floofloof,

Just what Canada needs, more mergers of media companies, more oligopolies, and more news falling into the hands of right-wingers.

Here's why people are being so mean about the Titan going down - CBC (www.cbc.ca)

I have to say I’m not sure what they were hoping for, the discourse hasn’t felt overly mean by internet standards, but maybe that’s just my bubble. I’m sorry they died, but now that we know all the details it’s a bit like the guy that decided to hike up a lava field last year....

floofloof,

Which turned out in fact to be a gift of $413 million dollars obtained through tax dodges.

floofloof,

“Becoming one of these iconic, impactful companies is akin to winning a gold medal in the Olympics. In fact, probably more challenging,” Shafi wrote in the memo, which was full of similarly outlandish analogies. “Like the Olympics, we know most people don’t want to be Olympians. In the same way, not everyone will want to walk the path we are walking. But for those that want to push their limits and find out what they are capable of, this culture is for you."

Translation: work long hours and don’t complain, because I stand to make a lot of money from your labour.

floofloof,

So this really seems to be a press release from the company, not an independently written article.

floofloof,

It’s depressing to see. Unfortunately I’m heavily invested in music software which is not available on Linux. If Microsoft actually does this it could get to the point where even a switch to Apple seems better. But Linux is the only satisfactory and viable solution for actually having control of your machine.

floofloof,

They will have to continue to offer some kind of offline option it seems, for people with flaky internet connections.

floofloof,

Mint is one of the best, yes. I use it on the desktop computer when I don’t need Windows software.

floofloof,

I’m curious about that too. Ableton Live, Studio One and about 1500 VSTs including Arturia’s, Izotope’s and Native Instruments’ stuff are the things keeping me on Windows for my own main PC. It has been a while since I used a Linux DAW. I use Linux more and more for other things now, because I’m not enjoying the feeling of Microsoft owning my computer. It’s a shame because under the hood Windows gets better and better, but they just make the user experience increasingly annoying.

I don’t think they can go full cloud, whatever that would mean, because of all the professionals with professional software that runs on desktop Windows.

floofloof,

The only difference historically is that with Mac you always pay for the OS when you pay for the computer, whereas this is usually but not always the case with Windows for home users. But all software companies are realizing that subscription models effectively hold people’s files to ransom and force them to pay way more than they would for a permanent licence, and Microsoft is getting in on that.

With desktop Linux improving all the time, anyone who doesn’t need Windows-specific software is better off with that.

Cannot subscribe to communities since the v18 update (lemmy.ca)

Since the update to Version 18, I have been unable to subscribe to any communities (local and federated), with the subscribe button simply not appearing. I am using Firefox 114.0.2 with uBlock Origin running. Anyone know what I might do to fix this issue? Thanks!!!...

floofloof,

I have seen this too from time to time. If you use the search function to search for the community, and click through that way, does the subscribe button appear for you then?

floofloof,

Yes, I don’t think it’s browser specific. I use Firefox. Glad it worked for you.

Same users posting same content on all instances

I'm just getting familiar with lemmy fediverse and trying to make my way through it after getting out from reddit. I'm trying out liftoff app for android and I'm seeing way more double posts from different instances from same users. Same content from same users on multiple instances. I thought fediverse supposed to, You post in...

floofloof,

You post from your instance, but the post will appear in the instance that hosts the community you posted to. I’m not seeing these duplicates, but I don’t use the app you’re using - I just use the web interface. Could you give an example of where you see this?

floofloof,

Why would anyone want to move to another functionally similar microblogging site if Twitter still has more users?

Perhaps because the quality of the experience is better, even if the number of users is lower. As Twitter appeals more and more to the far right, those might not be the users people want to be hanging around with.

floofloof,

“Rein”, as in the original. “Wants to reign in AI” has a completely different sense.

floofloof,

Why not go ahead and edit it to follow their edit? It’s a nice feature of Lemmy that you can edit titles after posting (unlike certain other sites!).

floofloof, (edited )

how about raising the alarm before he killed people ?

Like the friend who warned him the hull seemed fragile and advised him to do more testing before allowing passengers onboard, only to be told to “keep your opinions to yourself”? Or the engineers who warned not to use carbon fibre and titanium but whose “rule” he was proud to ignore, or his executive who warned him about the implosion risk and demanded regular tests for wear and who sued him after being fired for it, or the three dozen experts who signed an open letter to him warning his sub was unsafe?

He had no shortage of warnings, but seems to have made it a point of pride to ignore them.

floofloof,

The OceanGate CEO … once explained how he didn’t hire “50-year-old white guys” with military experience to captain his vessels because they weren’t “inspirational.”

Stockton Rush, 61, added that such expertise was unnecessary because “anybody can drive the sub” with a $30 video game controller.

Each thing that comes out about this guy makes him look a little worse.

floofloof,

That has been the great thing about it, rediscovering that people can talk to strangers on the internet and actually be normal about it. Conversations here don’t seem to devolve into fights as they invariably do on mainstream social sites. And I don’t have to keep explaining to people that it’s possible to care about other people, a concept which several people on Reddit told me was incomprehensible to them.

floofloof,

It counterintuitive to most people I expect. Shutdown sounds like the more drastic option, the one that should be guaranteed to reset everything. And it used to be. But in recent versions of Windows, Restart is the one that resets everything, and Shutdown doesn’t properly shut it down.

floofloof,

Does this mean lemmy.ca is now defederated from lemmy.world, lemmy.ml and beehaw.org, among others? These all have more than 10,000 users.

floofloof,

Reddit is not the only corporation that would have an interest in torpedoing the Fediverse before it becomes a real competitor.
