That's from June 2023, FWIW. https://buildr.com/newsletter/6-8-23-chatgpt-finish-this-building/

(I don't believe AI is going away, far from it, but there is certainly a massive bubble and a future that will be littered with dead startups.)

Chat GPT doesn't know how many R's are in "strawberry" and is very persistent and creative in its lies

LLMs (and VLMs) can't count or engage in accurate positioning on the context window. It's being worked on, e.g. just from yesterday: https://arxiv.org/pdf/2405.18719

Yeah - I appreciate Sal's enthusiasm for AI but the combination of the current generation of bots confidently saying nonsense to kids seems ... problematic.

A rare & interesting retrospective from CNN on the historical impact of tetraethyl lead and CFCs, and how known harms were ignored & denied at the time.

It's of course a pattern we see over and over again especially in profit-driven research, and one reason why Andreessen style "technological optimism" that denies or postpones empirical assessment of harm is fundamentally a lethal ideology:

One nice thing I have to sometimes remind myself on the fediverse --

If I see more posts by someone, it's not because an algorithm is trying to optimize my engagement, it's because they happen to be around and active while I am.

Which honestly makes me feel more connected. :)
