It just struck me what Apple got wrong with its “crushing ad.”

They thought we would identify with the iPad, not the creative instruments and materials.

glennf,
@glennf@twit.social avatar

@xenolon Different facets of the same problem. I'm talking conceptual; you're talking practical. But same issue. If they had put themselves in the place of a creative person…

@letterror @celiason Too easy to identify with the craftspeople who made the piano rather than the piano as a material commercial object that can be acted upon.

glennf,
@glennf@twit.social avatar

@letterror The piano surplus is pretty huge in America. Like to the extend that they are being trashed, even good ones. If we wanted a good-quality upright, we could easily get one free within a week in Seattle for the trouble of moving it.

@letterror @notroot Yes, we are a land of waste and plenty.

I have such highly developed ad blindness that the Crush ad didn't even register with me. It took me awhile to understand what the complaints were about.

I wonder if it would have gone over better if instead of showing things being destroyed, they showed the objects fusing together. Kind of like how we think of a diamond being created.

glennf,
@glennf@twit.social avatar

@jackbrewster Great minds! My immediate reaction was: "why crush? why not fuse?!”

Looking for a 2021 or 2022 12.9” iPad Pro with Mini-LED (i.e., M1 or M2) with at least 256 GB of RAM, Wi-Fi is all that's needed (cell is ok, but not at a big premium as it won't be activated).

Anyone have such an item they are interested in selling?

    Apple’s been telling us that music and other artistic endeavors are “in our DNA” for quite a while. It’s been trite almost that entire time.

    @drdrang I think art is innate: see what kids do with no direction and a little mud!

    Legitimately surprised it was the "Crush" ad and not the AI-powered replacements for musicians as the thing that fed the discourse.

    What a ridiculous over-reading of the situation. And they think they are politically savvy. Next they will say Trump is presidential (again).

    Mike Johnson Becomes the Speaker of the Whole House. For Now. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/09/us/politics/mike-johnson-speaker-vote.html?smid=nytcore-android-share

    glennf,
    @glennf@twit.social avatar

    @jeffjarvis I guess I’d disagree. He could have shut the whole thing down like predecessors; could have engaged in pointless efforts in the past. Instead, he worked to largely pass bills that had already achieved bipartisan Senate support. I'm not giving him credit for doing his job, but for rather rising the occasion the nation needed of him not being an obstructionist—a bar for previous Speakers. He has no good ideas of his own, and if he had a true majority, he'd be passing terrible stuff.

    glennf,
    @glennf@twit.social avatar

    @jeffjarvis If he's that clever, I don't see it. He has no chance of re-election if the Republican keep the House and by partnering with the Dems, has surely caused problems with some House races.

    I am down to fewer than 40 copies (as of May 11) of Six Centuries of Type & Printing, a letterpress-printed book in an edition of 425. The book traces printing with type before Gutenberg through the present day across all technological developments. Typeset in hot metal in North Yorkshire, printed in London, bound in Germany, the hardcover book is covered in green cloth and comes in a slipcase of the same fabric. https://glog.glennf.com/tiny-type-museum-time-capsule-and-more/six-centuries-letterpress Some copies remain with Tiny Type Museum slipcase stamping.

    @Sylvhem @shandyist When sold out, I do have some copies with minor irregularities that I felt wrong selling at full price that I will offer at a significant discount. Watch this space! In some cases, one image wasn't printed? In another, the front endpapers are blank (but "debossed,"), etc. Nothing that spoils the book.

    glennf,
    @glennf@twit.social avatar

    @Sylvhem Thank you so much! It was a wild ride, as I wrote it in late 2019 and then it was printed and bound into the face of the pandemic. I had the most amazing time designing the endpapers, which I drew by hand, adapted in Illustrator, send to the printer, who then made a photopolymer plate for letterpress printing them. The interior is hot-metal type; just the endpapers are digital-to-analog.

    glennf,
    @glennf@twit.social avatar

    @Sylvhem It was a bit of a stretch to make it happen. It's possible to get hot-metal typesetting from a number of people (in the U.S.; fewer elsewhere). But none of them will print a book from it. There are letterpress book printers I could contract who typically work with photopolymer—but I'd done a book like that. Phil at Hand & Eye works with a former employer who bought his Monotype hot-metal gear! So they are maybe unique.
