@zachleat switching a side project to 11ty and holy smokes is it significantly better to make a site than the last time I started from scratch.

The Art of Noise exhibition at SF MOMA is fun and you should go

@constantine yeah I finally got my mitts on that thing in the SF Moma store and it’s so well made

@mia “you can’t make a world wide web by saying it works on my machine and everyone else is an edge case" is gonna haunt me for the rest of my days btw

(Also, super great talk!)

Made some notes about designing @csscade. It was weirdly…hard? But also fun. But mostly hard. https://robinrendle.com/notes/designing-the-cascade/

Man remember when websites were fun and punk and weird?

Wrote a few quick notes about lightness in publishing and workin’ on @csscade this week: https://buttondown.email/robinrendle/archive/lightness-in-publishing/

Last night I secretly/quietly hit the publish button on a new version of The Cascade I’ve been workin’ on all week. It’s a fresh new blog about the past, present, and future of CSS: https://www.csscade.com/

I reckon next next week I’m gonna make The Cascade into a separate (but simple) website and polish things up. Sounds like folks are enjoying it quite a bit!

Also I kinda feel like we’ve gone over the hump of newsletters and everyone’s decided that actually blogs are good.

Aw beans, your boy blogged about design systems again but this time he’s the problem https://robinrendle.com/notes/the-other-side/

Consistently @fonts is one of my favorite front-end writers, always exploring interesting ideas. Makes me happy when a new essay comes up in my feed.

You should consider subscribing to the site RSS, or The Cascade newsletter, or both.

@mia gah! You’re far too kind, Miriam!

Here’s a fun little mini-manifesto about my frustrations with the web in 2024, Hypercard, and why making things on the https://robinrendle.comeeling in the world: https://robinrendle.com

@fonts@sfba.social avatar

I haven’t done much front-end work for a while but god all search results for CSS questions are now just pure junk, chocked full of Medium thinkicles and confusing Reddit threads that lead me in the wrong direction. There is an enormous CSS-Tricks shaped hole in the internet now.

Happy to announce that I’ve been bought by Monotype! My face, body, and soul cannot wait to merge with the soft warm embrace of every font ever made.

A writing tip for myself in the future: delete every use of “…for me…,” “in my opinion,” “some might disagree,” “I think,” etc. etc. All of these make your writing frail and cowardly, absent of any self-confidence. You can have opinions without apologizing for them! Jeez!

Ok the latest idea I am kicking around re finding a Substack alternative: a website built with @eleventy or WordPress, with email subscription via @buttondown API. I saw something like this at Robin Rendle’s site @fonts. He hosts a newsletter called The Cascade (https://robinrendle.com/the-cascade/), which is hosted on his site and then sent out via email using Buttondown. I don’t yet know if that is automated (site -> BD via api) or a manual copy and paste job?

fonts,
@fonts@sfba.social avatar

@ricmac @eleventy @buttondown my other newsletters are using Buttondown’s RSS feature but I’m doing everything manually here for now! Would highly recommend doing it that way tho since you just need to put the feed link into BD

Everyone stop what you’re doing and go play Jusant. If you remotely liked Journey then you’ll love this.

If you don’t blog about stuff you love then did you really love it? https://robinrendle.com/notes/jusant/
