the fact that apparently trying to steal an election gets you 6 years probation (no jail time) but trying to not pay BART fares will get you jail time. Can someone explain how this justice system makes sense?

highly recommend https://phanpy.social as a desktop mastodon client.*

it makes boosts less prominent by grouping them in a carousel, so it's easier to see what people you follow directly are saying.

this makes my timeline much easier to read. i wish base mastodon would do this. i would feel less conflicted boosting stuff if everyone had this. boosts drown out original content on here. phanpy fixes it

*might be good on mobile web too, haven't tried

    Two Bay Area spooky movies to watch:

    • The Fog: Doesn't actually feel that spooky but it's John Carpenter!!
    • Coherence: Pretty spooky and very white culture specific feels. Very Lord of the Flies I mean.

    Can you recommend other horror movies set in Bay Area?

    I appreciate Himal Magazine being truly South Asian and covering the pain of Maldives citizens being forced to live in Malé off the coast, while resorts are being built for tourists.

    TIL about Giraavaru people – Tamizh people who moved to Maldives somewhere between 300BC to 300AD! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giraavaru_people

    OMFG Gavin veto'ed the bill that was sent to him to outlaw caste discrimination and he does so on the weekend? What a crying shame.

    divya,
    @divya@sfba.social avatar

    @deirdrebeth It is not duplicative. Caste is not any of those.

    divya,
    @divya@sfba.social avatar

    @deirdrebeth Because caste is not specific to India. Caste has nothing to do with ancestry as brahmins love to tell everyone. I understand you aren't familiar with it, I would just ask you to believe the Dalits and Indigenous people who are vocal about their oppression in the caste system.

    divya,
    @divya@sfba.social avatar

    @deirdrebeth Also, no caste location can be discerned by DNA.

    Looked up the mansion that the couple escaped from and it’s now called the Robert E Lee building 🤮🤮🤮

    divya,
    @divya@sfba.social avatar

    Omg there is a story here about how a white mob set fire to a building coz they saw a white passing Black Person helping his darker skinned wife and thought it was an interracial couple.

    This book also shows how the “then” democrats did this what about ism about slavery and plodded along until civil war was the only solution. So many parallels to today.

    Also clear from this book there was a lot of support for abolitionists from the working class due to clever and smart Black activists finding common ground in their evaluation of rich people. Everywhere they went to speak, the seats were sold out. So many lies today about how people were “different” then

    divya,
    @divya@sfba.social avatar

    There are at least 3 blockbuster movies in this book. I hope it gets the big cinema treatment it deserves.

    Ready by a rousing depiction of a Boston audience made of all races,riled up by the enhanced Fugitive Slave Act who declared “Constitution or no constitution, law or no law we will not allow a fugitive slave to be taken from Massachusetts”

    Goose bumps. Imagine if we stood like this to all the anti-trans and anti-drag show people who keep issuing bomb threats to libraries.

    If SF had a real media they would be all up in this explosive investigation by the teachers union in sf about how SFUSD squandered money and is now blaming a "teachers shortage" for why it can't better the working conditions of teachers in SF.

    "SFUSD has added 124 high-level administrative positions since the 2009-10 school year. Despite this large increase in administrative staff, the school district’s average daily attendance has remained relatively consistent since the 2009-10 school year, and enrollment has declined.

    These new upper management positions have cost the district $26.4 million annually, which includes the cost of upper management salaries plus benefits. When compared to 12 other similar California school districts, SFUSD spends more and has allocated more staff to central administrative functions.

    SFUSD spent 25 percent of its $977.9 million general operating budget for the 2020-21 financial year on central administrative functions, much higher than the median 18 percent of general operating budget spent on central administrative functions by comparator districts.

    SFUSD’s spending per student for central administrative functions was $4,182 in FY 2020-21, much higher than the comparator districts’ median of $2,853."

    "In one of the most expensive real estate markets in the world, SFUSD management has allowed several properties to languish in vacancy. One of the underutilized properties is currently used as a pumpkin patch. Another underutilized property is a Spanish Revival building downtown currently used for administrative offices. Examining potential plans for these properties alone, we estimate that SFUSD could generate
    anywhere from $9.9 to $14.7 million annually."

    "While some have assumed or suggested that declining enrollment has been due to the district’s handling of the pandemic or a school board that was labeled as incompetent, the data suggest that SanFrancisco families did not actually choose private or charter school alternatives in
    high numbers during the pandemic.

    Instead, the data suggest that enrollment is decreasing due to a declining number of children residing in San Francisco. During the pandemic, there were 17 percent fewer babies born in San Francisco, as well as a 77 percent increase in moves away from San Francisco."

    the country to whom billions of dollars in aid goes. here is what the advisor to their President has to say about people like me and other asians;

    "There is weak intellectual capabilities in these countries"

    it is not surprising to me that Ukraine has failed to build a coalition in the global south and is stuck trying to get aid and money from the white majority countries. This sort of commentary doesn't help.

    divya,
    @divya@sfba.social avatar

    Oh boy this man is apparently an adviser and doesn't seem to be rational. Uses the metaphor of a girl being attacked by 'gopniks' and says only 1 in 100 men will rush to save her. apparently US is a man who is on the sidelines providing arms to the men who are most equipped to save her. Northern Europe apparently are the one in hundred men who rush to save her.

    Next minute, he is saying Russia is the patriarchal society that always had violence and apparently India, china, Turkey all have weak intellectual abilities that do not know how to operate in the "modern world".

    I really hope the Ukrainian president gets a new adviser.
