This quote is really it. This is also exactly what motivates me to work on understanding our social systems. Engineers ๐Ÿค Social scientists

grgml,

@grimalkina great quote! Sadly it's an attitude that you rarely see in the practice of most actually-existing engineers. From my experience, and from what i've read, most engineers tend to develop rather conservative instincts of the variety "if it works don't fix it", while also disregarding any social/ethical/political critique or counternarrative as being "outside their domain"

grgml,

@grimalkina well, in a paper i've some time ago they attributed this attitude to their professional socialization, a process during which they were "taught" (not always explicitly, mostly by examples or associations, i.e. ideologically) that their profession was about technical know-how and not about critical questions. The recommendation was to enrich the curricula with topics that could expose them to other ways of thinking and link the technical part with the ethical and social dimension.

grgml,

@grimalkina apart from that we can speculate:

  • favorable prospects of employment and well paid jobs may imbue them with the idea of the "self-made" successful individual, quick to scorn disadvantaged people for "not working hard enough"
  • the inherent discreetness of the field (no maybe, either true or false, 1/0, it works/it does not) may make one hostile to alternative, non-intuitive narratives, that challenge the way things are
  • not reading enough literature may exacerbate the above effects

Open Source Conference Albania (mostly known as OSCAL) has a brand-new website for the edition - organised by @OpenLabsAlbania https://oscal.openlabs.cc/.

Thanks ๐Ÿ™ for the hard work @grgml @kristicunga and other organizing team members for making this happen in such a short time. You rock \m/

Why is every link i click broken? Did i miss something?

grgml,

I don't have an account so not sure what logged in users see or what is happening in the app, but i get a "page not available" message for every account, even celebrity ones which are supposed to be public

grgml, to random

I really like mastodon, but what i miss about twitter are the euro-leftist academics who do not succumb to emotional/moralistic reactions like woke americans (and the americanized european counterparts) do on the first trigger. Sorry to say that folks, but you have to take the propaganda with a grain of salt

Imagine living in a country where election result are like this poll. No more lesser-evil voting

Did you know that hosts its own server and you can join with your account? (i didn't, and i'm happy to have found out) There goes the quandary of "picking a server"

grgml,

Ofc i would have preferred to be on our local instance at @OpenLabsAlbania if our infra guys had managed to properly set up encryption and didn't shut it down ๐Ÿ˜ข

One of the things that puzzle me the most about our industry is why devs keep choosing React over Vue.

Itโ€™s bloated, produces poor UX, makes bigger demands on tooling, respects web standards less, and has significantly poorer DXโ€ฆ

Is it just ecosystem? But then how did it get there?
Is it because it came out of Facebook?
Is it because some of the frameworks around it actually have good DX?
Something else?

I โ€ฆdonโ€™t get it. ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿฝโ€โ™€๏ธ

See also, @slightlyoffโ€™s controversial post: https://infrequently.org/2023/02/the-market-for-lemons/

grgml,

@leaverou @slightlyoff always prefered vue over react, maybe because of the html-like syntax, but mostly because of vibes, it was the indy alternative vs the facebook-backed react or google-backed angular. But after 1 year or so i had to switch to react because of management decisions. Their reasoning was that it's easier to find devs for react, and trusted facebook for long-term support. It boils down to network effect i guess, everybody is using react, so let's do the same.

This Friday at @OpenLabsAlbania we're having a little workshop on building a simple website with and deploying it with Gitlab Pages. It will cover fundamentals and good web practices, and we're going to follow it with other workshops where we go more in depth into 11ty, web development and hopefully create an community in Tirana.

Can ActivityPub save the internet?
