Welcome to the Day 11 thread

I’m in Czechia currently and I’m heading back into Germany today

https://urbanists.video/w/9j2cJauwN2qzPP97EC6uuq

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@trantion it’s had a few rebuilds!

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@filiplachert I think it’s somehow to do with the Plzeňský Kraj ticket system. But it’s still a bit weird.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@filiplachert you might save anyway with a split. But the Horažďovice predm. - Plzen - Domažlice ticket is extra cheap because it’s all the same Kraj.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Hmm.

Horažďovice predm. - Plsen - Furth im Wald is 377 CZK (€15,97)

If I stop in Domažlice as well, and split tickets there… it’s 145 CZK (€6,14). So that’s what I’ll do

CD screenshot - to Domazlice
Domazlice - Furth

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Oh and the cross border section Domažlice - Furth im Wald

63 CZK (€2,67) from ČD

Or €6,95 from DB

🤷‍♂️

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@thatmanmatt I think the engineering of these was always better than Pacers. But unlike the UK, here they found a way to make them disabled accessible too

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

These Czech railbuses… also known as RegioMouse

Built in 1977 but rebuild to have step free access. And here in Plzeňský Kraj in impeccable condition

Horažďovice predm.

Builder plate RegioMouse

Railways in 🇨🇿 are far from perfect

But what’s so good is what ought to be easy for railways they do well - timetables, information in stations, online ticketing, live running data. Staff are also very good in my experience.

So many other railways fail on those points.

It’s the hard stuff - infrastructure investment - that’s lacking. But that’s long term, slow, costly.

Basically Czechia and ČD make the very best of what they have.

@sixtus@mastodon.social avatar

🤷🏼‍♀️ Falsche WG?

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Welcome to Day 10. Off to Austria and Czechia today!

https://urbanists.video/w/bssxjGvWUcXKopeDCQN5R9

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@canleaf I’m likely on a RegioPanther shortly!

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@nordkommission @partim I got it to work on Arriva, quoting some paragraph of the terms of travel that Adam Vanting sent me. That might work here too… Also GW Train here is one person operation - no ticket checks. You could play dumb and risk it.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Here’s today’s video summary

https://urbanists.video/w/2LhaAFGFuZPZZd5pQDNzj5

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

So tomorrow I will re-route - from Horažďovice to Plsen, then direct to Schwandorf. But it means avoiding a rail replacement bus, and getting more sleep...

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Train 41

R 660
20:25 Číčenice - Horažďovice predm. 21:07
ČD

Distance: 48 km
Average speed: 68 km/h

Train type: Škoda locomotive and 6 carriages
⚡️
🚲: ✅
🦽: ❓ (dedicated carriage, but useable at all stations? I don’t know)
🛜: ⛔️ (not in my carriage)
🧳: 🤔 (high narrow steps - hard with luggage)
🧽: 🤔 (bit grimy)

: ⛔️

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Damn. There’s a rail replacement bus between Horažďovice and Klatovy tomorrow 😡

I’m going to have to route via Plzen after all

Frustrating…

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@nordkommission @partim I’ll check when I’m not on a train!

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@chrismacnab @KarlE I think you have to allow all sorts. Those who want fast, and those who want to see things. People going from city to city by bike is fine by me!

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Never have I been happier to see an old Škoda locomotive 🙂

ČD held the connecting train in Číčenice, so I’ll make it to Horažďovice predm. tonight

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@senta_wolfsberg I’ve replied to this point about 5 times already. This is supposed to be a long distance cycle path. Not something for a challenging outing in the countryside. If you want mud, label it as such

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

And if your response to this is “I like mud / gravel”, sure, that’s fine. But this is meant to be a long distance cycle path - style of the Vennbahn, and listed as such. And it’s not good enough for that. I have a folding bike, so I’ll prioritise decent surfaces which is my prerogative. If you want mud, fine. But list mud as mud.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@chrismacnab @KarlE I think basically I was annoyed yesterday because this wasn’t the quality promised - these long distance cycle paths in Germany (like Vennbahn at Aachen) are designed to get cyclists quite easily across long distances. This was labelled as such, but wasn’t useable that way. I managed barely 13km/h average, whereas I’d normally manage 20km/h at least.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@chrismacnab @KarlE You have basically no other way of crossing this region on a bike tour other than this route. The roads have no cycle lanes. If you don’t want this asphalted then at least it has to be maintained.

richardavsmith, to random

@jon - hey, do you remember seeing any decent cross border bus or taxi options during or while planning Turmantas to Daugavpils for

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@richardavsmith @partim although Stettin is a really nice city

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@richardavsmith @partim Don’t. Rail replacement on a part German side. And in Kostryzn the bridge is broken. Guben is your best bet if you want something different.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@partim @richardavsmith isn’t there still a rail replacement currently even for the ECs? Or Richard - go via Guben?
