irfan, to Youtube

I've been meaning to cut down my power usage without disrupting my lifestyle too much, the first thought is for me to "decommission" my HTPC which I keep running all day, asleep at best, just so it's ready for me when I want to sleep and need it to watch #YouTube (so I can get to sleep lol).

The "easiest" replacement is get an #ARM based computer to take over its job. My first thought it should run on #Linux just bcos I'm most familiar with it and it's an open ecosystem so I should be able to do a ton of things w it - but I only have a Pi 4 and that thing honestly sucks at streaming so nope. Tried #LineageOS on it to get it running #Android TV and while at first it seemed great, it ended up being quite a hassle and a mess so I ditched that.

Then my dad asked me to get an Android TV box/stick for his TV, and I got him the #Xiaomi Mi Box S (2nd gen). After I set it up and used it for a bit, I honestly kinda liked it. Tried #Plex, #Netflix, #PrimeVideo, etc. and they all ran great. The only downside I thought to this option is that I won't be able to watch YouTube with adblockers like I could with something like #Firefox on a desktop.

THEN I quickly discovered the existence of #SmartTube and GOD what a lifesaver it's been. It works just like the official YouTube client with all the pages and algos you're familiar with when you've authenticated, it blocks YouTube ads, but also it supports #SponsorBlock right out of the box without needing to self-host or wtv so it could even block sponsor segments in video if you want. Even has some nice accessibility options too like changing the subtitle colours, size, and positioning which is great for me who watches vids in bed w no audio.

This rant ended up being very long unnecessarily lol but all in all, that removed the only dealbreaker for me on getting and using said TV box for myself - so I did and have been using for abt a week now. The box turns itself and my TV off automatically after 30 mins of inactivity and I can easily turn the box and the TV back on using just my remote which is nice. Idek what'd I need the HTPC for anymore honestly since I already have a #SteamDeck to take over its job gaming wise much, much earlier.

Sometimes I need to watch a video on youtube.

Even if I quickly go fullscreen, there's enough time to be enticed by the algorithmically-addictive video on the side menu.

What browser magic can I most simply implement to hide the side menu?

I keep looking at rust and thinking "Gods it seems to be an awesome language"... Then I read and hear about a lot of hassels moving from C or C++ to rust and never really any massive success stories... are the massive success stories out there?

krans,
@krans@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@looopTools is a massive success story for Rust. After multiple attempts to write a multi threaded style engine in C++, and getting completely destroyed by data races on each attempt, funded Rust , and then used it to write a high performance multi threaded styling engine () with no crashes or data races on basically the first attempt.

Giving the Waterfox browser a try. I like Firefox but it seems to be starting to get a little bloaty, and I want to continue using a browser that’s not Chromium based. Waterfox is basically an even more privacy-oriented fork of Mozilla’s Gecko, but not to the point of breaking the web like some highly privacy-oriented browsers might.

After importing all my bookmarks and settings, installing my usual extensions, and even recreating my custom theme in Firefox Color, Waterfox is visually identical to my Firefox experience, just minus the analytical tracking in the background. And I have full access to Firefox extensions and themes. Using Waterfox from here on out seems like an easy decision. It even has some features that Firefox doesn’t.

Firefox users, is there any way to search youtube in the address bar? In Chrome I just type "you" and hit tab and it goes into a search right in the bar. Same for some other sites.

@AAMfP @k9mail @thunderbird Interesting offer by . Just tried in on my pc and it failed with "Action not permitted" when trying to download the files (I guess). I would also much prefer to upload my own CSR that I generated outside of the browser. BTW, in Germany enables you to sign your PGP/GPG key by an official authority for free. OMG. Firefox User kept 7.4k tabs open for more than 24 months 😱 the browser's ability to handle extreme tab hoarding is amazing 🤩 https://x.com/sodiumpen/status/1785152049811730943?s=46

PS : et man:groff explique Groff (utilisé par man ;-) )

This... not only doesn't seem right, but seems like it shouldn't be possible. A disabled extension is still running in Firefox.

toggling the enabled toggle back on and off again made it actually be disabled but... I'm thinking there's a bug in FF where under certain circumstances a disabled plugin can actually be running and you wouldn't know unless you had it pinned (and thus visible). This seems like a security issue.

Does anyone else have issues with #Firefox acting odd in #KDE #Plasma in terms of focus and window management?

It will not want to get focus at random times, and I'll have to click on another window and back in firefox for it to become active. In these occasions, clicking within firefox doesn't do anything.

Odd.

I know nobody cares, but I've made some dramatic (and personally very satisfying) layout improvements to #FingerMaze

https://dropthemath.oblomov.eu/fm/

There's even a short built-in help system if you click on the input method icons on the top right, that works almost as intended except for this #Firefox missing feature:

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1856460

I think the next step is probably an “options” system to plug in the “hamburger” menu in the top left.

#Firefox #WebBrowsers: "A software engineer has been keeping nearly 7,500 Firefox tabs open on her Mac computer for over two years—and doesn't plan on closing them anytime soon.

Firefox power user Hazel, who prefers not to give her last name, posted a screenshot showing 7,470 tabs open earlier this week after finding the browser initially unable to restore all the tabs. Hazel was able to bring the tabs back to life via a Firefox profile cache, however, and tells PCMag that reloading the full session took "no more than a minute."

"I feel like a part of me is restored," Hazel wrote on X once the Firefox tabs had returned.

The Firefox fan tells PCMag in a message that she keeps so many tabs open for nostalgia reasons. "I like to scroll back and see clusters of tabs from months ago—it's like a trip down memory lane on whatever I was doing/learning about/thinking about," she says.

Surprisingly, all those tabs haven't impacted the computer's performance. "Firefox is quite memory efficient and isn't actually loading the websites unless I click on the tab—so it's not very resource intensive," Hazel says."
