We are experiencing the Canadian wildfire smoke today, much stronger than several weeks ago. The sky still looks mostly normal gray, but I smell it. I bet the sun would be orange if I could see it. I joke with my coworkers as a former resident of San Diego that it’s not bad unless it’s raining ash, but this is definitely n95 all the time territory.

YMMV on this because I don’t know how much my opinions generalize, but I’ve been reading a bunch of resumes and have some thoughts:

  • Say what you’re looking for at the top of your resume or in a cover letter. If the position is for a generalist and your background is e.g. research heavy, tell me if you can do other things, or if you even want to!

  • Same goes for career switchers. Are you a scrum master who wants to do UX now, or did you just not read the job description?
  • Write like I have the attention span of a squirrel. Reviewing resumes isn’t my main job and it’s boring so my will to pay attention is low.
  • Relatedly, cramming every sentence with keywords makes it hard to read. I know you need to get past keyword filters sometimes, but please write for humans too!

  • Link to your portfolio from your resume, or at least on your LinkedIn! Use a real link, and make sure the link is correct!
  • I won’t penalize you for not having a portfolio, but if you don’t your resume has to be extra clear about what you can or can’t do, your process, who you work with…

  • This one has gotten better over the last few years, but for the most part the final product is the least interesting part of your portfolio. Tell me how you got there! What was the problem, who else was on the team and what did you do vs what they did, what was your process, why did you make your design decisions, did you iterate on the solution, what do you wish had gone differently…

Tempering previous enthusiasm about cover letters, 2.5 pages closely typed in a small font is too much cover letter; I want to know why your special circumstances make you a good fit, but succinctly
