EA is looking at putting in-game ads in AAA games — 'We'll be very thoughtful as we move into that,' says CEO (www.tomshardware.com)

EA CEO Andrew Wilson confirmed the company is considering putting ads in traditional AAA games — titles that players purchase up-front for around $70 apiece. In the Q&A part of EA’s latest earnings call, Eric Sheridan from Goldman Sachs asked Wilson about dynamic ad insertion in traditional AAA games. Wilson said,...

haui_lemmy,

The review bombings have helped before. Probably everyone has an ea game in their library. Lets give it a go.

haui_lemmy,

Vote with your wallet has no impact whatsoever. It assumes people around you were informed, had similar opinions and the discipline you have. Not saying buy their games or stop voting but experience shows that its not enough for this particular problem.

haui_lemmy,

Not at all. Voting means going to a voting booth or mailing your vote. What you are asking is that people go against their impulses and overpower tons of marketing efforts and in many cases dark patterns that keep people addicted.

Declaring them as equal shows lack of understanding of how advanced marketing is today. They literally employ psychologists to influence people.

haui_lemmy,

As much as I understand this, human nature ist much different. The vast majority of people doesnt care about this, doesnt know about this or doesnt prioritize it.

Think the mother/father who works full time and has to handle parenthood in their off time. It not like they have the time to stay on top of gaming trends. They will probably scan the game for violence if at all.

Do you think the manority of twitch and youtube viewers are kids for nothing? People are used to this and they dont mind.

Your logic with the entertainmend product also has nothing to do with predatory marketing and dark patterns. They’re illegal in some states for a reason.

haui_lemmy,

NC seems to either work completely or it doesnt, barely an inbetween there.

Its fine for me for two years and going. But I only have two users and maybe 200 GB of data. My 16 gigs of ram barely goes above 20%, my 4 thread oldschool xeon usually stays at <5% usage.

Doing sysadmin stuff for 20 yrs probably helps though.

haui_lemmy,

20 yrs of experience rarely makes things worse I guess.

Professor sues Meta to allow release of feed-killing tool for Facebook (arstechnica.com)

The tool is nearly ready to be released, Zuckerman told Ars, but the University of Massachusetts Amherst associate professor is afraid that Facebook owner Meta might threaten legal action if he goes ahead. And his fears appear well-founded. In 2021, Meta sent a cease-and-desist letter to the creator of the original Unfollow...

haui_lemmy,

Probably but thats not the issue. The issue is mass influx of badly moderated and likely, eventually ad ridden content. They can totally read all my stuff. I dont want them to push their shit on my server and I dont want them to gain power over my feed. What would happen if I defederated lemmy.world tomorrow? Exactly, my feed would be 75% shorter because most stuff is on there. With meta, world is suddenly 10% of the feed and meta is 90.

haui_lemmy,

Because thats how the world works. People lie and studies shown that big corporations act like psychopaths. You will never get rid of this thing. Also, everyone in the whole world can just read your content off every fediverse server your server federates to, manually or through scraping. It literally is a nonissue if they made an undercover instance because they can read it everywhere.

But that is also the idea. If your message can be gotten everywhere, nobody can artificially ransom them for money (looking at you, reddit, stack overflow, facebook, twitter, etc).

This fact is rarely discussed but a major factor why the fediverse helps with democratization of the internet. Free information.

haui_lemmy,

I’m pro-fediverse, that’s why I think it’s just as bad.

We probably mean the same but look at it through different lenses. I also want the fediverse to succeed. Therefore I host 4 fediverse instances.

But you have to understand that keeping anyone (especially tech companies with tons of knowledge) from reading this stuff is 1. impossible and 2. against the freedom idea of the fediverse.

There is one instance in particular, that has the vast majority of Lemmy

That would be world

not being able to let people know that I’ve noticed them being curated

And why is that a problem? You cant keep people in **** from being shot either and we‘re not making a fuss about it from what I can tell. I suggest we focus on the things we can while we can. Otherwise we wont get the stuff done that we actually have the power and influence for.

I think corporations taking over one of the big instances would be subtle and will have terrible consequences for the fediverse.

Again, something you cant influence. I defederated meta and will defederate anyone else who pushes ads or other shit content. If other admins do the same we will automatically separate from shit content.

