Hmm, do I bring the iPad with me to WWDC? Not sure I'll have time to use it, but would be pretty curious if iPadOS 18 has some cool stuff in it

jasoncox,
@jasoncox@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig Cool? iPadOS? Sir, this is Apple.

I am dying to know what the Vision Pro does while it's off because that thing chews through standby battery life like nothing else

@christianselig It’s mining Bitcoin, duh.

@paul Is that just for freight trains blowing their whistles? Or is this some weird thing in College Station like how some northern towns set off their air raid sirens to signal shift change in car plants?

Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard in October. Since then:

Number of Xbox Studios games on rival platforms: 4

Number of Activision Blizzard games on Xbox Game Pass: 1

WTF.

jasoncox,
@jasoncox@mastodon.social avatar

@thurrott My money is on anti-trust. Not that I think MS is doing anything wrong, I just think they’re concerned about the EC.

Playing around with a Meta Quest 3 version of my Vision Pro stand, and I want a flourish on top to differentiate them, but I can't decide if I prefer the inset or raised sensors. What do you think?

Meta Quest 3 rendered in stainless steel in Fusion 360 with the three sensors inset from the "pringle" top

jasoncox,
@jasoncox@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig Raised. Inset seems like it’d end up collecting dust or skin debris.

Incredibly often, it seems that Safari fails to load a website. It happens both on my Mac and iPhone and has been happening for a long time. I think this has to do with my WiFi, but I fail to see anything unusual in my Ubiquiti setup.

Anyone seeing similar issues with Safari, or is this some issue in my Internet setup?

(Yes, I've tried disabling all extensions)

jasoncox,
@jasoncox@mastodon.social avatar

@simonbs It happens a few times a month to me. Normally I have to restart Safari or, at the worst, reboot.

Random question, but does anyone get that bug in Safari on Mac where when navigating the YouTube website, sometimes you'll navigate back a page and the page won't actually change at all despite the URL updating?

jasoncox,
@jasoncox@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig Yup. That’s Google rewriting the URL, IIRC. One of the great legacies of Web 2.0 that just won’t die.

@thurrott So stupid question from an annoyed developer to a journalist whose been covering the EC’s shenanigans for ages… The DMA is requiring Apple to publish my contact info to my App Store product page. Is that even GDPR compliant? Because it sure seems like a privacy violation to me.

How much storage are people using on their Mac? 💻

I’ve outgrown 256 & 512 GB & feel I need at least 1 TB with my current usage. I don’t carry external SSD’s and prefer to keep all my files/photos on my device.

jasoncox,
@jasoncox@mastodon.social avatar

@BasicAppleGuy I have a 4 TB drive here, but that’s less because I use that much storage and more because I didn’t feel like waiting 1-2 months for a BTO model when the local Apple Store had the high end model in stock for same day pickup.

I really want to make Juno for tvOS one day, but for whatever reason tvOS 17 still does not have any support for web views, which are required to make an app like Juno :(

jasoncox,

Apple Vision Pro launched one month ago.
How has your view of product changed since launch?

jasoncox,

@BasicAppleGuy Still hugely overpriced for a single user headset with a tiny app market.

christianselig, to random

Okay, up until last week I could say "Siri, kitchen light” and the light would toggle to the opposite of its current state, super handy. Now Siri just says “On or off?” Did I break something? Did Siri break? I've tried restarting the Apple TV hub and HomePod mini multiple times

jasoncox,
@jasoncox@mastodon.social avatar

@christianselig Seriously man, don’t try to understand the schizophrenic nature of Siri and HomeKit. Commands just randomly stop working for months and suddenly start working again. Or they start activating things in the wrong zone. Or worse, Apple starts prempting your existing commands and directing them to iOS features.

I like the idea of FPGA emulation but that screen looks so tiny…
