We lost my grandmother today, a wonderful lady and my last living grandparent. 😔

She loved her family and especially any time she got with Noah. We had the privilege of taking him to see her not long ago. I will cherish these memories even more now.

The ninth-gen iPad is on sale for $250 at Walmart and Best Buy. Not new or shiny, but plenty of power for a lot of workflows at an incredible price. I hope it stays in the channel at this discount like the M1 MacBook Air.

I’ve got a little update today for Watch History Journal, my shortcut for logging TV shows and films in your preferred journaling app. In version 1.1:

  • Image Sorter: Title images are added to your journal app in watch order.
  • Adjusted character counts for show and movie titles to allow for longer titles.
  • Revamped time zone logic to work for all regions.

Incredibly often, it seems that Safari fails to load a website. It happens both on my Mac and iPhone and has been happening for a long time. I think this has to do with my WiFi, but I fail to see anything unusual in my Ubiquiti setup.

Anyone seeing similar issues with Safari, or is this some issue in my Internet setup?

(Yes, I've tried disabling all extensions)

Woke up not feeling quite right this morning. Instead of fretting about it for three days like I normally do, I made an appointment with a clinic nearby. A few hours later, I had a preliminary diagnosis, a treatment plan, and a follow-up schedule. Pretty cool.

I recognize that there are a number of reasons going to the doctor isn’t a desirable/feasible option for many, but in this case, I’m thankful it worked out the way it did.

devondundee,
@devondundee@mastodon.social avatar

Follow-up on this: After feeling proud of myself for actually going to the doctor, I was almost immediately reminded why I usually don’t. My health insurance didn’t cover the visit, so I’m on the hook to pay triple what I was led to believe.

The only way to get my insurance to cover a doctor’s visit is to go to my primary care physician (who’s booked for the next three weeks) or to pay the egregious annual deductible.

It’s less health”care” and more health “figure it out yourself.”

devondundee,
@devondundee@mastodon.social avatar

I’m grateful that this unexpected cost isn’t a make-or-break situation for my family, but not everyone is so fortunate. Dealing with a health concern shouldn’t be so fraught and inaccessible.

What am I supposed to do the next time I’m not feeling well? I guess wait three weeks to go to the doctor I can afford, but that doesn’t seem like a good solution.

devondundee,
@devondundee@mastodon.social avatar

I’m sorry to post about this again, but the story keeps getting worse. 😫

That extra cost my insurance wouldn’t cover? The provider double-charged my credit card for it. I caught the error and called them to get it fixed. They directed me to a different company, whose phone system hung up on me every time I called.

devondundee,
@devondundee@mastodon.social avatar

Eventually, I fought my way through the phone tree to a person in another department who gave me a third number to call. Then, I was finally able to confirm the issue and request a refund… a request that was denied because the payment hadn’t “posted” to my account on the provider’s end.

So they can see that they overcharged me but won’t do anything about it unless I call back in a week and start the process over.

devondundee,
@devondundee@mastodon.social avatar

This will all turn out okay in my trivial case. I will get the money back, and it won’t be a huge burden to wait. I’m thankful to have the time, mental bandwidth, and financial cushion to put up with it.

But what about when this happens to people who don’t?

devondundee,
@devondundee@mastodon.social avatar

How many have overpaid for already expensive medical care because they didn’t catch a billing error? Or because their schedules don’t allow them time to make a bunch of calls and wait on hold? What is someone supposed to do when a medical company is withholding money they need to pay their bills today?

This is not okay. People’s lives and livelihoods are at stake, and the system in place is not living up to that responsibility.

I am taking an Excel class this term and I am not sure that I have ever been more humbled. I literally told my advisor that I expected to finish this class in about three days. What I am learning, besides way too much about financial forecasting and amortization, is that I have lived with a very “seventh grade” understanding of Excel and that graduate-level Excel is basically a programming language built on spreadsheets and pain.
