@dilmandila I’m only seeing your post now (I’m days behind in my feed but don’t want to miss anything), but: https://mastodon.online/@kevinteljeur/112490055540129742

Heads up to anyone using facebook or insta: you'll receive a notification about your data being used to train AIs. The opt out process is deliberately convoluted and you have to fill out a form to object. This is what I wrote in mine, and the objection was immediately registered as successful, so feel free to copy.

Masto reply bores, this is not a post on which to fart out your opinions about Meta or AI or whatever. So don't. I'm sharing helpful info for people who need it, not for you.

@kevinteljeur@mastodon.online avatar

@stavvers I got the notification, sent the reply, got a response that they’ll honour my request. But the phrasing is deliberately intimidating and suggests that in fact they won’t.

I mentioned personal security and GDPR. I don’t think a human is reading these.

Euclid Paper Day!

This morning's arXiv update brought the expected deluge of preprints from Euclid. You can find details of all fifteen of the new articles here. Ten of them relate to the Early Release Observations of which five were announced yesterday and five last November. These are essentially byproducts of the testing and calibration phase of the Euclid mission rather than the main cosmological survey.

Why are the Far Right so bad at graphic and information design? Like, they've got the funding, presumably from Putin, but it's usually terrible. That's a good thing, but it's just odd how they provide their own handicaps.

DuckDuckGo, the search engine I use as my reliable alternative to Google, is down.

In other news, I've discovered that I know absolutely nothing about anything. I don't even know how socks work, or what air does. I'm lost.

Outrage that a reckless driver's car might gently beep at them.

...as early as 2032:

The technology uses GPS to compare a vehicle's speed with a dataset of posted speed limits. Once the car is at least 10 mph over the speed limit, the system would...

@Meyerweb @jwz My 2019 Toyota Corolla hatchback (Irish/EU model) has a speed limiter, so I can set an upper speed limit. I have to do it manually though. It has cameras that read speed limit signs (not very reliable in Ireland, for reasons), and visual dash alerts for if I go over the limit. It would be nice to have something like the described system all the time.

It would be nice to warn traffic lights and the like too, all of which is easily possible.

Norma Foley (Ireland's Minister for Education) is talking about banning smartphones for primary school pupils. I wasn't keen on my kid getting a smartphone before 13, but... Isn't the Minister straying from her lane a bit here? What's really going on? https://www.irishexaminer.com/news/politics/arid-41400511.html

I'm going to stray out of my lane, @Tupp_ed, and suggest that the history of this crusade seems to me to very Gistable. Well, maybe not just yet. But it will be soon enough.

kevinteljeur,
@kevinteljeur@mastodon.online avatar

My hypothesis is that she wants to have some sort of authoritarian achievement, such as making it illegal for anyone under 16 to have Internet access or something like that. She wants to be the Minister In Strict Control of Children.

It’s great that Ireland, Spain, and Norway have stepped forward (and joined most of the rest of the world) in recognising Palestine. I hope it starts a process in the EU.

I think that the Irish Government has ulterior motives here but that’s a story for another day. A win is a win.

kevinteljeur,
@kevinteljeur@mastodon.online avatar

I would pay good money for a book on the behind-the-scenes of how the Irish Government got here. Must have been some pressure to not take this step, so it’s all the more amazing to me that they went through with it (in a positive way).

There should be sanctions for businesses that do layoffs. Or even before that there should be more worker protection preventing layoffs ofc but also these businesses should experience financial sanctions

you know what, I am finding it really difficult to research how specific processes happen in the body in detail as a non-scientist. Like, I wanted to find out how we transform glucose in the blood into fat molecules (triglycerides). it makes sense to me that we do, but I want to understand how - and also how fat molecules* get made back into glucose when we need them for energy. but it's either super surface level "when you eat too much you gain fat" or it's chemistry papers

@kevinteljeur@mastodon.online avatar

@being I think I mentioned protein poisoning to you before. You have to eat actual fat (but more like, a somewhat balanced diet).

Somebody please explain to me the concept of houses with significantly more bathrooms than bedrooms because I never understood. You always hear "mansion with 9 bedrooms and 16 bathrooms". Why???

kevinteljeur,
@kevinteljeur@mastodon.online avatar

@being I was looking at a house listing earlier where it has three bedrooms and four bathrooms. Three of those are each attached to a bedroom, and the utility bathroom is downstairs in a three story house.

Now that I write it out, I think it’s designed to be rented out like some sort of mini-tenement. It’s a weird house design generally.
