The Taylor Swift vinyl retails for $46 and is already going for $150+ on eBay and Discogs. This is why we can’t have nice things (heh) and so against the spirit of Record Store Day.

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

I hate this. It’s so gross. Don’t gouge people on shit like this. The pressing size is good and you could just charge double and still do well! But 3x plus is just greedy.

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@cyanbane yup!! It harms everyone. Like, we don’t have to be greedy. Just b/c you can speculate on something doesn’t mean you have to. FFS.

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@strngwys for a limited edition grey vinyl of something that only had a digital release and is a two vinyl set, that’s standard price!

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@Gartenberg yeah, I picked it up as a pandemic hobby as someone who never had them before (hipster college friends did but I couldn’t be bothered) but I totally agree on the price. For me, I buy stuff from bands/artists I love

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@NerdyBirdie @OrangeAndBlackk hey, I’m not arguing with supply/demand. But it sucks when the whole point of RSD is to get people to local stores and when the gouging is just out of control. I liked it better (pre-pandemic) when we were all just music fans.

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@Gartenberg and I should clarify I had bought one-off records pre-pandemic but really got into during the pandemic

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@sharding yah, I’m the same way tbh. But for Taylor stuff, I know I have to be in early or else. The 1989 pink Record Store Day LP that I got for $65 online b/c my local sold out now regularly goes for $1500+ and is even higher on Discogs

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@jsatk @strngwys oh, I did that. And for Red (Taylor’s version) and for Evermore and Folklore. I got all of the Folklore variants including the Target one and it took months and arrived in this huge package lmao. I do the multiple colors for artists I love b/c I have poor impulse control

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@BodyofBreen @Gartenberg yeah, the used stuff can go for high prices depending on condition and album and where it was pressed. It’s nuts. I’ll admit, a lot of my stuff stays sealed but records are for listening. Just like shoes are for wearing

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@Aaron yah, she bought up machine time so far in advance. She realizes with folklore how hard it would be to do the vinyl for the current demand and started pre-buying machine time. Adele did the same thing for 30, but that didn’t sell as well as expected.

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@strngwys @BodyofBreen @Gartenberg indeed. So few of them are left and of those, even fewer are actually good so everyone is fighting for machine time and whatnot

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@strngwys @BodyofBreen @Gartenberg that’s the part of this I had to learn, what factories are good and what aren’t. Some of the old stuff pre-90s was very high quality but then it all dropped to shit until vinyl almost died and then came back with collectors. Fun rabbit hole to be in, even tho I’m mostly in it for the liner notes and cool colors

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@BodyofBreen @strngwys @Gartenberg I mean, I almost never paid more than $13 for a CD tho, regardless of MSRP. And I abused Columbia House multiple times thanks to my dog (Shadow Warren). Prices DO usually come down but in the case of modern vinyl, a large portion of reissues or even new releases are for fans/collectors and priced as such

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@sirshannon double I can get behind. Like, I’ll pay $110 or whatever if the line is too long today or whatever. But $150-$300 is the range right now and that’s just gouging for gouging same. This is 75,000 copies. It’s not like the 1989 RSD from 2018 that was only 5000 copies for the first release globally.

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@sirshannon my beef is that in the last 3 years, we’ve seen this massive rise in people who will get in line to buy out anything they think will be popular as an arbitrage bid. And look, whatever, it is what it is. Except that the net effect is that people who don’t do this well (people who used to do the line waiting for sneakers and vinyl and consoles and Supreme) now just clog up lines buying stuff they try to resell for too much (usually to no avail), fucking up real supply/demand

Terrible things happening in media today but b/c media people aren’t here (there are exceptions but you all know I’m right. Let’s not even talk about the farce that is journa.host — sorry to my friends on that instance), I doubt it’ll impact my TL on Mastodon much.

Cultural things like this really do make it clear how much this place, as much as I’m enjoying it, is not my home the way the hellsite was.

@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@mergesort fully agree!

film_girl,
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

@chris @dcseifert I really hope that Tumblr adopting ActivityPub can bring more content into this world and make it stickier. My biggest fear has always been that people would leave Twitter but not really migrate anywhere. Like, you can get a Mastodon account but if you never use it, it doesn’t matter. My fear has always been that Twitter’s death will just splinter us or lead to lots of people simply opting out. Sigh.
