Abiotic Factor has been really fun so far. At first I thought it might be too scary, but it's silly enough that it's really enjoyable. I've been playing it with two others.

I'm honestly really surprised how much people like . I did end up buying/playing it because I love the survival/crafting genre. And, there were some fun moments with defeating some of the bosses with friends. But the game feels really shallow to me. The crafting/building aspect is pretty meh. Even the pal management aspect is not deep enough to be a fun aspect of the game. Maybe because I never had a pokemon phase. I don't know.

I think if at the least there was a little more depth to the pal management part, like some colony management games, or a better priority system, it could be good gameplay wise.

The building aspect was super basic, like "game dev's first survival game" type of basic. Very clunky at this point and your pals can easily get stuck on objects/stairs. TBH, I don't really see the point of base building, maybe for higher level areas it's more of a necessity due to the raids.

@BeAware Yeah. In my opinion, "flesh it out" would mean a complete overhaul of those systems, but yeah. That could happen.

@BeAware Oh, I've played a lot of early access games, I know what I'm in for. I think it's also the best time to criticize them. If not for their sake to course correct, but for others wondering if they should dish out the money on them.

I'm really curious how they plan on enforcing this. Are they implementing personal loot like on retail? Are they going to rely on people reporting? In that case, do you wait until you join a raid, lose out on an item that drops, then report them for doing a GDKP group?

"We are experimenting with a new policy which will no longer allow GDKP runs in Season of Discovery."

🧵 Going to start a little thread of games I'm looking forward to this year that are ALLEDGEDLY going to be playable in some state (including early access/alpha). I typically go for and Maybe I'll be able to revisit this later and see which ones actually came out or that I was able to try!

Enshrouded is a survival/crafting co-op (16 players). I'm excited about the voxel building. It reminds me of Everquest Landmark (RIP). It also reminds me of a more magic-ey Valheim (which I also enjoyed) This video pretty much sold me on it because I love being able to do detailed builds in these types of games.

Pax Dei is (fingers crossed!) going into early access this spring. with heavy crafting, trade, economy, town building. I feel a little skeptical about this one, though I do hope it comes to fruition. My problem with games that are too sandbox-ey is that, to me, it feels like there is nothing to do especially if the server population dwindles. What they're making looks really ambitious and I hope it pans out!

Ashes of Creation is another sort-of sandbox-ey MMO with trade, economy and town building plus dungeons, raids, etc. This one looks a little more high fantasy. It also looks a little further along based on the Twitch streams they've done with their developers. They should have a playable alpha (which you can buy into) this year. I've been really looking forward to this one and happy to see they don't seem to be rushing it.

@BeAware Yeah, the 7 years doesn't surprise me since they started as a REALLY small team. And I agree. I have a lot of MMOs I bounce around to, but what they're promising would really shake up the space if they can deliver it.

Having some serious nostalgiafeels lately, after seeing a random screenshot yesterday somewhere.

Wish ActiBlizz hadn't become increasingly shitty ethically over the years; I used to have a reliable on-again-off-again relationship with , but the various controversies of 2018-2019 meant my already-off-again phase became permanent.

OTOH, since I've mostly abandoned M&K gaming for RSI reasons, I dunno if I'd even be /able/ to play an MMO now 😩

@bitprophet I wonder since Microsoft has recognized a union earlier this year for one of it's other gaming studios they own if it bodes better for their workers now that they've been acquired. I hope at least :|

There are some interesting comments here from Dan Olson in the opening statements from this panel about how this BlizzCon announcement all around felt like it didn't sell the expansions and that even the production behind it (like the branding around the halls in the conference) wasn't as up to par with previous BlizzCons. Working in "big tech" right now, I know everyone is being forced to do the same but with even less and I wonder if that's related. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ng71xI3BGjg

I have to think that Blizzard employees are feeling the same pressure that so many of us across the industry are feeling (not just gaming, but software in general) especially at larger companies. We're all dealing with layoffs, with losing our most senior engineers, and the goals list for the year never gets smaller.

@jimmyb I keep having this scenario happen where I'll absolutely get decimated, then try again and not even realize I am about to win because I'm so focused on minions on the lower half of the map. Like the victory screen pops up and I'm like "oh, ok, I guess I won"

@jimmyb I think I'm still fairly early in, in Duskwood (like 12 sigil levels or w/e they are)
