Blog Post: I'm bored with all the AI stuff so it's time for fan fiction. I try to make the case for an Apple Camera (and Apple Camera Pro).

Blog post: YouTube Stops Screen Stealing On Apple TV

It's been more than 24 hours so no take-backs. Thanks to @glennf, again, for noticing the change.

@matt I'm always right, Matt.

Don't fact check that just accept it.

I’d like to see this iPhone in the lineup:

iPhone G-Shock*

  • iPhone mini screen (5.4” screen)
  • iPhone mini height/width (5.18” x 2.53”)
  • fucking thick as hell, maybe 1/2” thick

key features:

  • reinforced edges for ruggedness
  • gigantic battery
  • for people who use their phones for work but need it to be rugged as hell and last all day no matter what
  • no need for fancy features like periscope camera

*who cares what they call it (but you knew exactly what I meant when I said G-Shock)

@jsnell @tvaziri I’ve been thinking that maybe they should make a non-iPhone camera out of iPhone parts. They have the app to remotely control the cameras. Vloggers are loving DJI Osmos. Small display, Touch ID, camera array, and big battery. Too niche of a product but more practical than gathering four iPhones with cellular contracts.

What a curiously dispassionate post on The Verge about their parent company signing a deal with OpenAI. It’s interesting that they posted about it in a way that lumps it together with the other deals and there’s no statement from The Verge’s famously opinionated leadership about what this deal means for publishing, journalism, and the open web.

@cory I’m sure there will be a fiery, no-holds-barred episode of Decoder about it.

joesteel,
@joesteel@duck.haus avatar

@cory (there definitely won’t be)

joesteel,
@joesteel@duck.haus avatar

@cory Judging from Nilay’s Threads posts there’s already a hard pivot into rationalizing this.

@Gte
Pros:

  • Short term financial gain

Cons:

  • Generative AI in the commerce product results in undifferentiated ad sales product
  • Attribution no one will click through on
  • No headphone jack

Score: 8/10

(Whispers) these keys are not very good. Especially the despill. But I guess it’s for “creators” that would otherwise use those significantly worse difference matte keys and stuff. So I suppose I should grade it on a curve. Show us flyaway hairs, not full-body Channel 8 meteorologist. https://mastodon.online/@9to5Mac/112525770258586436

Apple really goofed on next gen CarPlay. Two years of teasing something no one is shipping, and announced partners like Mercedes are bailing out of. They’ve been completely lapped by Google’s Android Automotive where Google is going to own the whole stack in most of the new cars - even the ones that do support old CarPlay.

I heard this from @glennf and just tested on an Apple TV with tvOS 17.4 and a 10 minute screensaver interval and no YouTube screensaver kicked in before Aerial at the 10 min mark. The YouTube app version is 4.22.01 so it doesn’t appear to have recently updated. Something server side, maybe? Can anyone else report back if they’re still seeing the YouTube screeensaver (reference: https://joe-steel.com/2024-04-12-YouTubes-Screen-Stealer.html)

@yatil @tvaziri you misspelled “depressed”

glennf, to random

@joesteel did tvOS 17.5.1 disable the YouTube screen saver? I just installed the upgrade, had YouTube selected…oh but I wasn’t paused in a video.

joesteel,
@joesteel@duck.haus avatar

@glennf It would have still kicked in if you were in the interface with a slideshow of stills from generic landscape, travel, and nature videos. I tested it out while paused during a video (which would have been the thumbnail zooming in over and over) but nothing came up. Nothing even appears to be updated this Apple TV is on 17.4 and the YouTube app is 4.22.01

If you thought the whole concept of a “salad bar” had been killed by the pandemic, well then, you’ve never been to Lubbock.

This weekend sucked so bad on so many fronts that I'm almost glad the work week starts tomorrow. Almost.

One of the sucky things was breaking a toe so work tomorrow will be uncomfortable at best.

On the bright side, I ordered some tiaras. 👑👑👑👑
