If you mean Cloudflare Images, then no. I thought about using it, but since Mbin stores the sha hash of the images, I didn't want Cloudflare to serve an optimized image and then Mbin (or an Mbin app) check the hash and see it didn't match. Additionally, I believe Mbin does some sort of optimization anyway (there's a "cache" directory that's likely the optimized and resized versions of the original images). Unfortunately, this "cache" isn't used with the Mbin API (and, therefore, any external client). IMO, the best place to optimize the image is when it's first federated or uploaded anyway.

From what I know, cloudflare images also costs more than just serving the existing image through R2.

There's a calculator here if you'd like to try a certain setup (amount of storage & operations).

Thanks for the kind words :)

When you mention padding, do you mean between posts, inside the post cards, between comments, between other ui elements, all of the above? And I'm assuming the new "Compact Preview" setting was at least a step in the right direction for you?

An update regarding the future of m/AskKbin (where we are headed towards) - AskKbin - kbin.social (kbin.social)

Hello everyone, check out my announcement post linked above and if you don’t know who I am, check out my past post to learn more about me and It would mean a lot of you show your support for my future iniatives inside the fediverse!...

jwr1,
@jwr1@kbin.earth avatar

I think the spacing for the cards might need to be adjusted anyway, but yeah, some sort of dense layout mode would be good to add.

For Mbin (and I believe pretty much any federated platform), there has to be at least one person following you on an external server in order for your posts and threads to show up there. For instance, your post from two hours ago is showing up on mstdn.games because GamingWolf from mstdn.games followed you three hours ago. From a quick look at your followers list, it doesn't look like any of them are from mastodon.social or mstdn.social, so that's why your posts aren't showing on those two servers.

jwr1,
@jwr1@kbin.earth avatar

Also, if you already have an account on a Mastodon instance, you could follow yourself from there, instead of waiting for another user from that server to follow you.

Ok, I was able to figure out what was wrong. All registration and password reset emails should be working now.

jwr1,
@jwr1@kbin.earth avatar

Sorry about that, and thanks for letting me know. I had no idea the email system was down. I'll probably try to look into it after the migration to Mbin. I've gone ahead and manually verified each user from the past week, so you should be able to sign in now.

jwr1,
@jwr1@kbin.earth avatar

The migration to Mbin is complete! Let me know if you run into any issues.

@jwr1@kbin.earth avatar

Mbin does support microblogs. I believe there's a "Microblog" button in the navigation bar for desktop, and the same button found in the side drawer on mobile.

jwr1,
@jwr1@kbin.earth avatar

No, we haven't migrated yet. I just decided to fix that first.

jwr1,
@jwr1@kbin.earth avatar

Just curious, what was the reason for blocking those first three instances?

jwr1,
@jwr1@kbin.earth avatar

Maybe @jerry knows what's going on? Is it possible oauth client creation is restricted to admins on fedia?

jwr1,
@jwr1@kbin.earth avatar

That's great! I'll add it to the recommended instances section once I get a change.

jwr1,
@jwr1@kbin.earth avatar

Maybe because Google doesn't think it's popular enough, I've noticed that too though. The search does work if you search the app id directly though, like one.jwr.interstellar.

If you're trying to login to your fedia account, I've noticed that server doesn't seem to work (which is why it's not in the recommended instances section). It's probably an issue with how they setup the api (you'll notice other mbin instances work with interstellar just fine).

jwr1,
@jwr1@kbin.earth avatar

Thanks for the feedback! I've thought about adding a subscription list, so I'll add that to the planned features. I'll also take a look at the mastodon app; someone else also said the layout took a lot of space, so I've already been looking into that.

jwr1,
@jwr1@kbin.earth avatar

Thanks, I actually did mention that at the bottom of the post, but I probably should have made it more obvious.

kbin.earth server upgrade planned (kbin.earth)

Due to the increased usage and number of posts on kbin.earth, we have recently been reaching the system resource limit, and the server has frozen a few times in the past week. Sometime today (or hopefully by at least the end of tomorrow), I'll be moving kbin.earth to a new server with more ram. The expected downtime should be...

The server upgrade is complete, with only 20 minutes of downtime! Hopefully, now we won't experience resource issues any time soon.

AUA: We are the Plasma dev team. Ask Us Anything about Plasma 6, gear 24.02, Frameworks 6 and everything else in the upcoming Megarelease.

David, Nate, Josh, Marco, Carl, and Niccolò are here ready to answer all your questions on Plasma (all versions), Gear, Frameworks, Wayland (and how it affects KDE’s software), and everything in between....

jwr1,
@jwr1@kbin.earth avatar

Thanks for the AUA and all the work on KDE, especially with plasma 6.

It's not really a question, more of a request, but is it possible you all could make the kwrite/kate situation less complicated? I don't mind having options, but from what I understand, you can only have them both installed (or none), not one or the other. Also, if I want Kwrite to be the default editor, I have to go into every supported mime type (file association) and switch the default (instead of just once for all of them).

My preference would be that there's only one text editor (to cause less confusion; maybe just have a toggle button to switch between basic and advanced modes), and to make it easier to change file associations for common file types (like text files, video files, music, images, etc.); even if it's technically a different file format, e.g. .mp4 vs .mkv for videos, I should only have to set the default app once.

jwr1,
@jwr1@kbin.earth avatar

You can have only one installed, and Fedora KDE ships this way. If your distro doesn’t offer that, it seems like a distro packaging issue.

Thanks for the info; it does look like that's how my distro packages it.

make it easier to change file associations for common file types
That’s in Plasma 6. :)

That's awesome to hear! It's a problem I've had for a while, so I'm glad it's being worked on.

Anyway, I just want to say I really appreciate all the work y'all have done over the years; I've been using plasma for the past 6-7 years, and it's a desktop environment like no other.

Kbin already let's you apoint users as instance level moderators (without admin permissions). So, Ernest probably just needs someone that can help with the moderation, because I can't tell he actually looks at the reports, considered I've reported several spam posts before (from kbin.social) and nothing was removed.
