This is very strange, I can still see many of the posts from the community at various URLs, especially from viewing your account page. But the community itself isn’t showing any posts when you view it directly.

The Wee Free Men? I need to read more Terry Pratchet honestly, I remember reading that book as a kid and it was amazing.

If the inventor was known to be hubristic and reckless, it could be poetic justice. Otherwise, I think ironic is the best descriptor.

Btw, here’s a historical example of this happening.

Cool!

There was an instance at lemmy.beyondcombustion.net in the first few months following the API exodus, but it went down at some point. I presume the admin lost interest/motivation.

That situation definitely disrupted the establishment/growth of an active vaporents community on Lemmy. I’m sure there are plenty of ents on Lemmy and I think communities about trees are nice for bringing people together, as opposed to some other communities on Lemmy (mostly political stuff) that can push us apart at times.

P.S. You have a slight typo; it’s vaporizing, not vaporizering 😁

I love my Tinymight 2. Great all-rounder vape, highly recommend.

Dude, my birthday was yesterday. I guess early May is just a chill time of year

Wow, that’s a powerful piece of writing. Good content.

Yeah it’s pretty creepy but also surprisingly wholesome

You’re the one making a lot of assumptions based on what was originally a shower thought. It’s a nice thought but it’s completely and utterly incorrect in reality.

My kids are real life examples demonstrating that huge investment, while good for the individuals, does not reduce the cost or burden of them to society later in their life.

This isn’t an assumption, it’s a data point that contradicts your hypothetical theory.

The fundamental flaw in your thinking is your assumption that treating mental illness and disabilities will result in the person becoming a productive member of society. This is occasionally true, but much more commonly, the treatment serves to alleviate the more severe symptoms of the condition, without actually curing or fixing the condition.

Healthcare is primarily about minimizing the damage and suffering caused by various physical and mental ailments. It can’t magically transform people into something they’re not.

That’s good to hear, I agree that Lemmy is wholesome. Ngl I braced myself for the worst when I read the post title though 😅

imaqtpie,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

Good old Tenzing Norgay 😅. Certainly ranks among the coolest of guides.

imaqtpie,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

From what I can tell, !coolguides has a fairly rigid set of rules, with a specific distinction made between guides and infographics. That’s great, I like when moderators take an active role in curating the content of their communities.

But I would guess that !coolguides is possibly a response to those rules. Basically if your post got removed from the lemmy.ca community because it was technically an infographic, you could post it to sopuli.xyz community instead.

That’s my understanding of the ecosystem, without having spoken to any of the people involved.

Trout to have knee surgery, expected to return in '24 (www.mlb.com)

Trout, a three-time AL MVP and 11-time All-Star, suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee in Monday’s 6-5 win over the Phillies and will undergo surgery in the coming days, general manager Perry Minasian announced. It’s not expected to be a season-ending operation, but no immediate timetable was provided from the Angels or...

@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

Damn, that sucks. He was off to a pretty nice start too.

It’s amazing to think about the numbers he’s going to end up with at the end of his career, and yet people will still be imagining what could have been if not for the injuries and the fact that the Angels wasted his entire career.

…m.wikipedia.org/…/Pronunciation_of_English_⟨th⟩

See the section under dialectal realizations: th-alveolarization. That’s the specific pronunciation difficulty that German speakers frequently have with the English ‘th’ sound. Even native English speakers often have difficulty with the ‘th’ sound in various contexts.

Yeah I feel you, at least the Orioles team is super stacked rn though (speaking as a Yankees fan 🫠). !yankees is equally dead.

My current thought process is that if we can get a decently active generalized baseball community going, it could provide a stepping stone to increasing the activity in the team-specific communities. I’m trying to be active on !mlb and !baseball as much as possible.

There is already a latent population of sports fans on Lemmy, but it’s sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy that the communities aren’t active so people assume there must be no other fans.

My other thought on this topic is that although I do miss the active fan discussion and game threads, the subreddits for essentially all of my teams were indisputably toxic cesspools. The whining, armchair GMing, scapegoating, and just completely idiotic takes were out of this world. So it’d be nice to have activity, but too much activity can also degrade the quality of discussion to the level of Twitter and just create a very toxic environment where fans are constantly arguing and complaining.

Besides lemmy, what's another good reddit alternative?

Hi! Recently exiled reddit user, here. I’m curious what other alternatives to reddit there are, besides Lemmy, and Raddle, of course. Also, imho, Phuks is a good alternative, there’s no hate-speech (that I’m aware of) and people are pretty respectful. Anyways, let’s hear your suggestions! Thank you!

Indeed, well said.

How is mbin development going in your opinion? I am hearing good things but I still haven’t gotten around to making an account.

imaqtpie,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

Hmm… interesting.

You should ask lemm.ee admins to make you a moderator though. Unmoderated communities are bad praxis.

Lmao gimme some of whatever you’re smoking

Honestly Onana is a really likeable guy, despite the fact he’s been poor for us so far. I like that he plays with passion and takes responsibility when he fucks up. Hopefully he can find some form next season.

imaqtpie,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

Hmm, that’s surprising, but DDG was also statistically average to below average for the past 5 years. De gea had glaring weaknesses in his game that he just never fixed throughout his whole career. Phenomenal shot stopper but his distribution, box control/sweeping, and difficulty with penalties left a lot to be desired imo.

Onana’s errant pass was the reason we went down 1-0 against Sheffield last week. But he also made a couple of really nice long kicks that resulted in open chances on goal; Garnacho missed one of them right before halftime. As well as some excellent saves. Which basically sums up my feelings, he’s made too many big mistakes but he’s also made impressive plays fairly regularly. I’m rooting for him.

imaqtpie,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

On what, 300k/week? I know he was getting at least double the next highest paid keeper. But early DDG was quite something, so people tended to give him a lot of slack I guess. But it was pretty clear for awhile that he was well past it.

Onana has been solid so far today.

Are there any innovative platforms in the Fediverse?

I’ve explored a few platforms within the Fediverse, but most of them seem to be inspired by and mimic existing mainstream social media platforms like Twitter, Reddit, and Facebook. While this familiarity can be comforting, I can’t help but wonder if there are any truly innovative and original platforms out there that offer a...

imaqtpie,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

Indeed, that’s an excellent point. Additionally, the fediverse is already an innovation in and of itself.

Yeah most fediverse projects mimic Twitter, reddit, etc. But they all add the key innovation of federation. Just by conforming to ActivityPub, each fediverse project features a key innovation in its respective niche.

I think part of the reason this doesn’t seem as impactful as it could is because federation is still very rudimentary. We are only scratching the surface of the potential that federation theoretically provides. It’s a feature/innovation that becomes more useful the larger the network grows, and the fediverse isn’t large enough yet for that to become apparent.
