👨🏻‍💻 Front end developer working primarily in React. Currently at Red Hat working on Ansible Controller. Author of CSS in Depth.

🌎 I live in the great Pacific Northwest. I care about people and believe in the open web.

✨ I’m married to a literary nerd and have two fantastic children and two ridiculous cats. I enjoy fine cocktails and cooking. And running, when I’m in the habit. #JavaScript#CSS#ReactJS#WebDev#UX#IndieWeb#guitar#PNW • searchable

Tip (please for the love): If you have a UI element on page that can be clicked for one action and dragged for a different action, make sure dragging it only one or two pixels fires the click action

After 6000 years of written language, we’ve honed the craft so most languages can communicate effectively with only a few dozen characters.

After 60 years of digitally recorded language, we’ve thrown all discipline to the wind and added hundreds of thousands of unnecessary characters, including poop, dolphin, and an eggplant that means phallus.

Hey #indieweb friends... I've decided to let my registration of https://omnibear.com lapse (it's good til February).

If anybody is interested in taking over that project, I'm up for a domain transfer. @aciccarello has indicated some interest, so teaming up with him might be a possibility

Didn’t realize going into it just how much assembling a garden drip irrigation system involves holding two pieces of plastic tightly and pressing them into one another as hard as I can. Gonna have several blisters after this I think

If you’ve got 99 bottles of beer on the wall, why are you passing one around? Clearly you have enough for everyone to have their own bottle.

Really considering starting to post recipes on a blog, not because I want to be a “food blogger” (ugh) but purely because the web deserves some un-bloated, ad-free, tracking-free recipes somewhere

The QA often tells me when my code “works as expected” but just once I'd love it if they said it “works, as expected”

Does anyone have a password manager recommendation that's user-friendly for less technical users? We switched to 1Password last year and it has honestly been a nightmare for my wife

I can’t even browse recipes on my phone anymore, they’re so laden with JS bloatware and ads. My phone gets warm to the touch and scrolling becomes unreliable. What a mess

Petition to remove Brazil nuts from cans of mixed nuts and replace them with something that actually tastes good, like pistachios

A TV episode is never made more dramatic or suspenseful by opening with some bad situation followed by “24 hours earlier” and then actually starting the episode.

Just start the episode at the beginning. If that doesn’t do the job, the writers failed to create a compelling story.

I made mint chip ice cream with fresh mint. It’s delicious but it’s kind of a whole different thing. I think next time I’ll still add a couple drops of the artificial stuff

Sometimes the right call is to simply repeat yourself in code and that's okay. Just because you _can_abstract something doesn’t mean you should

Does the new CSS light-dark() do anything to support sites that have a light mode/dark mode toggle switch?

🔗 The Ultimate Ideal Bestest Base Font Size That Everyone Is Keeping a Secret Especially Chet

This is actually a really good idea. Though it’s probably worth setting a large base font size for very large screens.

Wife: what’s wrong with the vocals on this song (PJ Harvey’s To Bring My Love)

Me: It’s called breakup. It’s what happens when you crank the gain just the point where the amp…

Wife: nails on a chalkboard. Can we skip this one?

Me (softly): but that’s what makes it rock so hard.

A total experiment based on no recipe at all and I’m totally looking forward to it

Apple has burned so much trust through this whole mess. I’m beginning to read all this emphasis on "privacy and security" as cover for shady monopolistic business practices.

PWAs have so many security element built into them. That's why I see "install our app!" messages online as an attempt to more thoroughly violate privacy.

There really ought to be an academy award for “most entertaining film” because that’s really all I care about and “best picture” has always been, well, self-aggrandizing nonsense
