janbeta,
@janbeta@chaos.social avatar

@MissInformation Hab gerade nochmal nachgeschaut. Bei meiner Buddel Benzin steht tatsächlich beides drauf, ist also wirklich das gleiche Zeug. 😊

New video! I'm restoring a 1970s Commodore calculator. Spoiler: I used a Dremel tool to spice it up a bit at one point...

Haha, now the smoke alarm went off wildly in the kid‘s room (for no obvious reason, probably the battery died). Scared me for a bit. The kid is not here at the moment thankfully. Seems my karma is not very well aligned recently considering all that’s happened over the last couple of weeks… 🫣

Funnily enough, I never managed to set off the smoke alarm in the lab despite all the solder fumes in the air.

I spent quite a few hours trying to figure out the missing 12V situation with the Mac yesterday. At least I narrowed it down to an actual power supply problem, disconnected everything else that uses 12V (at least as far as I understand). I tried to find faulty components in the psu but to no avail so far. Shelved the project for now. Probably the reasonable solution (especially since there are no schematics and I suck at understanding smps circuitry) is to replace it altogether.

janbeta,
@janbeta@chaos.social avatar

@iiidiy Thanks so much! :) I think I'm going to opt for fitting a modern power supply into the Performa. Probably the best solution for longevity. I'm still going to do some more troubleshooting on the original supply though, but I don't have very high hopes to figure it out. We'll see. :)

I decided to work on something a bit lighter (literally) and fun today and refurbished a 1975 scientific calculator made by . It still works (except for the rechargeable battery which thankfully was removed by the previous owner before it could do any harm)!

janbeta,
@janbeta@chaos.social avatar

Currently running it from my bench power supply because the original power supply is an unregulated very crudely made thing from, well, 1975. I don’t trust it. I wonder if I can just run it from a USB adapter? Original PSU is labeled as 6V 200mA unregulated (outputs around 9V without a load) so chances are it’s going to run fine on a 5V supply. Did anybody try? 🤔

janbeta,
@janbeta@chaos.social avatar

Just realized this calculator is technically on a similar level as the Voyager 1. Which also still works (at least to some extent). Old tech rules! 😅

janbeta,
@janbeta@chaos.social avatar

@ipaschke Yeah, it doesn’t work with 5V from my bench supply, I just tested that. It does seem to do fine with external 6V and no battery though so I guess the additional circuitry just brings down the voltage enough to not work with anything below that.

janbeta,
@janbeta@chaos.social avatar

@mnemonicoverload Mine doesn’t seem to work with 5V (just tried with the bench supply). It powers up but instantly crashes. I guess the charging circuitry brings the voltage down enough to not give it enough juice for the ICs.

janbeta,
@janbeta@chaos.social avatar

@root42 It's definitely an LED bubble module that was not made by Commodore. Even the PCB looks completely different. Not sure if HP used the same modules but I guess it's very likely.

My trusty (well, until recently) 20 year old car suffered from a rapid unscheduled disassembly on the rear axle a couple of days ago. Thankfully, it broke down while it was parked. It’s gone to the trash compactor by now and I’m going to try to live without owning a car. Better for the climate (and my wallet) anyway. Cycling, public transport and car sharing it is from now on. Farewell, old rustbucket! We had some good times! 🫡

janbeta,
@janbeta@chaos.social avatar

As an aside, the whole car breakdown episode is also one of the reasons why I didn’t publish a video in a while. Took some organizing and paperwork to get it towed to the recycler etc. (The other reason is that the kid had some days off school and I had to play quite a bit of Minecraft and make many sandwiches). Sorry for the delay, I’m back in the lab now. Hope to have something finished by tomorrow. 🤞

janbeta,
@janbeta@chaos.social avatar

@sheddyian I‘m going to look into that! So far, I’m doing quite well with the regular bike (I already have some good bags, I do most of my everyday shopping by bike anyway, at least when the weather is not too nasty). :)

janbeta,
@janbeta@chaos.social avatar

@dukeitch It was fun! Didn’t have any time for electronics tinkering though.

janbeta,
@janbeta@chaos.social avatar

@supernov Seems to be a relatively common Problem with these Renaults. The rear axle is a "special" (not very well engineered) construction it seems, and there are parts (some kind of Querstreben) that tend to rust and break after some time (I’m obviously not an expert). The guy who towed the car had seen it before. Unfortunately expensive to fix (and the car had many other little things gradually breaking down anyway).

janbeta,
@janbeta@chaos.social avatar

@root42 Nice! I think it should be very doable. :) I have to change my habits quite a bit but I’m actually looking forward to it. And my climate karma is going to be a lot cleaner as well.
