@r000t That's an H1-B job.

Ask for 6 years of experience in something barely 18 months old.

"Oh gee, I don't know why we can't find anyone locally for the job. Golly, America just isn't producing the graduates we need. Going to have to go to India."

istvan,
@istvan@noauthority.social avatar

@r000t So is it my alternate explanation that women in HR are writing requirements managers never asked for in order to filter resumes into the trash, that way the only people who make it to job interviews are incompetent liars?

istvan,
@istvan@noauthority.social avatar

@KnifeEar @r000t r000t offered an excellent counterpoint to this theory.

istvan,
@istvan@noauthority.social avatar

@r000t @KnifeEar I am kind of surprised North America isn't at the point of parallel economy with how impossible they have made employment.

Every time you click a link and it goes to fuckyou.taleo.tld and ask you to upload your resume, and then say thank you and give you 15 pages to copy and paste that same fucking resume into 100 fields, you should just say no.

We'd be in a much better place if everyone told these businesses to fuck themselves and just patronized each other.

@sun @lain If anyone has a connection to NileRed, if you can get him to grow crystals out of his piss I am willing to facet them into gemstones.

Whewellite is gem calcium oxalate, aka kidney stones. I'm sure there's a way to get that out of urine.

It has a wide RI range of 1.489 - 1.651, so we would need to polish a flat and test the specimen, but depending on reading it may be compatible with gem designs from opal to topaz.

Would prefer at least a 5 gram crystal.

"evs aren't here to save the planet they are here to save the car industry" look I actually want a car they are super convenient. I exist as a corporeal entity that can experience pleasure or pain and I don't have to justify my existence to anyone so I am entitled to "wasteful" things

istvan,
@istvan@noauthority.social avatar

@sun EVs work like all green tech.

They let you feel virtuous about your low water bill because you secretly sneak out each night to take a massive shit in your neighbor’s yard.

I was serious about the China thing, but it seems like everybody that comes from there says about the same thing, it seems like culture just got flattened

istvan,
@istvan@noauthority.social avatar

@sun @lain I lived in China 15 years.

Culture was essentially murdered during cultural revolution, and the majority of people born in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s barely had any idea about traditional culture.

The 2000s generation has gotten into rediscovering what was killed, and many things have come back in a big way.

Kind of funny to think about, but "China Wave" in music and fashion is actually a big thing in China right now.

istvan,
@istvan@noauthority.social avatar

@sun @lain Hard to point to anything "really influential" that isn't mass directed from CCTV, which is losing popularity.

Things are more regional and fragmented now.

I'd say get on Xiaohongshu and doomscroll for a while.

istvan,
@istvan@noauthority.social avatar

@sun @lain It's really fragmented.

There isn't much going on in regards to Chinese webspace at the moment aside from a few porn BBSes clinging to life. Otherwise just news, and that's all propaganda. Weibo is corporate spam and a channel people maintain for their work only if they have to.

Life has really sectioned off into niche interests. Most of what's going on is in small WeChat groups, and video content on Xiaohongshu.

istvan,
@istvan@noauthority.social avatar

@lain @sun Hell of a lot easier to learn than Japanese.

istvan,
@istvan@noauthority.social avatar

@sun @lain You're looking for something hard to find.

You either need a Chinese person who cares so much about random shit in China that they will go through the huge effort of making it accessible to foreigners, or a foreigner who cares so much about what's going on in China he will make it accessible to foreigners.

That's not much of a thing outside the crazy wuxia fiction fan translation community.

istvan,
@istvan@noauthority.social avatar

@lain @sun I did.

istvan,
@istvan@noauthority.social avatar

@sun @lain Always been the case. Few people have the passion to bridge the gap, and so few people give a fuck about that work that they usually don't keep it up for long.

More often you just see retards like SertpentZA giving their smooth-brained political takes. That seems to be the only China content foreigners care about.

istvan,
@istvan@noauthority.social avatar

@sun @lain Is there anything in particular you are looking for? If it happens to be something I have some interest in maybe I can make a recommendation.

istvan,
@istvan@noauthority.social avatar

@sun @lain If you are into idol pop, someone has taken the time to subtitle a lot of the songs by SING女团. They are very much in that "China Wave" category.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49d95ni5J9Y

istvan,
@istvan@noauthority.social avatar

@sun @lain You might also poke around YouTube more.

There are tons of Chinese dramas with English subtitles on there.

If you are looking for stuff without a modern setting, can look for historical dramas, immortal fantasy (仙俠), or swordsman fantasy (武俠).

Main difference between the two is 仙俠 is usually gods and demons and magic, and 武俠 is fictional martial arts. Some stories cross between the genre.

istvan,
@istvan@noauthority.social avatar

@hakui @lain @sun May be tldr depending on how deep moon is going.

I think hes just curious and not up for full Chinese fiction autism yet。

Probably my biggest pet peeve is people that think that an entire mental condition is just "neurodivergence" because they have a version of it that is manageable, and ignore all the people that have a severe version of it that cripples them.

It really bugs me how often ntpd produces slightly out of sync clocks by trying to be overly clever with skew and with trying to not break software that relies on a monotonically increasing clock. If something breaks when the clock fails to increase monotonically, it's shit, I don't care if it crashes. I'd rather it crash so that I know to uninstall it.

So, I tried to do it "right" this time, but I am going with the strategy that works: run ntpdate pool.ntp.org after the net comes up and then periodically run it again from a cronjob. ntpd(1) has some warnings about how if you do it that way, you don't get the cool skew detection, and it should be the opposite

In other news, cargo is a total piece of shit and this should come as no surprise to me because Rust is a language made by children that have no idea what they're doing but every time I have to interact with software written in Rust, the compiler and the tooling find new ways to disappoint me. I should just get a bunch of RISC-V gear so Rust shit won't run and I don't run into problems like this.

@p I think POWER is similarly immune to rust. Also go.

istvan,
