haui_lemmy,

I use pop for my nvidia laptop and it works great. System76 seems to be on the right track and I‘m curious what they have in store for the future.

haui_lemmy,

I dont understand why they didnt. Debian with gnome is essentially the same imo.

haui_lemmy,

And tuxedo. Depending on your country.

haui_lemmy,

Funny. I‘m using it on an asus a15 and its rocksolid so far. Sorry you made that experience though.

Microsoft says it needs games like Hi-Fi Rush the day after killing its studio (www.theverge.com)

Today, one day after Microsoft announced that it would shut down four of its games studios, Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, held a town hall to discuss the division’s future goals. “We need smaller games that give us prestige and awards,” Booty told employees, according to internal remarks shared with The Verge....

haui_lemmy,

The reason these companies are successful is anti competitive behavior and money, not genius. Granted, gates did good when he invented a universally adopted OS but since then, they’re just using their power to bully themselves to more money.

They desperately need to be broken up and I wonder when the rest of the world will come to that conclusion. I hope it happens before we get „privatized government“.

People defending megacorporations of any kind should be ashamed of themselves.

haui_lemmy,

OOF

I didnt know that. So from „young inventor in a garage“ to „privileged child gets everything in life because money“. Thats sad man.

haui_lemmy,

I‘m sure you mean well but your link does not work to substantiate your claim. Can you cite or link to a specific part of the document? Assuming its not my phone thats making trouble. In that case I apologize.

haui_lemmy,

People will bully and right out assault you for it but yes, thats pretty much my life motto.

Improving things starts with seeing and speaking no matter how many folks really dont want to hear it.

haui_lemmy,

Interesting article. About matches my experience with forking mastodon.

I don't know anything about Linux and the idea of installing it frightens me. Where do I start?

I bought a laptop yesterday, it came pre-installed with Windows 11. I hate win 11 so I switched it down to Windows 10, but then started considering using Linux for total control over the laptop, but here’s the thing: I keep seeing memes about how complicated or fucky wucky Linux is to install and run. I love the idea of open...

haui_lemmy,

Dont install it, yet. Make a bootable usb stick with balena etcher and put a linux distro on it (I highly recommend mint, pop_os or ubuntu (standard version) as ISO on it.

Ubuntu is very controversial in the more advanced sphere but I learned on it and its great for beginners.

If you want to go a little bit over the top download ventoy and put it on the usb instead. You can then put as many ISOs on there as you can fit and just select one of them at boot.

The most important part for beginners is the desktop environment anyway so gnome should be fine. If you have tried it for more than an hour and still feel like this could be fun, click install and give it a go.

You could also dual boot but windows might fuck you over since they‘re not great neighbors as an OS.

Feel free to ask if you want to know more. Good luck.

haui_lemmy,

In fact, I dont use ubuntu on my desktop anymore because of their snap craze. I also think talking down to people shows lack of character btw. Have a good one anyway.

haui_lemmy,

In fact I used ubuntu until version 23.10 iirc so no, its not an outdated recommendation. Actually I still use it on my servers because it doesnt need a desktop there and I‘m not changing OSs unless I have to. 22.04 is still perfectly fine on there.

The issue with power users (I‘m an admin myself) is that we‘re used to being in control and some new OS feels weird as we might get stuck for a bit. Not everyone likes to deal with that.

Still valid opinion I think. Have a good one.

Best Graphic card for Linux Gaming (lemmy.wtf)

Are they some graphic card benchmark for linux environment ? From my windows experience, drivers are important, and often underestimate. My linux gaming experience is very bad, lots of my game are unstable, and others use a lot more resources than with windows. However, when I ask people, some of them have no issue at all, even...

haui_lemmy,

I play on debian stable with steam. Its playable but debian is so far behind on packages that it makes no sense if you‘re sensitive to differences in fps or want peak performance.

Especially if you‘re using an nvidia card its definitely less fun on debian. I made good experiences with pop!os.

If you compare framerates I suggest windows though since linux users usually want a functional, privacy friendly OS which allows them to own their hardware and then comes peak game performance. If trash OS and privacy invasion is cool for you, go for it.

Not saying the performance on average isnt on par but the games are just not made for linux and its not „dead easy“ in every game yet.

haui_lemmy,

That works for a lot of companies. Founding a company and making it successful is insanely hard (experience). Pulling it off alone is near herculean and a lot of folks I met who had partners were coopted by them later. Its as if the drive and the knowledge required for it usually dont exist in one person.

haui_lemmy,

Have you tried installing literally any debian based system recently? Works without a single command.

haui_lemmy,

Fair enough. Although technically the system works without that. Just not for long maybe?

haui_lemmy,

Yeah no. Thats not the case for everyone. Debian itself also is a little more tricky than say pop!os.

haui_lemmy,

I think the purists need to accept that users are valid too. :) good that some distros seem to understand that.

haui_lemmy,

Oof. So you need a recovery email that is not easily traceable if you need one at all. Thats tough.

haui_lemmy,

Absolutely. Either that or the person was literally born yesterday.

haui_lemmy,

So now we need fedi-stackoverflow. Yo @dessalines any chance you guys have something in store? :)

haui_lemmy,

The work you folks do is incredible. That said, the specialization of SO was quite unique: you need to ask questions to be able to answer them and you have to work your way up while being coached how to achieve it. I‘m sure you know that.

It keeps opinions at bay due to the strong focus on the context. Lemmy has a completely different purpose, more social, imo. Thats fine but it would need to be tailored to favor less answers in higher quality. Probably a reskin with a little added restrictions and logic? I can see how that would work.

haui_lemmy,

Damn this community is getting really toxic. Instead of addressing the huge elephant in the room (people getting jack shit for building great things and their labor being stolen by profit seeking entities), lets jump on the people who are trying to do something about it.

I think the idea of maintainers getting a kickback from downstream profits is a great thing and hugely better than normal foss.

P.S.: a system where you can just relicense the work of contributors with a CLA and profit off of them is not an inch better than this.
