These U.S. Cities Have More Parking Lots Than Housing - They paved paradise again and again and again.
by Frank Jacobs, Big Think May 17, 2024

"...On average, about one-fifth of all land in city centers is dedicated to parking. But what’s the actual harm being done by all that parking space? For one, city centers that are more “parkable” become less walkable. In other words, fewer things are casually accessible.

...Americans’ attitude toward driving is changing. The share of high school seniors with a driving license has dropped from 85.3% in 1996 to 71.5% in 2015. The rise of shared, multi-modal, and (soon, they keep promising us) autonomous mobility will further reduce the need for driver’s licenses, individual cars, and massive parking facilities in city centers.

Perhaps it’s time for American cities to become denser, more lived-in, more walkable—and less “parkable.”

That's odd. The UK election is being held on the USA's Independence Day, while the US election is being held on the UK's Guy Fawkes Night.

Don’t know if we can draw anything from that, but it's curious...

Funniest thing I've read all day:

"the United States is committed to serving as a model in the international community in promoting and protecting the collective rights of #indigenous peoples as well as the human rights of all individuals."

Imagine a foreign power said they were gonna bulldoze Gettysburg or Arlington Nat'l Cemetary to extract minerals for their economy back home. Told, not asked.

Say the US objected, and the foreign power invited the US to fill out a complaint form explaining why these are traditionally considered "sacred" lands to the local people.

Then the foreign power bulldozed them anyway, offering Americans bulldozing jobs as "mitigation."

This is what the US does to people. TODAY. Every day.

NEW, by me: The check-in computers at several hotels around the U.S. are running a consumer-grade spyware app called pcTattletale.

pcTattletale was seen stealthily and continually capturing screenshots of the hotel booking systems, which contained guest information and reservation details.

This was discovered because a security researcher found a flaw in the spyware is exposing these screenshots to the internet, not just the spyware's intended users.

A favourite at Indie Comix Fests: PORTALPETTAI by Avakkai & Chukka is a portrait of a diverse South Indian community and its resilience in the face of an alien life force intrusion. In the sequel TROUBLE IN PORTALPETTAI, the gang goes to visit the Geargleplex! And in SAMUDRA RANI & THE MAA-LEES, a group of gardener robots are marooned on a distant asteroid, centuries in the future...

“When you put all of these stories together, a clear picture emerges. The Indian government has developed a repertoire of tactics for repressing criticism abroad, and is currently deploying all of them as part of a campaign of intimidation in the United States. Human rights activists, experts, and Indian American community organizers are aware of India’s efforts and speak of its campaign as an everyday concern for themselves and people they know.

Which means it’s probably working.” https://www.vox.com/world-politics/24160779/inside-indias-secret-campaign-to-threaten-and-harass-americans

Christina Cauterucci spent six months digging into the archives in SF and elsewhere to put together a podcast series for Slate’s Slow Burn. It’s about the Briggs Initiative in 1970s California, an anti-gay ballot initiative that would have forced Californians to ban out gay & lesbian teachers from public schools, and fired any pro-gay teachers as well.

Gwenn Craig and Harvey Milk were major players in the anti-Briggs movement, which ended up causing a generation of queers to come out to their friends and families. The Briggs Initiative ended up failing. Three weeks after that election, Dan White assassinated Milk and Mayor George Moscone in City Hall.

This article by Cauterucci is a pretty good explanation of why she felt it was important to tell this story 45 years later.

Dems have passed the reform after years of trying.