Be the change you want to see and either make your own instance or donate to the one you’re on. Also, tell others the same thing and we will get to a better place guaranteed. The system of the fediverse is already great because its democratic. Our only enemy is i fighting.

haui_lemmy,

You could always start suing the US government for allowing shareholder primacy in the first place. Stakeholder primacy is the way to go and everyone knows that. Everyone besides corporate knuckleheads.

haui_lemmy,

I never said you sue the stakeholders. They could sue the government for allowing this shit in the first place.

Stakeholder primacy is just the opposition of shareholder primacy essentially. Stakeholders are the employees, the community/society around the company like the town or city it is in. As in they have obligation to care for that.

haui_lemmy,

This explains it well. Shareholder primacy isnt that old even. Stakeholder primacy used to be the norm and according to this article should also be the future goal.

So yes, this works very well and has so in the past. The current model of infinite growth is unsustainable both physically and environmentally.

haui_lemmy,

Thanks for elaborating. Learn something new every day. :)

I use pop os extensively so I knew about that but the government/security stuff was interesting. The main reason I went away from ubuntu was snap and pop is very useful.

Microsoft says it needs games like Hi-Fi Rush the day after killing its studio (www.theverge.com)

Today, one day after Microsoft announced that it would shut down four of its games studios, Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, held a town hall to discuss the division’s future goals. “We need smaller games that give us prestige and awards,” Booty told employees, according to internal remarks shared with The Verge....

haui_lemmy,

OOF

I didnt know that. So from „young inventor in a garage“ to „privileged child gets everything in life because money“. Thats sad man.

haui_lemmy,

I‘m sure you mean well but your link does not work to substantiate your claim. Can you cite or link to a specific part of the document? Assuming its not my phone thats making trouble. In that case I apologize.

haui_lemmy,

All because his mother was on the board of directors? Now I understand why he wont give away his fortune. He isnt the saint everybody thinks he is. Its all marketing.

haui_lemmy,

Yeah. Try to tell that to anyone who is in that TV-watching-bubble. I have problems even conveying that musk is not a saint.

haui_lemmy,

Great to hear it. Imo, they have no incentive of doing so. If a country decided that sale of open source hard and software was tax free or at least reduced, we would be seeing it multiply like rabbits.

haui_lemmy,

Simple answer: people vs corporations. A dev or homelabber getting help from you is very different from a company making billions just by mass shoveling your knowledge to the highest bidder.

The reason we need this as a fediverse service is that everyone can take in this knowledge and one corp doesnt have the ability to sell it. Thats what the worth comes from. Someone holding they key to it.

haui_lemmy,

Maybe similar to Reddit they restricted access to the data so they could sell it to AI companies.

Which would be a way to circumvent cc by sa.

haui_lemmy,

If we only were allowed to do anything else than prepare for work (school), work and prepare for death (retirement for normal people).

But obviously the people need cheap toys that break asap so they can buy new cheap toys and we need to produce, sell, transport and plan them.

I don't know anything about Linux and the idea of installing it frightens me. Where do I start?

I bought a laptop yesterday, it came pre-installed with Windows 11. I hate win 11 so I switched it down to Windows 10, but then started considering using Linux for total control over the laptop, but here’s the thing: I keep seeing memes about how complicated or fucky wucky Linux is to install and run. I love the idea of open...

haui_lemmy,

I highly appreciate you asking for feedback and acknowledge a possible opportunity for growth. Very rare, doubly so on the internet imo.

The intention you use something with - sadly - does not communicate over written text well. If you use common derogatory language in a „funny“ way doesnt change that it is derogatory. Think calling a black person the n word or a woman the b word but „meaning it funny“.

The word turbo nerd is exceptionally derogatory and akin to making fun of disabled people.

screaming at themselves or cursing can be a sign of tourette, the IT world has a very high rate of autistic people and hearing them scream can be a sign of a meltdown. Thats not something to make fun about.

In any case it never is your business to make fun of someone except the person gives consent (ie is a friend who is cool with being treated that way or does the same with you). Taking away people‘s agency that way is indeed what can lead to horrible outcomes. Just dont do it. You can be funny in a different way.

haui_lemmy,

Listen mate, please read before you assume. I cited a source because thats what you do when you claim stuff so I did.

Using degrading language isnt okay and neither is trying to dismiss someone explaining it because its „not representative of the common view“. I never said it was.

I was explaining how I made the conclusion. No reason for you to jump to their defence. I was explaining. Have a good one.

haui_lemmy,

Exactly. Just that I didnt assume that he meant anything. I‘m not going off of any ideas of others‘ minds as I cant know what goes on in there. I‘m talking about a common interpretation which people will follow if no other context is provided.
