider@social.davesnider.com avatar

@mfinkle The content companies are all under water. They remembered it was easier to license their stuff and collect. Some funny moves though. All the Star Trek movies are on Max right now, and during that tour, aren't on Paramount+, who owns the content.

Years ago I ran mp3.com and we built a data map of who had what. It turned out not to matter cuz everyone used iTunes. Now that same concept has a need. I use justwatch.com and chuckle.

I like criterion. It's the only editorial curation left.

Quick blog post and video about a bookmark service I built over the weekend called Rollerball. The source is on GitHub.

I've become a fan of building tools that allow me to publish to the web directly through my Desktop, in this case through the command line.

Nearly 20 years ago my life changed when a reporter at the NY Times wrote about a DVD collection website I was building. He originally was doing research on why 200 disc players didn't sell. I told him everyone wanted to show off their collection on a shelf, not keep it in a box.

Back then you found out about new tech in a physical newspaper. A month after the story was published I got job offers from Yahoo and CNET. I moved to SF to work on MP3.com.

I love my wife. She wanted me to find some obscure, out of print George Jones albums. I found the mp3s (they fell off a truck, she's happy). She doesn't need physical copies, but is now disappointed I can't find the liner notes. Adorable. The search continues.

Here's a video preview of a tutorial I'm writing up about how to build a Vim / FZF / Xata powered bookmark / personal web tool. Did this quickly in an afternoon.

Code is up here if you want to peep it early. It's native to Fish at the moment, but no reason you can't port it easily to bash.

I'm going through my bookmarks, porting over all ones to a new system. I'd say at least 30% of them 404 or don't exist anymore.

A lot are designers I followed that I'm sure got worried about showing old designs. Usually they just replace their blog with a one-pager.

@davesnider Hey Dave -- I was wondering if your (neo)vim config/setup is available anywhere. Have been lurking around your blog/toots/mentions with @webology and your take seems to line up nicely with mine. I'm about to do a complete audit of my own setup and always love looking for inspiration whenever Ido.

@jacob @webology I need an excuse to make them public and finish off my Lua conversion. Lemme see what I can do!

Every other Friday afternoon I try to find time to stop my actual work and just have fun building something with @xata.

Today I'm going to try and build a Buku replacement for bookmarks. I want to build a little blogroll on my site, but have the data entry be through Vim. I'll have a companion FZF TUI as well.

Over the past year as I've learned more and more engineering (beyond my normal skillset as a designer) I've found so much joy in being able to just build little personal tools I need.

Old World is one of those games that very subtly upends a lot of "known" systems in a genre. It's take on settlements, workers, combat, religion, diplomacy and event chains are a leap forward from Civilization.

The work order system is brilliant. Yes, you have all these workers, soldiers and things you can do, but you only have so many orders, so you need to figure out what you can get to right now.

I'm having a lot of fun with it and can immediately see how I'd play different next game.

davesnider,
@davesnider@social.davesnider.com avatar

Settlements are fixed spots on the map. This means a good strategy (which I learned from the AI) is to "park" your warriors on these finite resources.

This forces you to move your troops away from your city, making expansion a military risk. It also forces wars when others do this to you.

davesnider,
@davesnider@social.davesnider.com avatar

Once founded, workers build up your city. Improvements are multi-leveled. In this city, I had a temple (one from many Gods) and am now training an acolyte to improve it. I'm doing this towards the larger goal of adopting a state religion.

Farms, quarries, mines all work like this. Essentially you're building a professional class beyond normal citizens.

It makes the boring part of Civ games where you're just improving stuff super strategic and involved.

davesnider,
@davesnider@social.davesnider.com avatar

You deal not just with rival nations, but with leaders and even individual families that you need to manage. This makes the political / diplomacy system super chaotic. Leaders die, the wrong child becomes your heir, and there are event chains (similar to Crusader Kings / Paradox) that give you options with risk to try and change things.

Here you can see that Rome is (currently) led by Nero. He's nearby, and I'm trying to play peaceful, so I've tried to become buddies with him.

davesnider,
@davesnider@social.davesnider.com avatar

@acdha Yeah. I just find myself sort of in awe of some of these systems. They make so much sense, and it's surprising the genre didn't adopt them sooner. Civ always felt like a slog to me at a certain point, but I feel like there's always something to do in Old World. Playing peaceful feels super challenging.

davesnider,
@davesnider@social.davesnider.com avatar

I helped Alexander years ago with some gold during an event. Five years later he sends some workers my way to say thanks.

This stuff is nothing you haven't seen already in Paradox games, but it makes the 4x genre so much more engaging.

OK. That's enough gushing over this game. I want to see it become more popular so that the developer keeps trucking. It's currently on sale on Steam.

davesnider,
@davesnider@social.davesnider.com avatar

@acdha Seems like they are doing the Paradox thing with DLC support. Hope it works.

👋 Hi, friends who have landed on Eleventy, preferably from Jekyll.

Are there any growing pains and positive stories you can share?

Is moving from Jekyll templates to Eleventy an apples-to-apples experience, or are they different enough to be a total rewrite?

Also, will an Eleventy created today still work in two, three, or five years, or is keeping up with npm/JS an issue?

davesnider,

@idan @greg @webology

Also +1 to Astro. It's great for content sites, stays simple, but then lets you extend into frameworks when / if you need something fancy.

I like that I don't feel trapped by any specific dogma. You can pick and choose what you need.
